Sonon Kusakabe

A peak into the process.  I plan on painting this headshot like my other ones but as I'm working on new paper and am not sure how badly I might fuck this up, I decided to scan my line art now so I can paint this digitally if need be.   The line work is actually quite light in real life so I darkened it for visibility.  

Cloud X Sonon

Procreate has been such a fun place to explore new styles and let loose and feel less trapped by my own process.  I don't know if it's as satisfying as painting, but the flexibility means I can achieve effects I'd rarely or arduously get traditionally.  All this to say, heres some smut.  Sonon is a hottie, I'll have to do a piece where you can actually see his face.

It's been really fun exploring the range of features SE Asian and Asian people have.  I got into a minor, mild Twitter spat the other month about not making a character look "Asian enough."  And while I admit I am not perfect in capturing features every single time I do a painting, I was a bit taken aback by this person's notion that Asian faces have to have slitty, slanty eyes in order to read Asian.  We can have big eyes, small eyes, tall noses, flat noses, round cheeks, angl...

And Now, A New Kind of Headshot

I've been in a weird place in general these days, but especially with my art.  I want to start exploring new avenues and new topics that I feel need more exposure.  As an exercise, I've started doing these quick headshots of Asian and SE Asian male/masc presenting faces.  You may see the work here start to stray a bit more from comics and I hope you enjoy it enough to stick around!  More to come.

Self Portrait

DC Pride 2022 Anthology Announced!

I contributed a Pride variant cover for Nubia: Queen of the Amazons!  Creative team is Stephanie Williams, Alitha Martinez and Mark Morales and it will be out in June.

Sometimes A Piece Misses The Mark

Hey, skittles!  Just wanted to walk y'all through this Storm piece, based on Russell Dauterman's GORGE new design.  I didn't have much of a game plan going in to it - I wanted to be confident and just attack the paper.  Often, that leads to very exciting mark making and organic results.  Sometimes, the painting goes off the rails and I end up with something that I find to be unsuccessful.

Once I started with Storm's skin, the blending of the pigments didn't go my way...

Scan To Finished

I love sharing the scanned watercolors of my pieces because it gives y'all a better idea of how much gets done digitally.  This amount of "digital icing" isn't usual for me, but I've been doing more 50/50 traditional vs. digital lately as it helps me move faster.  I think it's become a good marriage - there's still some warmth and texture from the watercolor and a lot of finesse that gets done digitally that I can't do outside the computer.

Bishop PaperXmen Doll!

Ok, I finally finished up my Bishop dolls for y'allll.  I don't know much about Bishop, tbh, but I think he's a great character and has had some wonderful designs.  I often have more fun with characters I know less about because I'm less beholden to nostalgia - I kinda just get to let loose and go wild.  My favorite are looks #1 and #3.  Which are working or not working for ya?

Gladdy Daddy is packing.  Tried to just let loose and attack this piece.  Worry less about the outcome and just go for it.  It still took me FOREVER (thanks, eagle tattoo) but he's finally here!

Pausing Membership For December

Soooooo I didn't fulfill on content for October and I apologize.  I'm going to keep this brief because papa is still super busy, and this isn't the most fun post to make.

Also, a look at my layers/flats. I usually do a flat layer that encompasses the entire figure, then color in all the various components to the figure. Next I add texture to each layer and do clipping masks to add volume and rendering.
