Settings are more than just borders and countries and names on a map. While all those things are usually required for a setting, they're really only needed as containers for culture. That term is an exceptionally broad one, because it covers a great deal of topics, from the world-shatteringly important to the seemingly trivial. Music is culture, card games are culture, how a given people remember their history is culture. Who they regard as friends and enemies, how they thin...

First things first: there's no such thing as an original story.
What do I mean by that? Simple: all stories spring from the minds of their creators, but the thoughts and concepts which a creator assembles into a concept for a story, or a character, or a plot twist, have to come from somewhere. Maybe they were inspired by something similar in another story. Maybe they got the idea from a historical anecdote, or a piece of trivia they remembered, or a set of genre conventions. Maybe the s...

Okay, so this one got a bit out of hand,
Instead of setting up a single-part outline for Kian's intentions towards the Unified Kingdom, this spun out into a multi-installment thing, with a lot more detail (and insight on the Kian ambassador's way of thinking) than I'd originally planned.
I hope you guys don't mind.

One of the most important parts of writing for an audience is soliciting and responding to feedback. While your own opinion of your story is obviously important, never forget that if you're writing for other people, that their ability to engage with your writing is what determines a story's quality. Soliciting feedback is what allows you to understand what works and what doesn't, what can be improved and what can be expanded on. Effectively responding to feedback is a sure way to improve your...

Welcome to the first installment of A Creator's Guide to Writing and Worldbuilding, a third column I've started to address questions regarding the craft of what I do.
Before we start, a disclaimer: there is no one perfect way to write or worldbuild. All I can really do is offer my own advice on how I write and worldbuild. So don't take this as anything more than one writer's opinion on how to do things.
BUILDING CHARACTER
