Chapter 188 Emperor's Interrogation

Selene was stunned, as was I. Sure, this was technically the emperor's home, but that didn't mean he was here all that much. There was a palace in the old imperial capital, as well as back in Lithere, where my family lived. We also completely didn't expect the ruler of the country to come to us himself.

"Not at all your Majesty," I managed to squeak out after a moment.

"Good, good, I'm quite keen to see what your team has been working on. I got a few repo...

Chapter 187 Garden Talk

I made my way outside with Ulanion and his guard. I wanted a moment out of my room, and there was no point in sending him away at this point; the damage was already done. My brother had run off to who knows where, undoubtedly plotting my immanent demise by mother.

"So... mind telling me what that was all about?" he asked as we headed out into the large inner courtyard. Much of it had been changed since I was last here, now hosting a number of lovely gardens.

Chapter 186 The Worst Timing

The full debriefing, and all of the paperwork associated with it, took nearly a week.  During that time I was given access to the stone Selene had, so that I could begin the update process on my own core.  The powers that be didn't know that I'd already been through that process, so I just spent the time going through the guide updates again and making sure I had down what I needed to.

I knew that they wanted more of those gates and that I'd be on the shortlist fo...

Chapter 185 Debrief

Most of our stuff was together and several of us were more than ready to be well and off, so it took only a few moments for us to begin moving through the gate.  One by one we passed, first Dras led the way, stepping through the open portal and into the way beyond.  Behind him came the twins, followed by Glen.  Selene took a look about with a sort of sad expression before she stepped through the portal and away, leaving only myself and Ulanion.

Elevation of Mana Chapter 3 Elian

This morning we headed out to a field.  It wasn't farming as such, but rather a more open space near the village that the women, collectively as a group were going to gather.  Along a small path everyone trudged, chatting the whole way.  As we went I got to see and start to get a feel for the area around me.

The village was nestled in a valley, and either by geography or design the area around it was fairly clear.  It was hard to tell which it was, at le...

Elevation of Mana Chapter 2

It's been about a week in this new world. For a new world it could only possibly be.

There is some evidence of this, first is that everyone's ears are elongated into points. That alone, was enough for me, because there weren't elves back where I was from. As I looked about at the many, many elven women in the circle around I couldn't help but think how many people would have loved this chance.

Not everything was ideal of course. I was stuck as a baby for ...

Chapter 184 Connection Established

Selene, bless her heart, was slow as she could be. She'd managed to finally add the update to her core, consternation from the rest of our group or not, and was working on the gate now. I'd finished several days ago and gone to work on much the same project, but nobody else knew, or needed to know that just now.

It was slow going, but aided greatly by the fact that whoever had built this particular gate hadn't seen the need to hide the runes they were using. This meant that...

Elevation of Mana Chapter 1 Justin

"Justin," a voice called out to me.  I waved it away, wanting nothing more than to catch a few more minutes of sleep.

"Justin!" it repeated, insistently.

"What!?" I said as I sat up, looking around for the source of my irritation.

Beside me was Professor Keeburn, a late twenties, brunette bombshell, and my advisor.  I had hardly had time to process what was going on as I raised my voice, only to cringe.

Chapter 183 Recruitment Drive

Even after the stone was found there were a number of issues for our group. First was that nobody was sure what it did. Selene had found the thing and knew that it was trying to contact with her core, but not why. That in and of itself was a bit of a cause for alarm, the core was solid, not meant to be manipulated, not easily. I remembered myself when I'd first made it thinking that nothing could interfere with it. I was right in some sense too, it couldn't directly.

Chapter 182 Delivering the News

We worked on the most obvious materials for several hours before collectively deciding that sleep was required. While I felt that it wasn't really needed, we set up a guard rotation. I also set the golem to the same, but as nobody really trusted it, or my bad explanations on it it wasn't actually counted.

Nothing happened while we rested, but after we awoke we all rose for a basic breakfast. I munched on a sandwich spiced up with what dried meat we had left. It was the popu...

Chapter 181 Private Conversation

The ancient king sighed after setting up a small privacy barrier.

"I talked with your friend there," he said, angling his head towards the room. "While he's not happy about it he's agreed to keep my presence here quiet, and I'd like to think he even understands."

"Good, and I'm guessing..."

"I'd like the same from you," Justin said.

Justin

I walked through the halls I had so long ago built. It wasn't too often that I got up here anymore, but having lived in this place for so long there I could navigate it with my eyes closed. This had been a right mess, not even including the disaster in the basement, and all the bodies of those poor children that would have to be buried, but also the intrusion.

I had always been a bit lax on security sure, anticipating that we'd have visitors in the...

Chapter 179 Reunited Companions

Traveling with our new friend was quite a bit quicker, in that he knew his way around like the back of his hand. With a flick of his fingers a mask and hooded cloak appeared before him and we began moving. As we got back into the den of the umbral wolves he looked around in shock.

"Oh... this should have never been possible. The security systems should have prevented..." he mumbled, looking around at the carnage. "I need to check on the systems. You have friends here yes?" ...

Chapter 178 The Ancient

I turned and saw him. Standing there like it was nothing was an elf with waist length white hair. It was hard to tell his age, because while his body looked young and hale there was a tired, ancient look to his eyes. Unlike the other elves I'd seen this one had extraordinarily long ears, the points reaching just past the back of his head. I noted his aura, which poured off only lightly in a stream of gentle green bubbles.

"Nothing to say? Goodness, when meeting a king most ...

Chapter 177 The Crater

We walked down through the crater, passing vines that wound and reached across the stone. There were no stairs as such, nor a proper path, but there was ample room to see where we were going between the reaching tendrils.

This was not the cave I had first died in, at least I didn't think it was. For one it was far, far too large, the whole place was easily the size of a stadium, the ceiling barely a blur as much as the pool I now slowly walked towards. Large hulking masses ...

"It's fine." I pushed past Ulanion as I spoke, heading for the stairs. "I don't think it's a trap."

As my foot fell on the first step I heard it from behind me.

"Who are you?"

"What?" I turned to look at my companion, trying to appear innocent. "It's just a trick, something a bit hidden in the core..."

"Don't lie to me," the elf said, his eyes hardening. "I may be mostly human, but I'm still old enough to be your grea...

Chapter 175 Vengeance's End

From above came a falling spear of light and fury. Ormien landed atop the wolf, sword blazing white as he poured mana into it. They twisted and turned, but as they did the fray was quickly joined by our own lupine friend.

Now that it was bright enough the golem could see the umbral wolf, and it wasted no time getting to work. With a leap it was upon the two other combatants, jaws trying to lock upon the throat of its enemy. Within a few seconds the three combatants were rol...

Chapter 174 The Fall

On our way to the elevator we had several more quick outages of light. Luckily they were all almost immediately rectified by the facility's auto-repair function. I suspected that as things were set more and more to how they should be that that particular function was getting stronger. In the meantime though I tossed up several light balls around us, even if the lights went out again, our golem wouldn't be blind to that damn Umbral Wolf.

Frankly I suspected that the beast wa...

With a ding the door opened, and our little group spilled out into the hall.  We'd lucked out in that this floor seemed to start here, it was just us, and a little door by the side with a picture of stacked rectangles and a little person on it, no clue what that was for.

The building was quite obviously still going through some changes.  Almost as I watched fallen tiles and the like moved back into place, sealing up and going to look shiny ...

"Unknown royal-type mana signature," the golem repeated.

I looked at my companion. Ulanion was just as stunned as I was, if not more, his eyes bulging.

"Hey, Ulanion... why would you take this job if you're an elven royal?"

"I am not," he replied.

"Well, I'm not even an elf, so you must be."

Chapter 171 Power On

There were a number of problems that needed fixing. The first was that while we'd driven off the shadow-wolf for the time being who knew how long that would last. I then needed to hook back up with the rest of our crew. Finally, the massive amount of work to be done in this room alone was staggering.

We can only do what we can though, and with the problems laid out in front of me I had few options at the moment. This room seemed responsible for a massive quantity of systems...

Chapter 170 Exploring the Ruins

As we made our way down the hallway it was eerily silent. The monstrous wolf had separated us handily and it was clear that we were the easier of the two targets now.

"Do we have a battle plan if that thing shows up?" I asked Ulanion.

"Not really, any ideas?"

"Honestly? I'm still unsure on its capabilities, if we could tie that down we might be able to come up with something. Did you notice anything from our interactions so far that mig...

We walked through the open arch and right into a huge atrium.  As we looked at the various entryways and exits I couldn't help but notice the two balconies above us looking down from the dark upper reaches.  I could see six outlets, other than the one we came in, but not what was down them.

This place was huge, and in its prime I could imagine it bustling with workers.  I could almost hear the footsteps of elves long past walking to and from the various rooms...

Setting things up for Robert was simple enough. Spymaster Emil

When I was just a boy I'd had to walk these streets, alone, without family or true friends to lead me. That had been a horridly brutal life, but I'd learned things, so many things. First was to use anything that worked. What use was honor or pride to the dead after all? I'd also learned the paths and ways of the city. Certainly they'd changed since those days, old alleys had been cut off and new ones build, old tunnels that led here and ...
