Happy August!
Upcoming Episodes
Now that the Arc System Works episode is finally out, I'm working on the next patron-requested episode about climbing in Breath of the Wild. The footage is mostly gathered and the script is coming together. It's been an interesting subject to dig into! The Zelda series has such a utilitarian approach to character animation; it rarely steals the show, but it almost ALWAYS achieves its functional goals and gives the player all the clear visual feedback they need. Should make for a good video!
Once that one is finished, I'll be moving onto the next episode in the 12 Principles series, this time covering Squash & Stretch. I'm thinking that, from this point onward (unless something changes), I'll alternate between 12 Principles videos and patron requests until we've got the full series of 12 complete. That project has already had two false starts on other channels, and I'm QUITE ready to see it through. :)
Remix Recommendations
Because I was so focused on getting that darned ArcSys video done, I ended up missing last month's recommendation post. Apologies for that! I'll write up a nice chunky one for August. :D
The Next Topic Vote
I'll probably open up the floor to suggestions for the next patron-selected topic once the Breath of the Wild Climbing episode drops. That way y'all can be picking the next video while I get Squash & Stretch done. I'm hoping to pick up the pace of video releases so y'all can get more requested videos! You've been coming up with so many good ones! Actually, on that note...
Some Tips for Future Topic Requests
I thought it might help to write up a few more tips for making topic suggestions! Just some extra guidelines to help increase the chances of getting your topic selected for the patron vote:
1. Handheld game topics are less likely to get picked!
Mostly because it's near impossible for me to capture footage from a lot of them! If you're asking for something older (like a Gameboy or GBA game), I can get that footage via emulation, but anything from the Nintendo DS or 3DS is pretty much a no-go. It's a bummer, but Nintendo has just made it too darned difficult to record footage from those systems. :(
2. Specific requests are more likely to be picked than general ones!
I'll sometimes see submissions like "anything from ______" or "something from _____ series", and I appreciate that y'all are trying to give me some additional creative freedom! That said, I'm likely to pick someone else's more-specific request over these, just because the entire point of these patron-selected episodes is to talk about animations Y'ALL have picked. If I take that opportunity to pass over everyone else's requests and just do another topic I want, it kinda defeats the purpose.
3. Tightly-focused topics are more likely to get picked, too!
This is mostly just because I'm trying to be more disciplined about avoiding scope creep on these videos. If I can keep episodes manageable, I can finish them more often and give y'all even more opportunities to request topics!
But yeah, that's about it! If you have any questions, feel free to ask. And have a great month!

Happy July!
Topic Vote Results
It was a VERY close one, but I think we can safely call the vote at this point: the episode after next will be about the climbing in Breath of the Wild! Thanks for your votes and topic suggestions! This ought to be a good one.
One thing that's always interested me about animation in Zelda games is how relatively vanilla it is. It's hardly the most eye-catching or polished animation out there, but it's always effective in terms of clarity and has its own unique charm. This should be a fun to dig into!
Upcoming Episodes
But first I need to finish the episode about Arc System Works's impressive 3D anime aesthetic with Guilty Gear Xrd and Dragon Ball FighterZ. Things are coming along! The audio is recorded and footage gathered, so as soon as I can get the actual edit done, it should be ready to go.
Once that one's wrapped, I'll jump onto this Breath of the Wild episode. Then after that, it's time for another 12 Principles episode. And then most likely another patron-vote topic, so be thinking of what animations you want to suggest next time!
I hope y'all have yourselves a great month! If you have any questions about anything, feel free to ask!

It's that time again!
Y'all's latest batch of suggestions were extremely good, and choosing just five from the list was difficult as heck. We've got two returning candidates and three new ones, all of them great! We can't lose. :D
Remember, you're allowed to vote multiple times here, so go ahead and select all the topics you're most interested in seeing an episode about. Thanks a ton to all of you who submitted suggestions, and I look forward to seeing which of these y'all pick!

I hope y'all enjoyed the Dark Souls Parry/Riposte episode! I've already begun work on the next video (about Guilty Gear Xrd, Dragon Ball FighterZ and Arc System Works's 3D anime style), but AFTER that it's time for another patron-suggested episode, so y'all need to help me pick another animation to analyze!
SUGGEST AN ANIMATION HERE!
Just like last time, once everyone has had time to submit their suggestions, I'll look through them all and hand-pick the 5 suggestions which excite me most. Then y'all will get to vote on which of those candidates becomes the next episode!
Once again, here are the guidelines...
1. Your suggestion needs to be a SINGLE animation!
The point of these episodes is to focus on just a single animation, so I can't accept suggestions like "The animation in Mario Sunshine" or even "Mario's animation in Mario Sunshine". Those topics are much to broad for this sort of video. But more specific suggestions like "Mario's FLUDD Hover in Mario Sunshine" or "Peach's acting in that one Mario Sunshine cutscene"? Those are fair game!
If you have an idea for a suggestion but you're not sure if it's specific enough, feel free to post a comment below this post and we can talk about it!
2. Tell me what excites you about this particular animation!
What makes you interested in seeing that animation analyzed? Is there something particularly cool about it? The way it looks? The way it feels when you play? Or maybe you really dislike it and think it looks/feels awful? You don't have to write your own full-blown analysis or anything, but I'm curious to hear what interests you about your suggestion!
3. Include a video clip if you have one! **NOT REQUIRED**
I'm familiar with a lot of games, but I'm sure y'all are collectively familiar with FAR more of them. So if you just so happen to have a YouTube clip with that animation in it, that'll help to ensure that I understand which specific animation you're referring to, and also allow me a chance to give that animation a look in advance to see if anything about it catches my eye.
But this step is not required, so don't waste hours scouring YouTube for video clips!
4. Be sure to write in your Patreon user name at the end!
This is so I can know who submitted which suggestion. If I have any questions about the animation or if your suggestion gets picked, I need to know who to reach out to.
5. You CAN suggest the same animation again!
Y'all submitted some amazing video ideas last time, and narrowing that list down to just five candidates was extremely difficult. So if yours didn't get picked last time, feel free to suggest it again! If I liked your suggestion last time, chances are high that I still want to make that episode. :D
I'll give everyone a few days to submit their suggestions, then I'll start picking candidates for the final vote. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask!

At last! Definitely took a little longer to finish this one than I hoped, but it finally came together. Special thanks to Dennis Bingham for requesting this topic and to all of you for voting for it!
We'll definitely be doing more patron-requested episodes soon, but first it's on to Dragon Ball FighterZ and Arc System Works! I've got the script written and I am VERY excited to get to work on that one. :D

It's time for those monthly music recommendations!

Bknapp
This time I want to plug a particular artist whose music I've started using a LOT in New Frame Plus episodes. Bknapp specializes in lo-fi and hip hop beats, and he's cranked out quite a few albums at this point! A lot of these are structured to work as loops, which I'm grateful for, because I love the way they sound as background music in these videos!
♫ SNES Beats Vol. 5
https://bknapp.bandcamp.com/album/snes-beats-vol-5
This is the fifth album Bknapp has released of chill beats using SNES music samples. FIFTH.
♫ BOTW: Loops and Grooves
https://bknapp.bandcamp.com/album/botw-loops-and-grooves
This album focuses on samples pulled from Breath of the Wild, and it's awesome.
♫ Nintendo 64 Beats
https://bknapp.bandcamp.com/album/nintendo-64-beats
He also made one using N64 samples!
♫ Smash Bros Beats
https://bknapp.bandcamp.com/album/smash-bros-beats
And Smash samples! Seriously give all his stuff a listen. It's very fun!

Also, apologies for the lack of video updates recently! Some IRL stuff slowed me down a bit these past couple weeks, but I'm back to editing the Dark Souls Parry/Riposte episode and I'm getting REAL excited about it. :D

Happy June, everyone!
Upcoming Episodes
Work on upcoming episodes continues. The next episode ("Which Dark Souls Has the Best Parry/Riposte Animation?") is written, recorded and ready to edit. Getting the script and narration right took a little longer than I expected, but I think it's going to turn out really great. Thank you all for selecting such an excellent topic!
After the Dark Souls episode is done, my next project is an episode about Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Xrd and Arc System Works's amazing faux 2D anime style. I've already got the script written and I'm very excited to get to work. :D
After that, I want to do another patron vote topic! I'm thinking that I want to alternate between topics I select and patron-suggested episodes. Once the Dark Souls episode airs, I'll put up a topic suggestion poll for the next one.
Patron Episode-Suggestion Format
The "suggest an animation for analysis" format worked really well (and I plan to continue using it in the future), but this time I want to try a variant on that format: "ask a question about game animation that you want the next episode to answer". I'm curious to see what sort of different topic ideas come from it!
But whatever format we end up using most in the future, I want to give y'all lots of chances to propose topics, because you clearly have lots of great ones to suggest!
Anyway, thanks again for supporting this series! If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Now that the Timing episode is finally live, I'm overdue for this month's music recommendations!

Super Guitar Bros
This duo make acoustic guitar covers of a wide variety of game tunes. I would recommend specific tracks, but they're all great, so to save time: here are the three albums they've released so far. Pick any one of them and just preview a track or two. You really can't lose.
♫ Super Guitar Bros
https://superguitarbros.bandcamp.com/album/super-guitar-bros
Includes miscellaneous game music covers, including Castlevania, Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Sunshine tunes.
♫ nice.
https://superguitarbros.bandcamp.com/album/nice
Includes miscellaneous game music covers, including Super Mario Galaxy, Final Fantasy VII, Mega Man III and Donkey Kong Country.
♫ Ocarina of Time
https://superguitarbros.bandcamp.com/album/ocarina-of-time
Features tons of exceptional Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time covers.

Metroid Metal
Started as a project by Grant "Stemage" Henry all the way back in 2003, this band is about making prog metal arrangements of Metroid music. EXTREMELY GOOD prog metal covers. Metroid Metal has grown into a 5-person band that's released three albums and performed live across the country. If you enjoy some good metal, this is some of the best to be had in the entire game remixing scene.
♫ Varia Suite
https://metroidmetal.bandcamp.com/album/varia-suite
The first album recorded as a full band, and I'd say the best place to start listening.
♫ Expansion Pack
https://metroidmetal.bandcamp.com/album/expansion-pack
Their follow-up EP, adding six more fantastic arrangements
♫ Other Album
https://metroidmetal.bandcamp.com/album/other-album
Listen, you should really just get all of these if you like Metroid and/or metal.

I think the next episode is done! Feels good to get an episode finished in less than a month. :D
For those of you who remember this video series back when it was called Extra Frames, you may recall a mini-series of episodes I had started making about the 12 Principles of Animation. I only finished three of them back then, and - in retrospect - their format was pretty weird. So when the time came to bring everything over to this new channel, I decided that I wanted to reboot the 12 Principles series from scratch, dropping the old format and putting more focus on how that principle applies to game animation specifically. I think the resulting episode is much stronger!
We'll be doing the rest of the 12 Principles in this way, but not back-to-back. I plan to space them out a little bit so we can maintain some fun variety episode to episode. I hope you enjoy this, though! Next up: whatever animation y'all voted for in this week's poll (which looks like it's going to be Dark Souls)!

It's vote time!
A bunch of you have submitted your suggestions for the next Close-Up episode topic, and those suggestions were extremely good. Choosing just five candidates from that pool has been a challenge! Whichever animation y'all vote for, I think we're in for a good episode. If you don't see your suggestion here, or if your pick doesn't ultimately win, don't worry: you can (and should!) suggest that animation again next time! We'll be doing these a lot. :D
Now you're allowed to vote multiple times here, so go ahead and select all the topics you're most interested in seeing an episode about. I look forward to seeing what y'all pick!

The time is now! After the Timing episode is done, I'm planning to do another Close-Up episode about a single animation, and I need y'all to help me pick an animation to analyze!

Time for the monthly update! Work on new episodes continues at a good pace.
As you may have already seen, the Pokemon Battle Animation episode is complete! It's the longest episode of New Frame Plus yet, and I'm quite happy with how it turned out. The episode hasn't gone live on the channel yet (I'm planning to launch it simultaneously with another YouTube channel's Pokemon video), but if you're a patron at the $5 level or higher, you have Early Access to the episode already! I hope you enjoy it.
In the meantime, I've been working on the next NFP episode, and it's nearly done as well! The 12 Principles of Animation: TIMING is currently in the editing phase and I hope to have a WIP preview ready by tomorrow. Longtime fans may recall I once made a video on this topic for Extra Frames back in the day. If so, parts of this episode will feel familiar, but I've actually made a lot of changes at the script level. Rather than keeping my old approach of awkwardly smashing together a 12 Principles lesson with a game analysis video, I'm going to focus more on the numerous applications each the principle, talking about how the principle of Timing applies to a variety of games in different ways. I think it's going to be a MUCH more effective approach, and I'm excited to continue using it for the 12 Principles series in the future.
And after I wrap up the Timing episode, I'm thinking it's time for another close-up episode where we talk about a single animation in-depth (like the Spider-Man and Skyrim episodes), which means it's going to be time to take suggestions from you! I'll be posting a poll for $3+ patrons soon. I'm thinking of adopting a release pattern where I alternate close-up episodes with longer videos, so we'll see how that goes. More news on that soon!
And finally, in PlayFrame news, I just posted a highlight reel for 2018 this morning! It was fun going back over everything we released last year and picking out some of our most amusing moments.
PlayFrame 2018 Highlights!
But I think that's it for the moment! I'll be back with WIP previews, polls and more very soon. Until then, have a good May!

This one ended up bigger than expected!
You folks voted for this episode to come next, and now it's finally ready. This is my first crack at a retrospective format, and I like how it turned out! That said, I am definitely ready to NOT stare at Pokemon footage for a while. :P
Also, this is likely to be a VERY ADVANCED screening, because I plan to hold off on publically releasing this episode until JoCat has finished editing his own video so we can launch them simultaneously. Fortunately, I've already got the next episode written and recorded, so the gap between this episode and the next should be much shorter!
Enjoy this very early screening of the Pokemon episode!

At last, a rough cut of the next episode is complete!
It still needs a little work, of course:
- it could use another editing polish pass
- a lot of text and sprites still need animation
- some video clips may get swapped out for better ones
- it still needs an actual thumbnail
- I need to update the patron list at the end
...but we're nearly there! This episode is a little different than what I've done before, so I'm excited to see how it's received. Enjoy the preview!

HERE WE GO.

RichaadEB
Rich has been producing prog metal covers of game music for years. His most well-known work is probably...
♫ DETERMINATION
by RichaadEB & Ace Waters
https://determination-ut.bandcamp.com/album/determination
This Undertale cover album was a collaboration with Ace Waters. If you are a fan of metal OR Undertale music, this album deserves your attention.
But RichaadEB has tons of other great music out there. He posts a new music video every week on his YouTube channel, covering themes from games, movies and anime, and at this point is channel is packed with gems.
♫ “Undersea Palace (Chrono Trigger)”
by RichaadEB
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyBx70DuxvY
Chrono Trigger's soundtrack gets covered extensively, but I rarely see anyone tackle this particular track and I did NOT expect it to have such potent metal potential.
♫ “Snake Man (Mega Man 3)”
by RichaadEB
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhsTjlz2Rz8
Mega Man music was just MEANT to be turned into prog metal covers.
♫ “Life Will Change (Persona 5)”
by RichaadEB ft. Caleb Hyles
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQnU29Bxrds
When a track needs vocals, Rich will often bring in Caleb for the task. The two go well together!
♫ “BAD APPLE!! (Touhou)”
by RichaadEB ft. Christina Vee
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Xz4NV0zsbY
The Touhou remix scene is one of those branches of the community that is just sort of quietly ENORMOUS.
♫ “Wii Channel Theme”

RIP Wii Shop.
♫ “Odd Future (Boku no Hero Academia)”
by RichaadEB ft. Caleb Hyles

Richaad also ventures into anime OP themes pretty frequently if that's your jam.
But yeah, go ahead and just subscribe to RichaadEB's channel, because he posts a new video WEEKLY.
But maybe metal isn't your jam! Perhaps you're more into electronic? Some electronic tunes perhaps? Some EDM, hiphop and chill out? Allow me to introduce you to...

Daggum I love this source material so much.
♫ “Weird Autumn (Night in the Woods)”

Hello everyone! It's time for a monthly patron update.
Upcoming Episodes
I'm currently hard at work on the next episode (which y'all voted for a couple weeks back): How Has Pokemon's Battle Animation Evolved?
I'd normally hope to be editing the video itself by now, but I actually had a bit of trouble getting the script nailed down. In addition to just being a BIG topic to research, this is the first time I've made a New Frame Plus episode that is essentially a franchise retrospective. It took a few rewrites, but I think I've just about got it dialed in, and I can't wait to get started on the video itself!
Once that episode is wrapped, I plan to get started on the first installment in a new 12 Principles of Animation mini-series. After that, I'll jump to either the Dragon Ball FighterZ video or the Mario Odyssey Cap Throw topic, whichever feels right. And fortunately, most of the scripts for these episodes are already nearly finished, so the downtime between releases should be considerably shorter!
On the whole, I'm not currently satisfied with the pace of new episode releases. Thanks in part to the long production cycle on that last episode, we went two whole months without a new video, which is way longer of a gap than I would prefer. So for the next couple months, I want to try to get videos released more frequently, at least once a month. That's the goal, anyway. :)
PlayFrame
I don't know how many of you actually know about our other channel. PlayFrame is a daily Let's Play channel I run together with my wife, Carrie. I just started stumbling my way through Sekiro, but we've been playing a pretty wide variety of stuff over there. Kingdom Hearts, Dream Daddy, Night in the Woods, Stardew Valley, Demon's Souls... We've been having a great time with it. If you're interested in some more casual content from us, go give it a look!
http://www.youtube.com/playframeplus
Anyway, time to get back to work on that Pokemon script! With luck, I'll have a WIP render of the next episode ready for previewing soon. Thanks everyone! Have a great April!

It's a new episode! Finally!
I hope you all enjoy this one. It's been the most time-consuming, challenging episode to make yet, but I'm quite proud of it, and I hope it proves helpful to the people who need it. It is my hope that this video will become THE internet resource for how to pursue this particular career. To make sure I did this episode right, I consulted a LOT of industry professionals, and they contributed a ton of great thoughts and additions to the script.
This episode will make its public debut at the Animation Exchange on Twitch next Tuesday. I'll be there in person to present the video and answer a few questions afterward. It's going to be a day FULL of fantastic, 100% free animation talks from tons of industry professionals, so be sure to tune in!
This episode will launch on the New Frame Plus channel sometime after that, probably later next week.
Thanks again, everyone!

The time has come for our first patron poll! I've got four topics for future New Frame Plus episodes ready to go, but it's up to y'all to decide which of those episodes comes first.
Your options include:
1. An episode about Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Xrd and the faux 2D anime aesthetic Arc System Works is becoming known for.
2. The first in a multi-part series explaining the 12 Principles of Animation and how they apply to games. Those of you who were around for the Extra Frames days will recall the precursor to this series. It'll be like that, but better!
3. A close-up examination of Mario's cap throw animation in Super Mario Odyssey.
4. An episode about the animation of Pokemon battles, examining the entire history of the core series and talking about how the animation of Pokemon trainer battles has evolved from Gen 1 to today.
This poll will close on Sunday at 9AM PST, so cast your votes now! And don't worry if your favorite pick doesn't win. All of these will probably happen eventually. :P

Hello patrons! If you're seeing this, then you must be a patron at the $8 level or higher. And let me just say: thank you so much for your support!
This right here is a near-finished episode that I've been hammering away at for months. It is the longest New Frame Plus episode yet and has BY FAR been the most challenging edit.
Note that this is NOT necessarily the final render! And the end slate links aren't properly set up or anything. If I (or you) catch any lingering errors, those will be fixed for the official upload version.
Also, please keep this link private! Everyone else will get to see the final release version soon enough.
I hope you enjoy the preview!

We've hit another goal! And that means y'all have unlocked the first patron feed upgrade: remix sharing!
I have been a long-time follower of the video game music remixing community. They produce a ton of great music every month, much of it freely available. And I don't think a lot of their work gets nearly the amount of attention it deserves, so every now and then, I'd like to do a small write-up here sharing links to some of the best game music covers out there.
And since this is the very first of these remix posts, let's go big and post link to every remix I've featured in a New Frame Plus video so far!
HERE WE GO.

Ocarina of Time is another game soundtrack you will hear covered A LOT. And can you blame them? I love the creativity of this arrangement, though. I'm always a fan of artists who take the source material and really make it their own.
♪ “Flash the Funk”
by Gecko Yamori
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXOi8pv1ALI
This track emerged from a competition in the OverClocked ReMix forums where a bunch of remixers claimed a robot master and "battled" tournament-style by going head-to-head with each other and making remixes featuring the melody of both their own robot's theme AND their opponent's. So this one is Gecko Yamori as Flash Man taking on whomever had claimed Ground Man (forgive me, it was a decade ago). The concept was VERY GOOD. I wish I could direct you to a more official link, but this track's become hard to find for some reason.

Welcome, new patrons! Thanks again for choosing to support the channel. Since the Patreon has finally launched, let's kick things off by talking about what's coming up in the immediate future.
The Next Episode
To start, for the last two months, I've been working on the next episode of New Frame Plus. It's a BEEFY one, and easily the most challenging edit I've experienced with this series so far, but I'm really happy with how it's turning out. Those of you with early access to new episodes will see
it pop up in your feed very soon!

The Animation Exchange
This episode is scheduled to debut live at the Animation Exchange on March 19th. The Animation Exchange is a day-long event streamed live from the Twitch offices during GDC week. It features dozens of professional animators talking shop and giving demonstrations. It's basically a day full of GDC-calibur presentations, except it's free for everyone to watch on Twitch! I'll be there in person to debut this new episode and answer a few questions. It should be fun! I'll give more details in a later post.
But if you miss the live episode debut, don't worry! It will be released on the New Frame Plus channel very soon after. :)
Future Episodes
After that, it's back to making more regular episodes! I've had three scripts just sitting there WAITING to be made into videos. These include:
- an episode about Dragon Ball FighterZ, Guilty Gear Xrd and Arc System Works's amazing faux 2D animation
- a close-up study of Mario's cap-throw animation in Mario Odyssey
- the first episode of a new mini-series about the 12 Principles of Animation (which may sound familiar to those of you who watched this show back in the Extra Frames days!)
I'm excited for all of these, but I haven't yet got a release order in mind. In fact, that might be something I have y'all vote on later!
The Final Fantasy Project
I should also mention that Other Mega Series I've vaguely alluded to before. For the last year or two, I've been wanting to do a big series on the animation in the Final Fantasy series, from the first game to the present day, using it as a sort of history lesson on the progression of video game animation over the decades. I've been slowly chipping away at this project for a long while, but it's still in the early footage-recording and script-writing stages. It's tricky finding time for this gargantuan thing in the cracks between everything else, but I'm determined to make it happen. Some day. :P
But yeah, that's everything currently in the works for New Frame Plus! Let me know if you have any questions. I'll be back with more updates (and early access previews) soon!
