Richard has put a deposit on a new family car, sight unseen. Also in this episode, Bruce Springsteen's cold hands, KFC translation mishaps, American car advert small print, trying to drive a ridiculously big truck, Ford's fake overhangs, ZF and Zeppelins, a bum-faced airship incident, enjoying spoken German, dressing like you listen to The Levellers, an unwanted waltzer sofa, and what's the deal with wicker furniture? Plus, Jonny needs some help with static caravans and an amazing Technics ja...

Hello lovely Patreons. As ever, here are some links and pics to go with the latest show.
The lead image this week is of a Dodge Ram dually pick-up, as mentioned by Richard. The second pic is of a Lincoln Continental Mark V in all its massive overhang glory. And finally we have a couple of images of Jonny's Waltzer sofa, made out of a genuine 1950s Maxwell Waltzer car from Butlins in Skegness and possibly for sale soon.

Sorry, messed up that one on the first attempt. Let's try this again.
If you've heard the latest podcast you'll be familiar with Jonny's views on Star Wars movies. Last weekend his kids insisted on watching another one. He left me this message while it was playing.

Hello hello. Here are some things related to episode 43 of the podcast. The lead image is, of course, of a Toyota Hilux Surf even though Richard doesn't want one and Jonny isn't going to buy one. The other two images are Richard's crap photos of a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber circling the mountains near Burbank, California and Chaka Khan in an old car. She's under the mass of hair in the back.

Jonny and Richard have a new spin-off idea for Harry Metcalfe. Two, if you count Harry’s UK Garage. Also in this episode, earning money from storing pre-reg cars, getting called a ‘silly’ by a landlord, spotting a drunk ghost working in a West Country nightclub, and that time Richard saw a blimp, a stealth bomber and Chaka Khan on the same day. Plus, top 1930s diplomat Tokyo Cedric, the Toyota Hilux Surf, Greasy Mark’s mk2 Escort van, pouring one out for the GT86, and Technics v Kenwo...

When we record Smith and Sniff we talk for an hour or so, then at the end record the intro including a reference back to something from the previous hour's chat. This is then put at the beginning in the edit. Richard usually does the main bit of the intro because he edits the show and knows how long the intro has to be to fit into the gap before the music fades up a bit. This week, however, Jonny had a turn, but he can never remember how it's supposed to go.

Hello, hello.
To go with this week's podcast, some links and a few images. The lead picture is of a wooden-bodied Hustler 6 (but not the one Jonny's trying to trick Richard into buying). The other images show Postman Pat flaunting his needless hardware, Sir Topham Hatt deciding to have a big lunch in the middle of a crisis, and the man from Gogglebox with his talking train lookalike.

Jonny tries to get Richard to go splits on a weird old car with glass doors.
Also in this episode, Nights In White Satin, Jeff Bezos dropping off his resignation like an Amazon driver, the rank incompetence of Thomas the Tank Engine and Postman Pat, Covid vaccines that sound like crap cars, and why don't women email this show?
Plus, the glacial depreciation of Toyota Land Cruisers, the fear of swimming near massive ships, the never-seen AMG GT four door, and the secret...

Hello, hello. Some extra notes to go with this week's show. The lead image is of the crisp dials in the Peugeot e-Partner. The other four are the photo Richard stopped the car to take of a Rover 75 V8 Tourer, the Fisher Price Yaphet Kotto-alike in Jonny's desk cactus, the Ford Ranger thinking Smith and Sniff is 'jazz' (thanks to listener Ken Long) and a yachting 38a Range Rover spotted by listener Tom Hollick.

Jonny and Richard compare notes on Toyota's new hot hatch homologation hype king. Also in this episode, Tesla Model S and X updates, the minimalism of the Citroen AX, marking the passing of Rémy Julienne and John Ackroyd, and a smattering of listeners' messages. Plus, lemon curd, stunt weeing, Granada Designs, too many Corsas, and was Turkish John from school telling the truth about his dad's G-wagens?

Richard remembers the time TV's James May had a travel tea disaster in his Land Rover. Also in this episode, Jonny's barnfind laptop, memories of Feu Orange air freshener, horrors of rot-era Mercs, a weirdly low mileage Ka, comedy tax dodge cars and the story of the sour-faced old woman and the abandoned Honda Jazz. Hello,
In the new show we vaguely mentioned giving Patreons early access to new episodes of the Smith and Sniff podcast. "Hang on," you say to yourself, "I haven't heard the new show yet." Well, the good news is you can listen to it right now because it's embedded in this post which, assuming we've got all the settings right, is going live on Sunday evening, 12 hours before those non-Patreon suckers get to hear it. We hope you like it.
Cheers,
Jonny and Richard

First Smith and Sniff podcast of 2021 has been recorded and will be available to Patreons at 7pm UK time on Sunday evening, ahead of its release to everyone else on Monday morning. We'll be talking about the Rolls-Royce Ghost that Jonny borrowed over Christmas, a hyper-nerdy book Richard's been reading over the holidays, a remarkable email from a listener about Ford's nineties grot mag database, and many other things.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Hello,
There's no Smith and Sniff podcast this week but we'll be back with a brand new episode on Monday 11 January.
In the meantime, for you fine Patreons only, here's a bit that was cut out of a previous episode in which Richard is synth shamed by Jonny. The business at the beginning is how we start every recording session, simultaneously clapping to give an easy marker for syncing up our separate audio recordings.
Happy new year everyone.

Jonny sent me a Christmas card. My children were very intrigued by this unusual snowman he'd drawn inside. I had to hide the card on a high shelf before they worked out what was going on.
Hope everyone's having a very merry time.

First of all, a massive thank you to everyone who has jumped on this Patreon early doors. We're overwhelmed by your pre-Christmas kindness and genuinely very grateful.
As some sort of feeble thank you, here is a playlist of some things that were mentioned in the latest episode of the podcast.

Sometimes on the podcast Richard mentions that he has a doc on his phone of things he's noted down to bring up with Jonny on the show. The current notes document is a bit bare - except for the eternal and mysterious 'fizzy yoghurt' - but he found this old page of notes, some of which seem to date back to when Smith and Sniff were still able to make videos. Some of these things are mysterious, even to the person who wrote them.

Welcome to the Smith and Sniff Patreon. If you're here, you probably know what Smith and Sniff is about. It's two men who talk nonsense about cars, and many other things.
We used to make videos in which we'd attempt to review cars and discuss important matters such as Paul Hollywood's beard, and sometimes we'd do this while eating crisps, much to the horror of many viewers.
When 2020 became the year of keeping apart Smith and Sniff turned into a weekly podcast and that...
