Victor Vallakovich's Workshop

"Someone has taken old, mismatched furniture and created a study is this dusty, lamplit chamber. Tables are strewn with pieces of parchment, on which strange diagrams are drawn..."

So begins the description of N3t. Victor's Workroom, but Dragnacarta departed from the text in order to give us a slightly less sociopathic Victor. I'll avoid the spoilers for now, but a floor-length mirror now stands next to a table, and it's a little less boney. I'm including...

Barovian Revenant

One of the sworn Knights of the Order of the Silver Dragon, still moving centuries after they should have died. This nameless revenant is one of a few that PCs can encounter around Barovia in Curse of Strahd:ReReloaded before the endgame. Banished from the halls of Argynvostholt for disobeying their beloved commander and engaging in a doomed assault on Ravenloft, this revenant still guards bridges and chokepoints around the valley, unable to rest, always watching...

Vasilka

I'll hold back from posting any potential spoilers - The Abbot's (very) young companion Vasilka went through a number of iterations before Dragnacarta and I were both happy with the image, and I hope you enjoy our efforts.

Strahd & Bucephalus

Strahd himself, astride his Wonder Horse. In Curse of Strahd Reloaded, the PCs encounter him armored and walking his nightmare steed to see what Ludmilla is cooking up with his blood cult atop Yester HIll, and hijinks ensue.

The regalia is very loosely based on traditional Romanian equestrian parade dress, but desaturated, dreary and eroded, as Strahd would likely prefer it.

The Abbot

The Abbot can be an inscrutable character in Curse of Strahd, but I really enjoyed the chance to draw him. I took a departure as per the direction from Dragnacarta - this Abbot, youthful-looking but of indeterminate age, is more an approachable parish priest than the haughty-looking church administrator in the module. Richard Whittiers designed him wearing a tall, starched-looking cornette, the first casualty of this redesign, but I kept his sleeves. I imagine him donning the hat (and other g...

Kavan Blood-Drinker

"Long before my time, in the centuries before it came under my protection, Barovia was ruled by a different kind of darkness. His name was Kavan, warlord of the Mountain Tribes, and he swept forth from the Balinok Mountains like a raging storm to slaughter all who stood in his path. They called him Blood-Drinker, for the cursed spear he carried and his own, terrible thirst." - Strahd von Zarovich, Strahd:Reloaded

The infamous Kavan can greet the characters in CoS:Reload...

Loved doing this one, hope you enjoy.

Morgantha (as a Shadow)

As mentioned before, in Curse of Strahd Reloaded, the players have the option to confront the hags of Old Bonegrinder directly, which can be messy, depending on how ambitious they are. The mod’s author, Dragnacarta, has mentioned that the younger members of the coven like giant beasts, but Morgantha, as matron, likes things a little simpler - robing herself in shadow, with skin like pitch and eyes like vacuous pits. As a fey-turned-fiend, maybe it reminds her of “home”, or maybe she’...

Week 22 - To-Do List

Here are the subjects that are next in the docket. I’m prioritizing these as best I can by 1) their order of appearance in Curse of Strahd: Reloaded and 2) if they are already represented in the module‘s illustrations. So, not in order:

  • Morgantha (as a Shadow)

  • Ludmilla Vilisevic, vampire bride

  • Bridge Revenant

  • Kavan, restless spirit

  • BONUS: a watercolor of Strahd! Stay tuned…

Offalia Wormwiggle (as an Elephant)

In Curse of Strahd Reloaded, the players have the option to confront the hags of Old Bonegrinder directly, which can result in... interesting developments. Dragnacarta has written that the hags are fond of crushing their foes as giant animals, and Offalia's favorites are elephants. But what if Offalia's never had first-hand knowledge of an elephant? What then?

Ireena Kolyana

Traditionally, Western vampire stories invariably have their female victims (Lucy Westenra and Mina Harker come to mind) and Ireena was initially created to be a Dungeons and Dragons version of this trope. Regardless of how she starts out in your game (or if she's a player character) I've portrayed her here in way that suggests she's more than capable of taking care of herself. Nobles comes equipped with a breastplate and a rapier, but I've given her a little more Barovian flavor in her outfi...

Weekly Drawing #1 - What's your Pleasure?

I wanted to start a weekly poll so that paid members, DMs, and anyone else who'd like a say can voice their needs. What visuals do you think your CoS game needs? Victor's workshop? The interior of the topmost level of van Richten's tower? Exethanter? Glamourous vampire dinnerwear? See if someone has posted something you'd love to see, and vote on it (feel free to change your mind). I'll put it on the docket for the following week.

Ismark Kolyanovich

Ismark "The Lesser", harnessed in splint mail (brigantine) and ready to accompany your PCs throughout his troubled village, and perhaps beyond. My group has a soft spot for this troubled young noble, hopefully he sorts out the mess his sister is in.

Bella Sunbane (as a Crocodile)

In Curse of Strahd Reloaded, the players have the option to confront the hags of Old Bonegrinder directly, which can result in... messy consequences. As Dragnacarta has written, the night hags are fond of transforming into monstrous animals when they defend themselves, but has Bella ever seen a crocodile, or Offalia an elephant? Here's Bella's closest approximation.

UPDATE! I'm enclosing simple VTT tokens in all my updates from now on, and intend to retroactively add them to my previous...

Bonus Art #7 - Sketch Updates

Been kind of quiet around here as work ramps up around the holidays, but I want you all to know I haven't been idle. Here are some sketches of upcoming work for my Curse of Strahd series, which I'm intending to call "Faces in the Mist".  As in the past, the monsters are following the direction laid out in the material written by Dragnacarta in his ReReloaded version of CoS - in this case, when angered, Morgantha's two daughters transform into monstrous animals - a crocodile and an elepha...

Rose and Thorn Durst

There a lot of variations on Rosevalda and Thornboldt Durst floating around - I wanted to do one that's close to the original illustration that Richard Whittiers did for Curse of Strahd, but more clearly innocent. I left Rose her crispinettes, and am sticking with her cloak and mantle (and its decorative badge) as a sign of her elevated Barovian status and nobility. I'm thinking of giving Victor Vallakavich and Fiona Wachter their own badges, since Strahd clearly has one disp...

Old Bonegrinder Coven (WIP)

Having a lot of fun with an upcoming piece - meet Bella, Morgantha, and Offalia - the hags of the Old Bonegrinder Coven from CoS. Given that they change shape a bunch, It’s a big character design project that’s taking a little more time and thus the WIP. I’m doing my best to make sure it ticks all the boxes.

Bonus Art #6 - Leo Dilisnya, the Gallows Speaker

Happy Halloween! Enjoy a bit of bonus art, courtesy of a deep cut into Barovian lore:

Gallows speakers arise from places of mass death or sites where creatures regularly meet their doom. Over time, pain-wracked phantoms and lingering souls combine into an entity that knows death in myriad forms. Such amalgamated spirits are tormented by their collective pain, endlessly moaning disjointed final thoughts as they lash out at the living. Having known untold deaths, gall...

Arabelle

In the 5e module, she’s the intended victim of Bluto Krogarov - in Curse of Strahd:ReReLoaded, her role is altered a little, though the PCs still have to do a fair bit of detective work to find her. In both versions, she’s the subject of a massive search of Barovia by both the Vistani and dusk elves. A descendant of both Madame Eva and Strahd, she’s inherited powerful (and dangerous) powers of prophecy.

Her costume is 90% Roma, 10% fairy tale, taking the Barovian color scheme int...

Week 12: Halloween Cross-Promotion

It's spooky-time, so to celebrate, I'm going to post at least two spooky updates this week, starting tomorrow.

Also, I'm running a sale on my INPRNT storefront! My whole store is 15% off before Nov. 1, so if you're interested in seeing some of my Call of Cthulhu or Twin Peaks art on your wall, now would be a great time to purchase one. My storefront can be found here View Post

Kasimir Velikov

In Curse of Strahd: ReReloaded Kasimir is very much as he is in the original module, the leader of the dusk elves of Barovia, such as they are. A powerful mage, Kasimir's people were the victims of Strahd von Zarovich's dreams of empire and his need to subjugate all within his grasp. There is much more to the tragedy, but this drawing is my attempt to capture Kasimir's centuries of endless suffering, having damned his people by daring to thwart the wedding plans of Strahd and...

Poll: Hello! What Content Do You Need?

Hey there! Two months into my Patreon and I feel like I'm getting the hang of these scheduled releases. I'm just prepping this week's update (Wednesdays seem to be a good day to release images, so unless anyone suggests otherwise, I'll stick with that), and I wanted to ask what you would prefer to see?

Do you like the NPCs best? The interior art (I've been doing about one of these a month, but I could be convinced to shift to those)? Do you want to see more sketches or time-lapse ...

Wachterhaus Parlor and Dining Room

"Here three elegant couches surround an oval table made of black glass. All are set in front of a blazing hearth, above which hangs the portrait of a smirking nobleman sporting a broken nose and a tangle of hair graying at the temples. Several smaller portraits hang on the north wall."

"An ornate dining table stretches the length of this room, a crystal chandelier hanging above it imperiously. The silverware is tarnished, the dishes chipped, yet all are still quite elegant....

Nearly there with this one - quite a fun challenge with this interior. I’m considering making another one at night with the chandelier lit and the drapes drawn so the focus is on the “dining room”. What do you think?

Bonus Art #4 - Broken Statues and Art Requests!

Hello! Hope you're doing wonderfully even when not navigating the Mists. Thought I'd reach out and point out a fun feature that patronage of my site gets you - patron Jonas submitted a request that the statue of Ismark the Great have a broken sword. Muriel Vinshaw

"A wary-looking peasant woman lurks behind the tallest stone, a rusty lantern clutched in one hand and a dagger clutched in the other."

Muriel, in the RAW module, is a more mature wereraven that, on the behalf of the Keepers of the Feather, spies on Baba Lysaga and does her best to avoid combat. This is a younger, more pugilistic version who's more than happy to get her knuckles (and claws) bloody if it means helping the PCs out of a scrape. In my home game, she's taken a likin...
