Next Comic- Pencils version!

I don’t think I’m going to get this completely inked and colored before the 30th, but I felt like I needed more of an update this month, so I thought I’d try something new and upload my final pencils to give a sneak peak of what’s coming. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be another year long Halloween, I just had a busy last week and didn’t get these done in time!

So since she wasn’t in either of the two Halloween comics I asked resident maximum gwenjoyer, MattWiseuk, what he’d like to see her dress as! He picked Tifa Lockhart from FF7 and Frieren from the anime of the same name. While I was drawing those my wife said “you should dress her as Moo Deng” which gave me an idea…

Blackthorn’s hair is dyed (duh) so I like to switch up what color her bangs are, I don’t think I’ll be revisiting this color red again now that this comic is finally over with, I always felt like I was drawing a Scarlet Witch crown on her!

I got this weird ad on Twitter (ads on Twitter, going great!) and told my wife “Ha! This is what my Vanessa would stammer out after seeing Emily lose a bet!”… and she drew it before I could!

To get revenge I took one of her sketches and turned it into a sexy Goblin Girl!

I was watching “My Adventures With Superman” and there was a scene set at magic hour and the characters had bright pink shadows, I thought it looked neat and would fit my color palette so I wanted to try it.

We did it! It took almost a year and I can’t say it was worth it, but we did it! I’ll add more comments later, I’m exhausted and need to sleep. We did it everybody!

Billing paused for July

I’m getting absolutely slammed at my human job, so I’m not going to get the Halloween comic done this month and it’s so close to the end I find it insulting to just post two pannels on the 30th, when it’s like, it’s June just finish it!

A failed ‘challenge’ and a rant…

I saw an artist I follow on twitter do this challenge for his characters and thought it looked fun, but once I got started I realized how poorly planned out the template itself was and gave up.

Absolutely no shade meant to Nancy Lorenz, it takes time and effort to make and put out something like this and a lot of younger artist seem to like it, I can see how it feels like an official artist training exercise… but this thing could have used an editor, 10 or 12 “essential” expressio...

I wanted to try something new with my sketches this month, so I’m drawing some mini-comics using Wally Woods’ 22 Panels That Always Work.

And yeah, I know it’s weird they’re saying the type of panel they’re in, but it’s how the original handled it, if I bring these to finish they’ll be silent or have actual dialogue.

Week two of trying to draw something everyday! I wanted to practice drawing clothes (naked characters will look more naked if the clothed characters around them have believably layered clothes after all!) so Gwen and Blackthorn have cute little outfits. Lot of Ronnie this week!

Rough Rough!

So a HUGE problem with how I draw is I don’t “sketch”, I only draw when I have a fully formed idea for an illustration or comic and it’s really holding me back, not only because sketching is important for practice and refining skills but because sometimes I’d come home from work too tired to work on a full piece and instead… just not draw.

I’m trying to change that, so starting this month I forced myself to do at least one sketch a day after work no matter how tired I am. ...

I didn’t forget about the poll!

Preview! I was knocked out with a sinus migraine to end all sinus migraines this weekend so I didn’t have a chance to draw a bunch of gawking beach goers! But here’s what that poll was about!

And for anyone thinking “oh Emily and Blackthorn… I understand but I would have liked to see a different character for a change…”, I really liked the pairing 3rd/4th and 5th/6th lead to, so expect three versions of this.

I’m putting the finishing touches on this month’s $5 tier panels and ended up having a crowd cover these posters I thought were fun. I listen to ‘the Killers’ a lot while I’m working and thought “Miss Atomic Bomb” would be a fun title for a “Barbenhiemer” reference.

edit: darkened Emily’s freckles so they’d be a little more noticeable, gonna have to play around with this brush a little more to make them less subtle in the future. (Also added the girl’s hair shine that I forgot before, whoops!) Left both versions up for you to compare and contrast!

Hey guys, I’m gonna leave this open until the weekend but I want to know:

Since I had to take two months off this Blackthorn comic is still running into March, do you want the rest of this Halloween themed comic in March or should I shelve it until later in the year when it becomes topical again?

I’ll be pausing billing this month as three people at my human day job quit and I’m not going to be able to draw comic pages at a speed I find acceptable until new staff is trained and I can get regular days off again.

I hope to keep updating with little drawings when I can though.
