Tutorial suggestions

Hey folks! I'm planning to make another tutorial next week. I already have some topics in mind, but I was also wondering what you guys would like to know. Leave a suggestion if you have one!

First week of animation completed!

I started production on the new toon last week and things are going well so far! about 40 seconds are fully animated, which is way faster than usual. I have some more dificult shots coming up, so those might take longer, but as for now: We're shmooving.

Here's one of the less spoiler-heavy shots I animated. This time around my storyboards were way more on-model, so figuring out the key poses was fairly easy. It's always fun to see how the final animation differs from storyboards, but t...

Strong Gamer!

Storyboards are done! Not going to show those until after the project is done, though. In the meantime, have a look at this character from the next episode!

Storyboards have begun!

Hey folks! I have just begun boarding on the next episode, and it's looking to be a little longer than the last one!

I try to stay out of spoiler territory with these updates (I don't want to spoil any punchlines before the full thing releases) but I will say that this next episode takes place in the ol' familiar apartment once again.

In the future I have plans to introduce more characters, more locations, and perhaps shake up the character dynamics a bit. But first I feel that it...

Animation Tutorial: How I do inbetweens

Hiya folks, as promised, here is the first animation tutorial. I'll try to get these out once a month, but no promises on that front, since I am quite busy as of late. Let me know if there's any topic you'd like to hear about next!

Art & Davey: Gum Storyboards

I am usually very rough and off-model with my storyboards, I figured nobody is going to see these but me, so who cares. (little did I know)

It's always fun to compare the end-product to the boards I started out with: I usually add a whole bunch of acting choices while animating. Story choices too! The ending with the taser originally didn't even exist. The short originally ended with "this is just normal gum" but I felt like that wasn't strong enough of a punchline.

Destructulon! Unfinished film.

I figured I could put this on Patreon as a bit of a Christmas present. Art & Davey was my graduation film for animation school, but before I made that film, I had a completely separate idea altogether.

It was about a supervillain named Destructulon, who desperately wanted to find his arch nemesis, only to be sabotaged by Captain Cockroach: the wimpiest superhero in the whole galaxy.

In the end, it turned out to be a bit too ambitious for the time I had left, and I pivoted to s...

Updated the apartment complex.

As a final touch for the next Art & Davey, I am redesigning their apartment complex a bit. Aside from a slight change in Art direction, I also figured I’d add some detail to make the building feel more believable (I didn’t really like how it was just a concrete block with windows before) This is my last post on here before the full short comes online somewhere this weekend. Stay tuned!

Art & Davey Backgrounds

These some of the backgrounds I illustrated for Art& Davey.

The short was my graduation project for an animation course I was following, and deadlines were tight, so a lot of these aren't quite as detailed as I would have initially liked.

In the end, I feel like it was a blessing in disguise. The simplicity of the backgrounds makes every action that happens on screen very readable.

It also helped reinforce the vibe I was going for: I wanted their apartment to feel like t...

Art & Davey - Demon Speedpaint.

Creating the demon was a long process (you can probably already tell by how long the "speed" paint is)

Even before I decided to make the Demon a hand-painted puppet, he already underwent a lot of redesigns.

I wanted something cartoony, yet terrifying out of him. I eventually realized that the best way to do that, was to stray from the style I had previously established with Art & Davey's designs.

It's funny. I have always liked drawing these hyper-detailed, gruesome mons...
