Patron update!

Just a quick update for March!

Upcoming Episodes

The next episode, ANTICIPATION - The Twelve Principles of Animation in Games, is still in the works. It's been weird working on this one; I've encountered my first-ever case of what I'm just going to call "editor's block". I spent an entire day editing it in Premiere last week and somehow got nowhere. For whatever reason, this particular episode is just being difficult, which is incredibly frustrating!

I'm going to keep at it, but if I can't manage to make decent progress in the next few days I'm going to back-burner Anticipation and put out the call for patron topic ideas! Who knows, maybe working on a different video for a bit will help? :P

The Next Q&A Stream

The next Q&A stream will take place on Sunday, March 15th at 11AM Pacific! I'll send out another reminder with a link the day before.

That's all for now! Let me know if you have any questions, and thanks for your patience!

UPDATE: The video is now live and viewable by all!

The next episode is done! Once captions are ready, it'll go live. Thanks for choosing such a neat topic, and I hope y'all enjoy!

Like I mentioned in the patron update a few days back, this one turned out to be a beefy project, way bigger than I generally aim for patron-request episodes to go. I'm going to try to keep the next few smaller in scope so we can do them more often.

Let me know if you have any questions!

WIP Episode Preview: "The Animation of Phoenix Wright"

It's nearly done! I still need to do some polish-y stuff, of course. I want to manually remove a bunch of the full-screen flashes for the sake of those with photosensitivity. I also want to try adding some more of the games' sound effects back into the mix to see how that feels. I'm entertaining the idea of putting game titles in the bottom corner for the sake of people who don't immediately recognize them, though I'm still on the fence. And of course it still needs captions, and the list of patrons at the end needs updating.

Otherwise, though, it's pretty much done! Enjoy, and let me know if you spot any problems!

Happy February!

Upcoming Episodes

The next episode, The Animation of Phoenix Wright (or The Animation of Ace Attorney, I can't decide) is nearly complete! I should have a WIP render ready for $8 patrons in the next day or so. This one took a LOT longer than I expected, but I'm happy with how it's turning out and I hope you will be too.

Fortunately, the scripts for the next two episodes, Anticipation - The Twelve Principles of Animation in Games and The Animation of Monster Hunter are both written already, so I'm hoping the turnaround on those will be faster!

And after that, it will be time for another patron-requested episode! More on that topic in a moment.

The Next Live Q&A

The next stream will take place on February 16th at 11AM Pacific. I look forward to hanging out!

Patron-requested Episodes

I want to make a slight adjustment to how these are handled! The intent with patron-requested episodes from the start was that they were to meant to be:

1. more narrowly-focused than regular episodes, usually on just one single animation.

2. a little easier and faster to produce.

3. released more frequently, thus allowing y'all to pick topics more often!

As you might be able to tell, none of those things have happened haha. If anything, the requested episodes have been getting bigger. This Phoenix Wright episode turned into a beast, with footage capture alone requiring 30-something hours, minimum. I'm proud of how all these have been turning out, but I REALLY want to be able to make these more quickly, both for the sake of channel growth and to give you folks more chances to pick topics!

So, in order to facilitate that, I'm renewing my efforts to prevent scope creep. I'm going to try to make the next three patron-requested episodes be about one single animation, as originally intended, and I'm going to try to get those videos made more quickly. Once those next three are out, we can see how we feel about the results. Sound good?

We're a little ways off from the next topic suggestion survey, but be thinking about what sort of animations you'd like to see a video about! I'm excited to start fulfilling more of those requests. :D

And that's about it! Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks everyone!

FINALLY.  Now, normally this post would be exclusively for patrons at $8 or higher, but Patreon's post visibility controls are bugging out right now and frankly y'all have been kept waiting for updates long enough.

Sorry for the long wait between episodes, everyone! I plan to have the next video ready MUCH faster. Enjoy, and let me know if you spot any problems!

Happy holidays, everyone!

Hey y’all! I hope you are having a wonderful end of 2019, however you’re spending it. :)

I wanted to start by saying apologies for the scarcity of new episodes in the last couple months! Holiday workload got pretty overwhelming in advance of the holidays, and prepping for my talk at Magfest ate up WAY more hours than I expected. I’ve got a lot of scripts prepped for 2020, though, and I’m excited to start cranking episodes out at a faster pace in the new year.

I also wanted to say thanks to all of you! Thank you for supporting this thing I make, and for helping to make it even bigger and better. I am deeply honored. <3

I’m excited as heck for what 2020 holds for New Frame Plus, and I‘m eager to get started! But first let’s all enjoy some holidays, huh? See you next year!

Happy December!

Upcoming Episodes

I've shuffled plans around slightly! The two episodes I'm currently working on are The Animation of Phoenix Wright and My Favorite Game Animation of 2019.

I'm aiming to have both episodes ready before the end of the year, but odds are that the Phoenix Wright episode will slip into January. Part of the reason for this is that gathering footage for it has proven time consuming haha. Getting a satisfactory number of clips of witness reactions and breakdowns will basically require recording the Phoenix Wright Trilogy in its entirety, which - even using a walkthrough - takes a while! I think it'll be a time investment worth making, though, especially for an episode so many of y'all have requested!

The other reason for the delays is that I'm also hard at work preparing for Magfest things! More details on that below.

The Next Live Q&A

Let's plan on doing the next stream on December 15th at 11AM Pacific. We had a pretty big crowd for the last one, which was a blast! I look forward to hanging out again. :D

Magfest!

So I'm planning to be at Magfest this year, and I'm currently scheduled to give a talk! The topic: The History of Final Fantasy Animation. Some of you will recognize that as the topic of a series I've been planning for the channel for years. In this panel, I'll be condensing that mega series into one hour! A speedrun, basically.

If you can make it, I'd love to see y'all there! If not, don't you worry: a much more robust version of this talk is planned for the channel. Think of this panel as a 1/20th scale model for a future full-size series to come. :D

And that's about it! I hope y'all have a great end to 2019. Let me know if you have any questions!

Vote for the next episode topic!

It's voting time!  I've got several of my own episodes cooking up at the moment (the next 12 Principles, a Monster Hunter video and my 2019 Favorites), but I also need a patron-selected topic to be thinking on!

Remember, you're allowed to vote multiple times here, so go ahead and select all the topics you're most interested in seeing an episode about. Big thanks to everyone who submitted suggestions, and I look forward to seeing which of these y'all pick!

SURVEY: Which animation should I analyze next?

It's time for another patron-suggested episode, so y'all need to help me pick another animation to analyze!

SUGGEST AN ANIMATION HERE!

As always, once everyone has had time to submit their suggestions, I'll look through them all and hand-pick the 5 suggestions which excite me most. Then y'all will get to vote on which of those candidates becomes the next episode!

As always, here are the guidelines...

1. Your suggestion needs to be a SINGLE animation!

The point of these episodes is to focus on just a single animation, so I can't accept suggestions like "The animation in Mario Sunshine" or even "Mario's animation in Mario Sunshine". Those topics are much to broad for this sort of video. But more specific suggestions like  "Mario's FLUDD Hover in Mario Sunshine" or "Peach's acting in that one Mario Sunshine cutscene"? Those are fair game!

If you have an idea for a suggestion but you're not sure if it's specific enough, feel free to post a comment below this post and we can talk about it!

2. Tell me what excites you about this particular animation!

What makes you interested in seeing that animation analyzed? Is there something particularly cool about it? The way it looks? The way it feels when you play? Or maybe you really dislike it and think it looks/feels awful? You don't have to write your own full-blown analysis or anything, but I'm curious to hear what interests you about your suggestion!

3. Include a video clip if you have one!  **NOT REQUIRED**

I'm familiar with a lot of games, but I'm sure y'all are collectively familiar with FAR more of them.  So if you just so happen to have a YouTube clip with that animation in it, that'll help to ensure that I understand which specific animation you're referring to, and also allow me a chance to give that animation a look in advance to see if anything about it catches my eye.

But this step is not required, so don't waste hours scouring YouTube for video clips!

4. Be sure to write in your Patreon user name at the end!

This is so I can know who submitted which suggestion. If I have any questions about the animation or if your suggestion gets picked, I need to know who to reach out to.

5. You CAN suggest the same animation again!

Y'all submitted some amazing video ideas last time, and narrowing that list down to just five candidates was extremely difficult. So if yours didn't get picked last time, feel free to suggest it again! If I liked your suggestion last time, chances are high that I still want to make that episode. :D

I'll give everyone a few days to submit their suggestions, then I'll start picking candidates for the final vote. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask!

Happy November!

Upcoming Episodes

The Hollow Knight episode will be going live just as soon as subtitles are in! I'm really happy with it and had a grand time working on it. :D

In the meantime, I'm beginning work on the next 12 Principles episode, Anticipation. Long-time fans will recall that - just like Timing and Squash & Stretch - this is a topic I covered once before back in this channel's predecessor series, Extra Frames. I've learned a lot since then, though, and I'm excited to improve upon what I made last time. And even more exciting is the fact that, after this one, it's on to principles I've never ever made a video about! So that'll be fun.

After that one's done, it'll be time for another patron-selected topic! I'll start taking suggestions for that one shortly after the Hollow Knight video goes live.

The Next Live Q&A

It's almost time for another Q&A stream! This time, let's plan on November 17th at 11AM Pacific. I'd like to try doing the stream on Sundays, as Saturday is usually my recording day and talking for an hour straight before recording wreaks havoc on my voice. We'll see how it goes!

Desert Bus

I'm going to be a guest at Desert Bus this year! If you aren't familiar, Desert Bus for Hope is a charity stream organized by our buddies over at Loading Ready Run. It's a delightful time and I highly recommend tuning in. I'll be there to help out this Friday and maybe a little bit of Saturday, so I may see you there!

Let me know if you have any questions!

The Next Q&A Stream!

Our first Q&A stream was a blast and only had one technical hiccup! The next one will be happening this weekend on Saturday, October 12th at 11:00AM PDT! I'll send out a CrowdCast link for the stream itself later this week. I'm very much looking forward to hanging out and chatting some more!

Upcoming Episodes

That Squash & Stretch episode took WAY too darned long to finish, but it's finally out and I'm happy with it! The next episode will be the winner of the most recent patron vote, which means a look at several animations in Hollow Knight! This should be pretty different from any of our past episodes and I'm excited to dig in.

After that, it'll be time for the next 12 Principles episode (Anticipation), and then it'll be time for another patron-selected topic!

I think that's about it! Let me know if you have any questions!

Remix Recommendations! (September 2019)

It's time for your monthly music recommendations!

We went pretty big last time, so this month I just want to highlight one artist, and he's someone I only recently discovered: Tom Jackson, a.k.a liltommyj.

This artist makes original arrangements by sampling not just the musical sounds from a particular game, but also a variety of sound effects and voice clips, lending each track a bit of unique flavor. I could just set you loose on their YouTube channel (and Patreon page) and call it a day, but let me give you a few top-notch pieces to start with...

If you support them on Patreon, you can even get mp3 downloads for everything they've made, which I highly recommend! They've been making music for a good while, but I think they've really started coming into their own over the last two years, and I'm excited to see what they've got for us next.

Enjoy the tunes! I gotta get back to work on that Squash & Stretch episode. :P

POLL: Which animation should I analyze next?

The Squash & Stretch video is coming along nicely, but after that It's time for another patron-suggested episode, so y'all need to help me pick another animation to analyze!

Patron Update! (September 2019)

Happy September!

Monthly Q&As!

The New Frame Plus Patreon has reached $1,500 per month! And that means we're going to start doing a patron-exclusive Q&A hangout stream every month, starting in September (probably on either the 13th or the 20th). To keep things manageable, I'm going to start by limiting attendance to $5+ patrons, but I may choose to expand that access down the road if it proves doable.

Thanks so much for helping the Patreon to reach this milestone!

Upcoming Episodes

I'm currently hard at work on the next episode in the 12 Principles series, this time covering Squash & Stretch. Long time fans may recall that I've made a video on this topic before, but I'm making some pretty significant alterations at the script level, and I think the results are going to be a lot stronger. I really liked what the Timing episode became once I expanded its focus to look at how the principle impacts a variety of games (rather than just deep-diving on a single example), so I'm going to continue that approach for the rest of the series, I think. I look forward to y'all seeing it!

After that one's done, it'll be time for another patron-selected topic! On that note...

The Next Topic Vote

Be thinking about what game animations you want me to analyze, because it's almost time for the next vote! I'll be opening up topic suggestions very soon. Y'all have been requesting some FANTASTIC episodes so far and I can't wait to see what wins the next vote. :D

I think that's about it! Let me know if you have any questions. And thanks again for helping the channel to reach the $1,500 goal! :)

The title is kinda self-explanatory!

Splatunes!
