took my own advice and gave myself time to find inspiration and study what about those artworks was sparking something in me. I sensed a theme popping up and noticed myself gravitating toward a lot of traditional artworks or digital art that was mimicking a traditional approach. I then got more specific about what in particular was drawing me to those pieces. things like color variation/contrast, visible brush strokes/texture, and messy/lively feel stood out to me as practical techniques I could try out. applying those notes helped me paint something that resonated with what was speaking to me in the artworks I chose. I love moments like these and like to celebrate when things work out or that a-ha moment hits. I'm excited to take what I practiced today and try it out in the next painting I make. it's fun to wonder what future Vicki will make! xD

if you're feeling stuck with your art, maybe a similar approach can help! gather some inspo, see if you can spot recurring themes, make note of ways you can make practical changes, and try it out! even if you don't end up with something you like, you still learned something, even if it's what you don't like. that's valuable information! next time you can try again with more information and see if you can get closer to what works. it's allllll just one big process =w=

couldn't really get into the flow with these pieces, hence the multiple attempts! when I was younger, I'd feel really frustrated that I couldn't make a piece work and would get easily discouraged. as I get older, I find it really interesting when things aren't quite connecting and I like to consider why that's the case. it can be so many different things: you're trying to do too many different things at once, the tools you're using are unfamiliar, you feel physically unwell, you're not connecting with the subject, the list goes on and on. all to say that art and making things really is about enjoying the process. even when I've been able to execute ideas well, I notice the process is often filled with unexpected pivots, backtracks, and changes and looks a little different every single time.

so, if you're working on something right now and you feel like you're butting heads, remember that it's all part of the process. maybe take a break, give yourself some time to clear the air and allow space for new ideas to come in. a small shift in perspective can make a big difference. even if nothing about the thing itself changes, maybe you'll just feel differently about it, and sometimes? that's enough.

🥇🛹🤸watching and drawing the 2024 olympics

lately, I've been watching this year's Olympics and have felt so inspired seeing athletes in their absolute element doing their thing. they've trained their bodies to perform these incredible feats of physical ability and strength and it's so cool to watch. their actions and movements are so fluid, yet precise and create such beautiful poses that demand to be sketched. it's been fun trying to capture their energy and feeling of action through drawings. it reminds me that lines are so versatile and depending on the angle or speed at which you draw them you can create drawings that feel very different. it's been a nice return to fundamentals and lots of fun witnessing what the human body is capable of.

here are the speedpaints for this month's mail rewards! I had a lot of fun working on these since I got to paint some of my favorite subject matter like water and clouds using colors I love. there's something rather therapeutic about drawing all those swirls and waves, it genuinely calms my mind lol. I feel like I get sucked into a serene, slightly hypnotic state. it's honestly fascinating how the mind and body are constantly communicating with one another and influencing how we feel. even if we aren't always aware of it, it's something that's always going on within us.

I find a lot of magic and beauty in oceans and skies, they're a great source of inspiration for the art I make. these pieces are a token of my appreciation for the natural beauty of this planet and its mysterious enduring forces.

above: I love the movement and energy of ocean waves and liked the idea of hair that moves and flows in a similar way. I painted using my favorite colors to draw out the sensation of awe and wonder I feel when I watch and listen to the ocean's song. a bright light signals the opening of a new path and the many possibilities that lay beyond it.

and this month's sticker! I wanted to continue the motif of ocean wave hair and paint something with movement and magic. the mystery of nature is a topic I keep exploring through my art as my fascination for its cycles and continual evolution grows.

(^０^)ノ꩜ .ᐟ I think the character designs from guilty gear are beyond cool. they're soo OTT and exaggerated and it makes the characters feel really dynamic and strong, perfect for a fighting game. I-No is one of my favorites! her lipsticked smirk, giant witch hat, and weaponized guitar all wrapped up in that punchy red and black make for an impactful unforgettable design. also, it was fun playing around with colors that I don't normally use. xD

[tutorial] how I draw eyes! 👁️👁️

as requested, I made a tutorial on how I like to draw eyes! this is a very basic tutorial, but also my method for drawing eyes isn't complicated. eyes are one of those things that are fun to doodle on their own. they're also quick to draw, so if you want to practice you can do a lot in just a few minutes. I hope this tutorial is useful and that, whether brushing up your skills or learning a new technique, you're able to take away something helpful~ ^.^💖

(⌒▽⌒)☆ had to pay homage to this iconic queen! this design...does anyone else remember how yuna cosplay was practically inescapable in the 2000s? eeeveryone and their mom was showing up to anime cons in this fit. and for good reason, it goes HARD. I'm half-joking when I say that this chara design raised me and fundamentally shaped my aesthetic inclinations. crazy to think this game is over 20 years old now, my how the time passes!

starting on requests for this month and had to draw the GOAT! ^_^ I love her short hair with the pink dyed ends, it's so cute! kpop D.Va, a concept I've drawn a lot over the years, means so much to me. I'm glad Overwatch finally did a kpop collab and that we got some cute designs out of it.

(speedpaint) 💜 painting with purples

y'all really like the last painting I posted, so I thought I'd share the speedpaint! I used a hard round brush to lay down the sketch and flats, gouache maxpack brushes to add dimension, and the hard round again to blend colors and paint in details.

this painting process is very intuitive/fun for me and one I've used for a long time. when I want to paint something quickly and convey a feeling this is how I like to paint. based on your responses, it seems like you guys noticed a difference too, as if the emotions were transferred through the painting. so cool! it's a good reminder for me to openly express my feelings through art instead of getting overly caught up in technical details or skill. as with all things in life, it's about finding a balance. 💖

really wanted to sit down and paint something quickly with feeling. defaulted to my fav colors and subject matter, put on some music, and just had fun with it! used a classic hard round brush (love her so much) for the majority of this painting to keep things simple and light. 🦋

tried out a bunch of different brushes for a textured look. also experimenting a lot with curves lately to create different color moods. curves are a super versatile feature and fun to play around with! I highly recommend trying it out and seeing what you can come up with. :]

as mentioned in my last post, I'm trying out quicker sketching on a more regular basis. (^人^) being a kpop fan means there's always a lot of new things I want to draw, hence the pivot. it's fun figuring out a style that is readable and well-constructed that doesn't require an overly complicated process!

these sketches are based on recent photos of Hanni and Dani from NewJeans (yes, I am in an even deeper NewJeans hole compared to when I last mentioned them if you can even imagine that)! I think the styling looks so cool, Dani especially looks like a character from a fighting video game, very Millia Rage from Guilty Gear coded.

is it 2013? because I'm drawing Dangan Ronpa fanart again. I recently started watching Ashley Norton's playthrough of Dangan Ronpa and it reminded me of how much I used to love that game. I drew a looot of fanart back in the day on tumblr (if you've been around since then you're an og of the ogs). had to draw my fav girl Junko again hitting a cute ✌️

generally been trying to get back into drawing quick doodles, because they're really fun and lately I have a lot of things I want to draw. so if I'm ever going to make a dent in that I'm gonna have to be ok with messier drawings. xD

[WIP] New Jeans anniversary stickers are comin' along nicely! 💖

I wanted to share an update on the stickers I'm making for New Jeans's 2nd anniversary (coming up soon on July 22!). I think they look really cute so far and I'm gonna keep working on cleaning them up. ^_^ I really love their NewJeans outfits, because I think the colors represent each of the members perfectly. plus, the concept of them as magical girls is soo cute! New Jeans has brought so much joy and inspiration into my life since they first debuted in 2022, so this is my small way of showing my appreciation. fingers crossed I can get this completed in time while balancing other projects! 화이팅!!
