What is a chord?

I've been traveling recently, so it's been hard to pump out the youtube hits, but this video was fun to cobble together. I ramble about chords and stuff for a little while.

Also, the TEDx talk that I gave isn't out yet, sorry to say, but you guys will be the first to know when it goes live on the TEDx channel!

Whiplash (as reviewed by a jazz musician)

Hey guys,

I spent a while on this one! As you can tell, it's almost 30 minutes long, and required a lot of time editing and shooting and everything. I liked the movie, but jazz culture wasn't really represented super well. Narratively, that was important, I recognize that fact. However, it is the only representation of "elite" jazz culture in popular media, and I thought it was important to at least go over some of the things that it does right, and does wrong!

I'm going to take a break ...

This is a short...tone poem? Essay song? I'm not quite sure what this format is, but I had fun experimenting with it.

Tip for Performing Complicated Music (that I learned the hard way)

Hey all,

Sorry this is late, I was playing at the Guinness Jazz Festival in Cork, Ireland over the weekend, and had very little time to shoot and edit a video. I decided to take the extra day to make sure the video was nice and punchy, so hope you enjoy.

This is the story of the time I got too high.

we don't play any music for 4 minutes and 33 seconds

This sounds like it's a troll post, but it isn't, I swear. Samuraiguitarist and I just sit there for 4 minutes and 33 seconds.

Also, I talk a lot about John Cage's 4 minutes and 33 seconds.

How to not suck at music (with Rick Beato)

Hey all,

I'm in Germany right now after a week of shooting videos at Guitcon, an event put on by Framus/Warwick for YouTubers. I got to hang out briefly with Rick Beato and shoot a quick episode of How to not suck at music, hope you enjoy!

Video Game Orchestration! w/ Charlie Rosen

Hey guys,

Charlie Rosen is a friend of mine - he's a ridiculously talented arranger/orchestrator/bandleader/bassist, etc, etc. He runs a big band called the 8-bit big band that re-interprets video game music for large ensemble. I recently played bass on a session he conducted (he normally plays bass, but I was subbing for him!) where a massive orchestra recorded all of the music to a playthrough of Super Mario Brothers.

That session, as of Friday, isn't technically out yet, but I figured...

How I made LICK PHASE

Behind the scenes video on how I put the Lick Phase together!

LICK PHASE (for electric bass)

Steve Reich's Piano Phase, but instead of for two pianos, it's for two basses. Also, it's not Piano Phase, but just me phasing the lick.

Like all joke videos of mine, it started out as a silly "what if?" but...it actually was really really hard to do, and it took a lot of amount of practice to pull off. I'm glad I did, because I think the result was something neat.

Hope you enjoy!

removed the "Car tips video"

Hello everybody,

I've taken down my latest video "3 TIPS for practicing music in your car," private, for two reasons. One, recording the video in the way I did with an SM-7B microphone in front of my face while I driving was not safe.

Two, and probably more importantly, while I still believe that the advice I was giving was indeed perfectly safe based upon anecdotal evidence, I don't have any hard proof to suggest that it is, and there were many people who were very concern...

3 TIPS for practicing music in your car!

https://youtu.be/4buvU1JwVJo

This one has a fairly “bottom of the barrel” title, but I hope I deliver content-wise! I’m on the road this week to my friend and drummer Josh Bailey’s bachelor party, so I took the time I had in the car to film a video. Hope you enjoy the format.

Apartment sessions season 2 season finale vlog!

Hey guys!

I put together a new gig vlog for the last Apartment sessions of the...season I guess? Anyway, it was a big blowout session I was invited to play on where most people were on the roof of a Brooklyn apartment...and I wasn't, haha. Still a lot of fun.

Hope you enjoy.

Practicing Ambigrams

Hey everybody!

As part of my last video (Crab Canon, check it out!), I included an Ambigram I designed that reads like my name (Adam) one way, and looks like "Lick" when flipped upside down. Doing this is fairly tricky, what you have to do is make every letter look like it's another letter when upside-down, and that can be hard. Trying to make "M" look like "L" is a pain!

This was a shorter one, but a lot of work went in to making it happen. Hope you all enjoy!

How much is music worth?

Hope you enjoy this exploration of the worth of recorded music, why it's priced the way that it is, and why visual art sells for literally hundreds of millions of dollars when you can listen to music for free!

Phew! Two big-picture video essay in two weeks, this was absolutely exhausting for me. Hope you dig it!

Answering 97 questions in 11 minutes | Q+A #51

This video is sillier than most of my recent Q+A's, so I apologize if you're looking for something meatier, but I had fun putting it together. I get asked literally upwards of 100 questions on various social media platforms on a daily basis, so the goal here was to blast through a lot of them very quickly, (as if that was going to make a dent).

Enjoy.

Why the Ed Sheeran lawsuit makes no sense

Hey Patreoners!

Latest video essay thing coming atcha about the Ed Sheeran/Marvin Gaye case. This one was fun to put together - I did a lot of research on the difference between a first inversion I chord and a IIIm chord, turns out there are a lot of opinions out there on what actually might turn out to be an important distinction. A $100,000,000 distinction

The Lost Album of John Coltrane

Hey all!

Monday's video is actually going to be released on Friday coinciding with the release of John Coltrane's lost album, Both Directions at Once.

What this means is...YOU GUYS GET TO HEAR A COUPLE EXCERPTS FROM JOHN COLTRANE'S LOST ALBUM BEFORE LITERALLY ANYBODY ELSE DOES.

Pretty neat!

This video was a sponsored one, by the way. I'm still pretty conflicted with the idea of taking on "branded content," but seeing as the product I'm hawking here is a musical one of great h...

38 minutes of Jeff Schneider and me teaching you How to Not Suck at Music

This one is a long one! Not a video essay, of course, but still...nearly 40 minutes of content. I could have broken this up into many smaller videos, but I thought some people would appreciate the long form of this one.

I'm partially reviving the "how to not suck series," only to times where I team-teach with people. I think it's a lot more fun, and other musician's perspectives add a lot more value than anything I can do on my own. This means less frequent hot to not sucks, but there'll still...
