I've learned so much doing these few illustrations!
I feel like I've started to understand the way light and color work in each other, and the way I can break those rules to create interesting or striking effects!
That being said, I'm going to try to apply those rules to a bolder and more cartoony style, to give my drawings just a big more "oomph!"

It was really interesting to play with rim lighting and various lighting conditions in these illustrations. I feel like I learned a lot about considering shading not just as "adding shadows" but, as balancing the midtones with both highlights and dark areas. I'm also very grateful with my clients for allowing me to play with fun and interesting poses for these illustrations!

I really liked the flat colored versions of these YCHs! It made me want to hold back a little on the shading, focusing mostly on ambient, mood lighting, and strong shadows in very few places. I think it's something that I should apply to more illustrations in the future!

Two very different and very fun refsheets this time, and a super cute commission that allowed me to play with proportions a lot!
For the first illustration I tried a couple of different lighting approaches, but I like what I ended up with. It's a bit less "realistic" that what I was thinking originally but I think it makes the character pop out in a cute way!

I'm really happy with the inks on these few commissions! I've tried my best to improve my line weight and expressiveness of my lines, and I feel like I'm finally managing to wrap my head around it. Kinda. Or at least, I have a workflow that allows me to focus on that kind of stuff more efficiently!

I experimented with more intense lighting in this image set, but still tried to keep the feel kind of cartoonish to keep with the visual style of the games. I'm also happy with the look of the more detailed meaty beats being painted on instead of lined!

For these commissions, I've been trying to worry less about composition and really focused on lighting and trying to make the whole picture feel cohesive and interesting to look at. It's fun to experiment with colors until you get the right vibe!
