Backstage with a Maquette: new lessons this weekend

I got some new camera equipment. Tested it out for the value demo video. I just finished editing the lesson video. That will be uploaded tomorrow. And I’m editing the demo video tomorrow. That should be up on Sunday. I’m pretty excited for these videos. I think they turned out good!

I ended up experimenting by making a maquette for reference for the demo video. I’ve never done that before. I’ll explain it more in the video. But here’s a little teaser

Almost Finished/ Framing options

Almost done. Just a few details left on the painting part. Then I'm going to put a little varnish on it.

Since this is such an odd size I can't frame it like I normally would. And there's no way I'm doing custom framing that would be against the rules and I can't afford it!

So I'm going to mount it to a surface that will fit in one of the frames I found at the thrift store.

I found some scrapbooking paper in my mom's storage. I'm planning to adhere a piece of the paper...

Making Progress on the 6

Or is this 9? I'm almost positive it's 6.

If 6 was 9 by Jimi Hendrix rips.

I started the actual painting stage. started with the background, moving on to the underpainting of the 6 figure.

I'm feeling good about my prompt submission this time!

Prompt Progress

I'll say more about finding this object when I do a video about it.

I was really disappointed in my submission for the texture prompt last month. So this month I decided "never again."

I'm experimenting with designing my paintings in photoshop before painting. So the last image is my photo shop version of what I'm going to paint.

I actually really like doing it in photoshop first. You can undo stuff and play around with ideas more easily. I recorded the process doing that so...

Porcelain Membrane

Process video and music.

I started this piece while I was watching the show "Barry" on HBO. Have any of you seen that?

My favorite character/ story line is NoHo Hank.

I really wanted to make some new music and a process video is always a good excuse for that non sense.

Should I make a process video about making one of the beats?

Mixing Media on the Blue

This colored pencil on top of acrylic paint on blue toned paper. I took a lot of video of this one. Hopefully I'll have it edited tomorrow.

I did the decalcomania technique with White acrylic paint and Saran Wrap. then started adding color and definition with colored pencils.

Kind of odd mediums to use in that way.

Going to the show at La ...

I just uploaded Scum Choir Beats vol. I to Bandcamp

It's a 30 track beat tape. It's mostly beats I made for videos from 2020-2022. I've made a lot of different sounding beats over the years. this one is more on the horror/spooky side of things.

The album is currently set to private so the Choir can get the first listen. I'm also including some free download codes for it in the description.

Please vote on the artwork!

I wanted to do this as a poll, but I can't add images to polls. I've captioned eac...

Prismacolor Timelapse

Short timelapse of part of the drawing process. Prismacolor on texture rubbing on Blue Paper. I have some more WIP experiments on the blue paper that I'm filming more of the process on. But hers one to whet your beak.

Any title suggestions?

Colored Pencil on Blue Toned Paper

I made a rubbing on some textured glass. I used a white colored pencil for the rubbing. Usually when I do this, the rubbing texture becomes the darker values because I use a black pencil. so the texture recedes when I start rendering. This is the opposite, the texture becomes the the lighter value. The paper is already at a middle value. then I add the shadows in.

It's hard to describe in text.

I've been enjoying the feeling of Prismacolor pencils on this blue toned pa...

Suggestion time! Random Drawings, The Hard Drive Saga is Over!

Coming soon in the Choir

I got a bunch of stuff in the works right now. New paintings emerging. Videos will follow that. Bad Art lessons being prepared including the next topic in the fundamentals: Value.

I just finished a biography that will be the subject of the next Art Life and Lives. I'm about to start working on it. And I'm super excited about it.

I'm going to be uploading some of my music to Bandcamp. I'm hoping to give the Choir free and early access.

I'll pr...

The Scribble Scrabble Method

One of the creative doodling methods I mentioned was the scribble scrabble method, where you just scribble wildly and then add shading, patterns, textures, and thicker lines to add depth.

I didn't get very far in the scribble scrabble piece I did in the Creative Doodling lesson. So I made a video of a more complete scribble scrabble doodle.

Creative Doodling-Intro to Drawing Bad Art

Part of the struggle of learning the technical fundamentals is that it can start feeling like work and less like art. So I think it's important to have little methods and techniques like this where you can forget about all the concepts and just let your mind run wild.

I'm going to start branching out the Bad Art course to include "alternative" approaches to drawing. Instead of waiting to finish the technical fundamentals first, as I had initially planned, I'm just going to start doing i...

Painting WIPs, Bad Luck, and Hard Drive Update

I've had a string of bad luck this past week or so. There was the spider hard drive incident.

I started working off of a different hard drive and I accidentally unplugged it while using it. And that drive got corrupted too!

Two hard drives in one week.

I cut my finger open with a box cutter the other day. There's been other things not going so well recently. I've just felt kind of down and out of it. But I won't bore you with that.

I'll bore you with the da...

Live Painting from Goth Night

I did two paintings at the Goth Night event that I did. The overhead camera I use has a timelapse feature that I've never really used. So for the second painting I decided to try it out.

Part of the silver lining of this hard drive disaster is that it's really forcing me to consider other options and ways of doing things.

Leviathan Goth Night Set Up

I participated in an art show in LA called Leviathan Goth Night. I painted live at the show. Here's the only video I took of the event. It's of my set up, my friend Jeremy's art, and some guy in a mask. This was the day of the hard drive fiasco, so my mind was elsewhere. I really should've taken more video. It was an interesting night to say the least. There were a lot of other artists, vendors of oddities, perfor...

Painting From a Motel Room-Living as a Question on Staycation

Every year around this time I get burnt out. Then I get depressed. So last year I decided I'd take a little staycation around this time.

I threw a dart at a map (sort of) I typed in "motels," clicked randomly and made a reservation.

I love motels, but they are very lonely places. And I really resonated with David Whyte's "Alone"

“To be alone for any length of time is to shed an outer skin. The body is inhabited in a different way when we are alone than...

I lost a years worth of work in a second+No Country for Old Men+Buddhism: Sketch Book Saturday June 2023

It's time for another sketchbook saturday. I checked into a motel recently. Just to get into a new environment and do some simple watercolor sketching. I was planning to post a video about that experience today.

But while I was editing the video, a huge spider ran across the floor and it freaked me out. I stood up too fast to try and catch the spider to throw it outside. The external hard drive that I edit off of, bumped into something and got corrupted.

So I don't know what...

WIPs and chains

Here's all of the current work in progress pieces I have in the rotation right now. About 13 of them are definitely going places. Some of them I started as long ago as last year. some are just a few days.

I haven't been posting as many real time progress shots lately because I know that Patreon emails you every time I post and I don't want to be blowing up your inbox every day. I also record everything that I make and turn it into a video and I like to show the progress that way.&...

The sketch that started it all

This string thing was the catalyst for the new paintings I've been posting. I made this video a while ago. It was interesting for me to watch.

I did the string thing part of it maybe in January or February. Then it sat in my book for a month or two because of reasons I lay out in the video.

I couldn't figure out which medium to use to paint what I was seeing, then I felt like it was a dumb idea. Then gouache came into my life. like a romantic comedy film.

I intially bo...

All the tiny paintings

Here's all the tiny pieces

All the gouache ones are in those frames with little stands so you can look at them on your bedside before you go to sleep or keep them on your desk at work like where most people put a picture of their family.

The acrylic ones all come with a tooth so you can hang it on a nail on your wall. But don't think you can't hang it on your office wall. You can!

Process: "Oopsly" Tiny Gouache 4

I definitely named this "oopsly" because there's a girl I teach that says "oopsly" instead of "oopsies." Sometimes I find out that funny stuff kids say like that is from a movie or something. Which always makes me disappointed in the world, naturally. So maybe that's what this is. But don't tell me if it is.

This was the first tiny gouache I did. It's the closest one to the initial sketch that inspired these pieces. But I still don't think I was able to capture whatever magic I captured...

Process: Pee Pee Face Tiny Gouache 3

This is another one where I more or less abandoned the string thing. I was trying to do some Rembrandt style lighting and the combination of the two things was just getting too complex. so I simplified it.

I gave it a silly name. I think I heard one kid call another kid that one time.

I'm looking forward to this one! gotta thank the choir for your suggestions. I don't know if I would have thought to do this one on my own. I think it will be a challenge and I'm looking for...

Unguided tour of the Hive Gallery

I actually didn't end up recording that much, towards the end of the night there was a guy who had some kind of psychotic breakdown and started throwing art off the walls.

The Hive Gallery is the gallery that I have a residency space at. I'll probably do another tour sometime because it's a really big bustling place. This was during their Clown Themed show.

The Hive opened in 2005 and is a super unique place. there's two gallery spaces in the front. they have new openings every mo...

Dark Art Emporium Unguided Tour-Tiny Terrors 2023

Here's a little unguided tour of the Dark Art Emporium in Long Beach, CA. I took this video at the opening of the Tiny Terrors show. They've been doing this show for 6 years now. That's why the 666. This is their 3rd location and the best in my opinion. They now have a pizza place and bar in the front called the 4th Horseman. As you Can hear they play a lot of death metal, thrash metal, and black metal in there.

I like that they've taken their initial idea of being a dark art gall...

Process: "Bacchus" Tiny Acrylic 3

This piece was the most straight forward of the series. I hate to say it but I think it's because I just started painting and didn't really go after the texture.

I was definitely influenced by Caravaggio's Bacchus paintings. Especially after I had painted the head and there was this nice little space for the hand to be holding something. I knew it had to be a wine glass.
