Volume 5 page 121

As Guillotine removes pawns, the blank squares may prove more perilous than the pieces themselves ever were...  Commander Cal stands in a dark room, on the precipice of an invisible abyss.

Wednesday Art-ifact: Vanth Development

Dave and I sat at a coffee shop and worked on the best way to show Vanth's expressions.  We tried head stripes, different bat-like noses, a variety of hair lengths to create this character.

Tuesday Art-ifact: Vanth Development

Using a bat as reference, designing this character's legs became the next obstacle.  We tried shorter legs, skirts, and how the arms would work.  The images on the left were preliminary while the image on the right was much closer to the final version.  The hat was carried through.

Monday Art-ifact: Vanth Development

Vanth was one of our most recent characters to be designed.  We already had the Lilith and Mace Prelude stories, but wanted one that would include Bast.  Her name began as 'Sly'.  Several challenges in design came into play including how to wear a sweatshirt when you have wings on your arms.

Sunday Art-ifact: Lilith Development

Although there are many pages of Lilith's character, we are going to be switching Vanth next.  The images above were used for promotional cards and banners showing Lilith as a zombie for Halloween and a Christmas costume when gifted books were running late in the mail.

All of these images are from the stickers created in 2007.  Previously we were using the character swatches as stickers at conventions.

ART ATTACK: MASTERMIND BACKERS!

I found the last bit of Volume 4 original pencil art (the very end of the book) and would like to send you a piece of your very own!

Supply is very limited, so please send me a private message if you would like a sheet.  The pencil artwork is a range of Nainso, Tia, Ravat, or behind the scenes pieces, all used to create Volume 4.

Friday Art-ifact: Lilith Development

The picture on the left was intended to become a print of Lilith in her natural element, studying for school.  This was around 2005, prior to Volume 1 being completed.  The sticker on the right was created in 2007.

Thursday Art-ifact: Lilith Development

After some color swatches, Lilith became green to represent a life/plant power.  The pictures above were meant to be included in a cast poster.  Cuddles, the Ryuu-neko, and the species of Ryuu were created to give Lilith a little more depth as a character.  Usually a cartoon character will stick to one costume, like Mace or Namah, but Lilith requires a different outfit nearly every scene.

Wednesday Art-ifact: Lilith Development

The names of Lilith and Namah (spelled naamah originally) are from Mesopotamian lore, but in the story, Lilith is the evil demon, not Naamah.  The name Lilith had a softer sound to it, and hinted that perhaps Lilith would become a dark dreamkeeper, which was part of the concept for a very long time.  Ezioauditore97 assisted in Lilith's colors on this page, thank you very much!  The page on the right is a scan of a destroyed sketchbook that showed expression development.  View Post

Tuesday Art-ifact: Lilith Concept

Being the daughter of the Viscount, Lilith plays the part (to some degree) as the princess to Mace's poor orphan trope.  Several different color schemes were applied when Lilith was adapted, include one of her being pink.  This was when Dreamkeepers was slated to be an animated show.

Monday Art-ifact: Lilith Concept

Lilith is one of our oldest characters, and her roots are from Dave's Redemption and Realm stories.  As you can see from the pictures, she started as a human character and was adapted to be feline for the Dreamkeepers story.

Sunday Art-ifact: Vi Concept

According to the graphic novel story, Vi was to be in the troika and have a tragic ending to her story.  More time was spent developing her story in Prelude, however, and because of her new purpose in Prelude, the graphic novel tale was rewritten to be a softer conclusion than planned.

More graphite renders for backers of campaigns.  Coloring provided by fabulous Ezioauditore97.  Although there are more pages of artwork featuring Vi, we are moving on to Lilith conc...

Friday Art-ifact: Vi Concept

Some very old renders of Vi in the troika.  The sketch in the lower right was planning for an image that would appear in a video.  Although Vi is not the main character of Dreamkeepers, her strong silhouette makes her a perfect model and design.  Colors are provided by the fabulous ezioauditore97.  Vi's pink and black was Liz's color choice for Vi.  It often appears in feminine product lines, such as Victoria's Secret and Juice Couture.

Thursday Art-ifact: Vi Concept

A rough warm up of Vi expressions, and the pencils to a fall print based around Vi playing fallguard in school.  While we had definite plans for Vi in Prelude and its arcs, Vi's story with the troika was much more vague and open ended.

The upper right sketch is a rough plan for what would later appear on the website.  The lower left pencils became a popular art print as well as the back of the Prelude 1 book.  My goal in these pages is to show the lines and work that you would normally overlook in a finished art piece.  Ezioauditore97 provided Vi's colors on this page.

Tuesday Art-ifact: Vi Concept

The second image was used as Vi's color swatch.  The other images were intended to be sticker designs in 2008, but we chose the one on the right to be the final.  A brief doodle of Vi in troika appears here.  Coloring on this page is by the fabulous Ezioauditore97 who is helping on this project.  We plan on releasing a chronological order concept book sometime around Prelude 2's release.

Monday Art-ifact: Vi Concept

These are the earliest sketches we have of Vi.  When developing Prelude ideas, which happened after Volume 1 was finished, we needed a female character to appear for a specific Prelude arc (which hasn't happened yet, btw) so Viriathus was created.  Named after a general, we call her Vi.  I love the expressions on the right, they were scanned in from a later destroyed sketch book.

Art-ifact Poll Results

Oh, you funny people.  I put out a character poll, and what comes back but a tie for third place.  So what happened was, Vi took the first week (starting tomorrow) then Lilith came in for second place, being the second week, and Vanth and Namah came in for third, meaning I will give two additional character weeks for them as well.  Cute.  LOL, well played.

Beginning tomorrow, I will be posting a visual timeline of Vi's character development starting with t...
