DKP 5-2 The cost of war

The rays of the morning sun were just beginning to tint the horizon as he lay lost in thought. Gersius was a man troubled by worries, not the least of which were his wives. It seemed like years ago that he set out on his mission, setting into motion an unbelievable chain of events. He hoped to find a dragon and somehow convince that dragon to aid him. With the beast at his side, he would march back to Calathen and proclaim himself dragon knight. With this new authority, he would...

HTN 3-8 The future

For hours they walked with Heather carried in the arms of the bone knight. They tread more carefully now, anxious to avoid another risky battle until Heather was recovered. The distant trees grew ever closer, and with them, the sight of the old tower. Just before the sun moved to noon, they arrived at the edge of the forest and made their way inside.

As Frank picked a path as Heather and Breanne spoke about spell power. Breanne was class that used spell...

DKP 5-1 A pawn on the board

A long red banner flapped in the breeze that passed over the city. From the heights of the palace in Calathen, he looked out over the buildings below.  The streets were crowded with people who went about their business as they always did. The feeling in the city was muted despite the proclamations, and many still supported the old king. The old king refused to kneel to the call of empire, claiming Dellain was unfit to rule such a body.

Dellain didn't care what...

The room was dimly lit by a dozen candles whose light cast dancing shadows on the walls. Their smoke drifted up in gently curling loops filling the air with their scent. The light did little to brighten the room, but Heather didn't care as she hunched over the book on the desk. She gave up on the candles long ago and used her magical sight to peer through the darkness to keep reading.

By the time she parted with Frank, the sun was in its evening position. She was s...

HTN 3-6 Growing on you.

Heather tossed and turned in her sleep as she dreamed about running from hulking green orcs. The encounter left her shaken, and she lay awake in her bed for hours. Thankfully the door could be reset and was once again firmly barred from the inside. Her bone knight stood guard on the second floor now. She no longer wanted to risk anybody smashing their way in and seeing him. He would only react if they came up the stairs giving her time to try and bluff her way out of any danger....

HTN 3-5 Unwanted visitors

Screams filled the air and echoed out the of the window slits of the tower. Heather, Quinny, and Breanne burst through the door and ran into the yard. They tripped over skeletons and each other as they tried to get away, stopping just inside the graveyard as Heather panted for breath.

“Hahaha! There were ghosts in it!” Quinny laughed.

“That wasn’t funny!” Heather yelled. “My tower is probably haunted now!”

“So what? You're a necromance...

The sun was still in its afternoon position, as Heather told Frank and Quinny what the merchants said. Breanne praised her for her quick thinking and how she turned the rumor around. Frank scratched at his head and let out a gurgled sigh but kept silent until she finished.

“So, people might be coming to look for you?” he asked.

“Some will undoubtedly come,” Breanne said. “But we have already started to counter the rumor. All we have to do is ...

Heather covered her eyes as a bright blue light bathed her in its brilliance. She squinted while walking toward it, feeling a sense of trepidation that these steps would be her last. A voice called her name as if from far away as the blue light enveloped her. She awoke with a jerk from the dream to find she was in her little room. The sun's rays filtered through the blue tiles of the stained glass window, falling on her face in a mosaic of cool tones.

The dim, flickering light of candles filled the spartan room. Heather sat on the edge of the bed, oblivious to the darkness around her. She was lost in thought as she stared at the holographic screen of the panel.

The great pizza adventure was over, and they returned to find a group of jerks in the graveyard. Heather tried to speak with them, but when they made her angry, she sent them into a trap instead. Breanne was both shocked and impressed by Heather's skill. ...

HTN 3-1 (New chapter 1 V1.2) Home again

The trip back to the graveyard seemed shorter than the trip out. Heather was in good spirits as Breanne joined them for the walk home. The elven banshee was a bit of a curiosity to Heather. Breanne was an undead that could easily masquerade as the living. She offered the Breanne a room in the tower so she could have a private space, and Breanne graciously accepted.

Frank and Quinny grumbled as they walked along carrying baskets of foodstuffs, per...

Heather news. Book 3 nearly done.

So I had a bit of a break through with the world and story of Heather. I am now well on my way to finishing book three. I made an audio log that is half and hour long to talk about it. So if you're bored you can listen to it.

4-28 The time has come

Lilly touched down carefully on a rocky ledge that overlooked a narrow gorge. She looked into the canyon below and searched its barren stone walls for any sign of the red. All that was evident to her was the lifeless rock of the mountains standing in cold silence.

“He has to be down there, someplace?” she thought.

Carefully she took back to the air and swooped into the gorge, searching the walls until she saw the cave opening. It was tucked under a...

DKP 4-27 A dragon again

Cold air blew in a cloudless sky as a sleek blue form passsed at terrible speed.  She flew for hours, finding the distant northern mountains and then pressed on over the peaks. The world became a barren landscape of gray teeth jutting out of white jaws. It was tranquil and isolated, far from the dangers of humans, and war.

All she wanted was to be away from them, the terrible vicious humans who kept bringing her harm. They had butchered, nearly killed her, and...

“They look better,” Thayle said as she gazed into Lilly’s eyes. “And the swelling is gone.”

“Why does everybody go for my eyes?” Lilly asked as Thayle pulled at her cheek.

“It is one of your few weak points,” Gersius said.

“I wasn’t in my dragon form,” Lilly argued. “My whole body was a weak point.”

Gersius stood from the bed in their private space and ran his fingers through his hair.

“I suspe...

Thayle opened her eyes to be greeted by the darkness of the tent. She lay on her back on a bed of animal skins in perfect comfort. She went to sit up and smiled to find Lilly pinning her down. Lilly lay between her legs with her head on Thayle’s stomach and her arms wrapped around her waist.

She sighed and began to stroke Lilly’s head gently as the dragon slept.

“How did I get so lucky?”

Gersius walked into the tent and smiled at the sight. &nb...

Thayle hurried to rejoin the others in the meeting tent. A sense of tension crawled through her to see the red dragons human form for the first time. By now, the woman would be changed and inside talking to the others. Thayle tried to imagine what she must look like as she passed through the doorway into the tent.

Two dozen people stood in a rough clump near the tables in the center. Most were the officers from the two orders and the infantry units. Gersius was the...

The morning light brought with it new challenges as Lilly struggled to control the aura sight. Gersius took over the task of leading the acolytes in prayer and having them practice blessings.  He spent extra time with the few who hadn't made the link yet, encouraging them to keep trying. He readdressed Lilly's condition and assured them she was fine and was busy working with Thayle this morning.

Afterward, he sat in a tense meeting with Lengwin and carefully e...

HTN 3-2 A rainy day

Heather turned the page to match the rune she was looking at with the key.  The sun had long ago set filling the room with dark corners. Candles burned nearby, casting a flickering light that did little to help. None of it mattered to Heather, who long ago cast her spell of ghostly sight. Now she read the text easily as if under a soft light.

Breanne worked with her, offering advice and helping her translate. After hours of work, she was still on the second page, try...

DKP 4-22 A beautiful truth.

The days passed quietly, making a marked change for the three. They led the camp down the road day after day, growing closer to the lands that made up the old empire. Gersius continued to insist that Lilly train with a sword and now spent every morning and night guiding her through the forms. While she was annoyed at needing to learn how to fight as a human did, she was also grateful.  The training kept her mind busy and helped distract her from a thought that plagued her m...

Lilly made her way across the camp in the early hours of the morning. She thought about the conversation she had with Mingfe and Thayle as they discussed Shadros and his fate. Mingfe was certain he was improving and showing signs of interest. She suspected that his pride wasn't what was making him so angry. According to her, Shadros improved when they flew off and left him.

Thayle tried to puzzle out why he would be better when they were gone but to no avail....

Dragon Knight question

I am going to post a short section of story. This is 100%  rough draft with NO editing.  For some reason I have this marked that I already used it, but I can't for the life of me figure out where. Would one of you be so kind as to let me know if this has appeared someplace earlier?

Normally I mark used chapters or chapter sections like this:

(Used in book 3 chapter 10)

The problem is, It isn't in book 3 chapter 10.  I checked, four times. So  now ...

They flew in silence, searching the road below for Lengwin and the marching army. None of them felt like talking about what happened, or what it might mean for the future. Gersius held Thayle firmly around the waist feeling her anger burn over the bind. To see a temple to her goddess burning affected her deeply, and she was not ready to discuss it. When the lines of marching soldiers and wagons came into view, Lilly began to descend.

Thayle opened her eyes to discover the world was not how she remembered it. Around here were dark trees, and above was a clear sky full of stars. She felt warm and deeply loved as she lifted her head to discover she was in Lilly's arms. Lilly stood barefoot in the forest beside the camp cradling Thayle wrapped in a blanket.

“Lilly?” Thayle whispered. “Sweetheart, what are you doing?”

“Showing Balisha my treasure,” Lilly said softly.

Dragon knight going to be late

So, I wrote most of this chapter months ago. Yesterday I wrote the connecting section to smoothly link it to the rest of the story. I then went to copy and paste the old stuff and it was gone. I spent the next eight hours looking through hundreds of sample chapters and folders full of parts of the story for it. To my severe frustration I never found it.

This morning I discovered that at least a dozen other pre written chapters are missing.  As I started to have a breakdown I ...

Heather the Necromancer News.

I have written seven possible story arcs for Heather the Necromancer and discarded all of them. One of them I had written out to ten chapters when I decided I hated where it was going.

I have to admit I am struggling to find a direction for Heather but I think I might finally have it. I wrote a chapter out that I really like and I see lots of potential for the future.  I am going to run it through some quick edits and go ahead and post it here in the morning. I w...

DKP 4-18 You did well

It was near midday when Jessivel called a halt to the column in a small forested area. Tavis was surprised when he asked him and Ayawa to scout ahead and look for this camp. He wanted them to study it and assess its strength. They agreed and slipped away, happy to be doing the kind of work they enjoyed.

The camp wasn't too far ahead, and in less than an hour, they had all the information they needed. They returned to the column hidden in the trees with looks of reg...

Jessivel followed a soldier who met him at the door through the farmhouse to a large room near the back. Here stood a desk, some chairs, and a few tables. Two men sat at one of the tables writing letters while two more men leaned over the desk at one another.

One was a barrel-chested man in a blue coat with a golden sash over his right shoulder. He had a dark beard that ringed his face and hung down but in an inch. The other was a man with short blond hair in the s...

“This is a bad idea,” Tavis said as the column marched over the hill, revealing a sight they couldn't believe. Below them was a farm with several large paddocks for animals. A wooden palisade wall enclosed one of the paddocks. It extended around a nearby barn and a small shed providing the only shelter inside the enclosure. Milling around inside this wall was well over a hundred individuals who looked thoroughly miserable.

The morning air was cold as Ayawa led Gedris through the forms for the fifth time. Tavis watched from the side as the corrections went on, and Ayawa patiently continued. Around him was a camp that looked mismatched and scattered. His group was now made up of priests of Astikar, Priestesses of Ulustrah, men hunting for missing wives, and southern warriors staying for reasons of their own. The camp of the men of Astikar stood to the side because none of the others trusted them. &n...
