Treehouse of Horror - round up!

A strange episode with a strange cast of characters. Only two of them are human!

The focus on pre-existing characters (in this instance, only the family) means there's not much room for many wacky ancillary characters or small roles with a single line (the mover is the closest we have to that), so we got through this one quickly. But look at the weirdos we did get! After the onslaught of people in suits we had in Simpson and Delilah (and spoiler alert, the next episode features a lot of...

0280 - Raven

A few fun facts about ravens for your Thursday:

- Ravens are the largest perching bird in the world.

- A raven's diet consists mainly of roadkill.

- Ravens can eat of to one-third of their weight at a time.

- Ravens have a vocabulary of around 20 sounds (unclear if "nevermore" is one of them, although they can imitate human speech.)

- Ravens have an IQ roughly equal to ...

BONUS! Edgar Allen Poe and Lenore

Two non-speaking characters from this segment (please excuse the extremely low-quality of this Poe shot, it's a single pan his bust appears in and apparently my DVD rip was not ready for it.)

In preparation for this week I read "The Raven" in full for the first time. And my conclusion is...it's good?...

0279 - Narrator

Here's where we run into some Treehouse of Horror shenanigans for the first time, and probably not the last. This is Homer, but it's...not Homer. It won't surprise anyone to learn that we covered Homer a while back - way back at the start of the project - but are characters like this narrator di...

BONUS! Rigellian

In our extensive coverage of this segment we can determine that there are at LEAST four aliens on the ship the Simpsons board.

There is no evidence to suggest more than these four appear, so it felt mean to exclude the one who does not speak.

I hope I don't have to draw another of these identical looking jerks again for quite a while. I swear I didn't just copy and paste them. Frankly, I...

0278 - Kodos

The Simpsons has a few duos that are hard to keep track of. Here's a cheat sheet so you can differentiate:

Patty and Selma - after a few appearances you can tell which has which hairstyle. Additionally, Selma has S-shaped earrings occasionally.

Rod and Todd - they look different and are different ages so it should be easy, right? Right?

Sherri and Terri - Sherri is the evil one.

Lenny and Carl - Lenny is white, Carl is black.

Kang and Kodos - Kang is voiced by Ha...

Moe money, Moe problems. Here's week 2 of Moevember, featuring David Moe-ie, Moe-two, Moenataur, Play-Moe-bil, Moe-gaman, Moe-fasa, Moe-nenberg and Moedusa.

This is all very silly. I like it.

0277 - Serak The Preparer

Were you expecting someone else?

Kodos is introduced by name after Kang, but does not speak - the next Rigellian to speak is Serak, the ship's cook.

Serak is the second character to be voiced by James Earl Jones in this episode, and his voice is also perfect for this. The way he says the intentionally cumbersome line "This will give the humans the perfect flavour" is etched into my mind,...

0276 - Kang

Kang is the first alien to introduce himself to the family in "Treehouse of Horror"'s second segment, "Hungry Are The Damned". Kang is also consistently the Rigellian voiced by Harry Shearer, as is the case here.

He and his sister are a mainstay of the Treehouse of Horror episodes. being the only characters outside the main Simpson family to make an appearance in every Treehouse episode, even ...

Patreon Print - November 2023

After last month's controversial diversion (well, it wasn't as controversial as I thought it'd be, I'm glad people liked it), we're back on a Simpsons inspired piece this month. Some of you may have even seen me paint this piece live on stream a few weeks back! It was third place in the recent poll, so here we are. Spoiler: I already have these prints, they look fantastic!

0275 - Bad Dream House

It's the Bad Dream House from Bad Dream House!

Yes, Halloween is over but we still have most of the episode to cover.

If you had asked me beforehand I would have misremembered the house as being voiced by James Earl Jones - he would have been perfect for it - but Shearer does a great job too! It genuinely is kinda spooky at times.

This first segment of non-canon horror goodness is ...

BONUS! - Homer in Ghost Costume

This is only the 16th episode of the show, so I can understand there being some trepidation in breaking format so brazenly for this unique idea. In order to ensure that this episode still works within the world and continuity of the show, the framing device of the stories being told by the children on Halloween is added, and it's easy to forget that this is where the name of the episode comes from. Later Treehouse of Horror episodes drop the framing device conceit, as tradition is cemented an...

0274 - Mover

We're finally covering a Treehouse of Horror episode! These are obviously very important traditions in the Simpsons mythos, not only because of them allowing things to get a bit spooky/weird/non-canon, but also because of them normalising the idea of these three-segment formats in animated shows. After a few years of following this format for Halloween episodes, we soon see them utilise this to explore other themes such as the Bible or Greek myth. Furthermore, soon other animated shows such a...

Simpson and Delilah - round up!

Still very much enjoying our journey through season 2 - I dare say this is even the best episode we have covered yet! That's probably not saying much, but it's true. Despite that, not many important characters here - basically only Karl has any lasting legacy, and even he is only voiced in this episode.

Of course, the elephant in the room is the second episode in a row with a NCHC of 0%. I don't know what's happening here, if their hat budget simply ran out in season 2, or if hats were ...

0273 - Man

The final character for this episode is so insignificant that I'm not even going to provide an image of him from the show - check the post for "0272 - Man" if you want to refamiliarize yourself with him.

These episodes keep going out with a whimper, not a bang. Really knocks the wind out of the sail in all this momentum we're building as we add to this ever increasing pile of characters.

Oh well.

0272 - Man

We're rounding out the week, and the episode, with two absolute nobodies who don't even have the common decency to turn and face the camera for their big spotlight moment.

They are unimpressed with Homer's (or Karl's) speech. So unimpressed, in fact, that they never show up again.

BONUS! Washroom Band, Bird, and Hairy Bart

I suspect this band is a specific reference to some artwork or cartoonist, and that I am about to be shamed in the comments for not recognising what it is:

I feel a little more sure that this bird is not a specific reference:

And the biggest reference of all: this bearded child is actuall...

0271 - Executive

This is the guy that Burns points to, briefly, before moving to Homer.

The most noteworthy thing about him other than this moment is his striking resemblance to Joey Jojo Jr Shabadoo!

0269 - Executive

Everyone left in this episode is worthless. WORTHLESS I TELL YA. All the speaking characters we have left are single-appearance nobodies, even this guy with a somewhat unique hair design.

He suggests a round of layoffs at the plant, he's mean, so I'm glad he disappears forever

Take a good look at most of these jerks, as you'll never be seeing them again.

0268 - Singer

Considering this is a true one-off character, he certainly has a memorable moment:

I'm not going to sugar coat it: the rest of this episode is made up of real nobodies, and quite a few at that - it's a real "Who's who?" of "Who cares?" - but when you see this guy you can instantly recall his performance of "You Are So Beautiful", a real unique rendition from Castellaneta. This song ...

"I Don't Hate This" - Watercolour Collection!

Hello/hi!

Here is my brand new book, "I Don't Hate This" - a collection of my Simpsons watercolours from the last 18 months. I picked my absolute favourites, here are over 100 of them in one book. Maybe you've seen 'em, but maybe not! I hope you enjoy.

0267 - Karl

Karl is the most significant character introduced in this episode, and is perhaps one of the most single celebrated single-appearance characters of all time.

His devotion to his boss - to the extent that he would rather ultimately quit his position as Homer's assistant rather than see Homer fail - is remarkably odd. Because we, the audience, want Homer to succeed, we do not question this devot...

Another single appearance character, as far as I can tell.

At least she's slightly more memorable than the guy from Monday, whoever that was, in that she has a point to exist in the scene. Homer's refusal of her advances, and Marge's subsequent jealousy, are sort of cute, but then the episode moves on completely - a "Homer hires an overly flirty assistant" plot would be fine for most sitcoms, ...
