Cold Stone

Greetings patrons! All of the time I am writing music, and many days I start tracks that never go anywhere. I think it is wonderful and very necessary as an artist to always engage in the process. In today's world of pointless content production, the filling of spaces like Spotify or YouTube, and with brutally cynical technology like Generative AI actively devaluing the process of art by automating human expression, it is easy and common to gloss over how important the process is. How wonderf...

Dioramas

Hey patrons. I'll keep this simple. I've been making a few dioramas the past week and I wanted to share a couple here, as well as a little about the process I use to make them.

Often I find that I have ideas for things that I have no experience learning how to bring forth from the "ideal" into the "form". The ideas I have are not any one thing in particular - they're not visual, they're not mus...

Limitations and Creativity

Oh boy! I have thoughts and I want to share them.

This is something that is extremely important to me. It's vital that you understand. Limitations can be a good thing, but arbitrarily ruling to limit things because you believe it will make something better is wrong, and I will be arguing that for the rest of this post.

Bound to Roam - Vocals and other thoughts.

Wow! Here is a little vocal thing for you. What is this little vocal thing? Glad you asked!

I often visit the woods all over Arkansas to find quiet beautiful places where it's just the trees and me, as well as possibly a little river (because there are many little rivers that wander and sometimes lazily pool in mossy grottos), and finding these places is relatively easy because everywhere in Nature is beautiful! However, finding specific places can be really difficult sometim...

Thoughts about LIGHTS.

Wow! This post is for everyone!

It's somehow the tenth anniversary of the release of LIGHTS. I was such a little baby (25 years old) at the time. I had absolutely no idea how badly my optimism about life would be punished in such a short span of time, but here we are!

LIGHTS is of course an album about death and loss. They say write about what you know! Well, I hope this post gives you some insight about something. Exactly what I cannot say for sure.

The Water Carries The Memory

Hello again. Here is for you a story whose original form appeared on Twitter as a thread which I wrote nearly a year ago now. I have taken that story and formatted it such that it reads like a proper short story now, and now I am sharing it here. Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy.

Spread before me is an endless horizon of pools; lakes, watery mirrors which catch the light of ancient recollection, untouched and unremembered. I am not prepared for what it me...

Project Updates + Story Time!

Happy Saturday to everyone who is experiencing Saturday! Today I have thoughts, as well as a story, which I wish to share with you - but that will be a separate text post coming after this. First, thoughts.

- PROJECTIONS -

I mentioned it briefly in my Discord server a couple weeks back, but PROJECTIONS was featured as part of the bundle sold for the 2023 Jingle Jam hosted by Yogscast, recently. That's kinda cool right? I don't know. I fixed a few things in the game, but...

Early Headlights...!

Hello Patrons. Today a quick post about two things! First, a sketch version of Headlights...

There's a lot of ways songwriting unfolds for me, but probably the most common is that I'll be experimenting with programming some synthesizer, and there will be a sudden transition from exploring sounds, to exploring the melodies those sounds invite naturally as a result of their unique qualities. Songs like Lights, Arana Sleeps, Lakes, and here, Headlights, are just a couple examples of this p...

The Fire Diamond

Hey Patreon weirdos! I was digging through some files yesterday for who knows what and I came across these old images I had taken while creating the setup for The Fire Diamond, as seen in Visions in Fire.

Wherever possible, I like to achieve effects "in camera", using images shot with a photography camera, or in this case, a digital film camera like the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera. The BMPC...

HEADLIGHTS (coming soon)

Hey Patrons. I hope your week has been going well. Today I am sharing with you a little info about a song I have been dreaming up over the last 3 years which I am planning to release October 1st - called Headlights.

---

Oh, before that though - I haven't been using Twitter since around mid-July. Social media tires me out and I had not intended to continue messing with it. But the isolation that I felt without the ability to "express" how I was feeling - random blurbs, thoughts, sp...

Fire (a short story + thoughts on writing)

Greetings patrons. I have been lately working on writing more longish material, straightly put. For years I have put a stop on myself in accordance with the cramped constraints of Dead Bird-site's character limitations for ideas that reach not-very-far from their beginnings, and in music, I strongly believe brevity adds depth to poetic phrases: Saying as much as you can in small spaces has a tendency, with some effort, to evolve plain and overcomplicated ideas into cleverly simple on...

Music Release - TIDES

Hey all. I've got a track for you today. It's called Tides. I'm releasing it here on Patreon first, and in the next few days, it will be released on Bandcamp. I hope you'll stick with me, as I've some things to say about it.

---

Tides represents a complete shift in how I approach mixing and mastering. For the first time since 2015 I have altered my monitoring setup and this has drastically changed how I am able to interact with the audio I make. I'm very pleased with how this tran...

Commission - Atayaska

Hello everyone. Today I am happy to share with you a commission requested by the artist Lore. When she approached me with this concept I was very pleased with the potential for a piece of music that would be easy for me to enjoy creating, and for the way that it would integrate into the kind of storytelling that Lore engages in.

Atayaska is a song about Lore's character Sinuk, and specificall...

Commission - Between Layers

Greetings! This weekend I have a commissioned track to share with you. Requested by Crimson, this is a track "in the style of RUNNING" - for which I was quite grateful, as RUNNING is one of my favorite albums, and one I would very much like to revisit stylistically.

RUNNING I conceived of originally as music to suit the at-the-tim...

To The Forest! And the structure of music.

Helllooo Patrons! I've been thinking a lot about To The Forest! and I thought I would share some of those things with you.

Technically, To The Forest! is my favorite song that I have produced, and there's a couple reasons why. Of course with all of the music and sound I design, I learn something new with ev...

Current Projects Update + Welcome!

Hey. If you're seeing this you're paying something to support me. First, thank you so much. I really need all the support I can get currently.

This post is just a general idea about what I have been doing the last couple months. It's stuff I wouldn't share publicly because I don't have a need to. But since you're here...
