Wood You Believe We're At It Again? Part 4 - AD FREE

Finally, the painting is cleaned, filled in and retouched.  But this one requires a frame as well which also requires a bit of creativity...

Wood You Believe We're At It Again? Part 3 - AD FREE

Here it is, part 3.. this is the one that was nerve wracking and really stretched Kitt and I to be creative and problem solve.

Wood You Believe We're At It Again Part 2 AD FREE

It takes a special project to tempt a conservator or craftsperson back into the uncomfortable space of not knowing exactly how to resolve a problem, of needing to stretch themselves beyond comfort, in a word; to grow.  But here we are, diving head first into another quagmire full of hope and optimism.

An Update, and a bit of an overshare ;)

Where oh where has Julian been lately... or actually, for the past like 6 months.

Been a bit quieter on YouTube, not many Patreon updates and kinda falling off Instagram...  Is everything ok?

Believe it or not, despite the swirling rumors, I do actually have an existence outside of my studio, one that sometimes gets a bit complicated and messy.

The past 6 or so months have been a whirlwind and filled with all the amazing, surprising, uplifting, devastating, awful ...

Out of the Darkness - AD FREE

A painting that can barely be seen, a figure peering out, and a few unique issues with which to contend.  On this the spookiest day of the year, it only seems fitting that the artwork too should be coming out of the darkness.

Pardon my voice being a bit raspy, tis the season of shrieks and screams after all!

A bit delayed but here it is!

Beauty and Braun Part 2 AD FREE

A beautiful and composed dancer, delicately painted by a skilled artist.  A picture of poise, yet behind the canvas lies another story.  One that speaks to the duality of the sitter and the painting writ large.

Apologies about the ad being included- I’ve made the edit and the correct version should show up in a bit. Also, I can’t spell and “Brawn” is what I meant instead of “Braun” 🤷‍♂️ it’s been a rough few weeks!

The Conservator, The Apprentice, And The Problem - Epilogue

Whoa boy, this is a big one!  Clocking in at about an hour, I'm joined by Kitt as we discuss the painting, project, clients, and of course spend a bit talking to Kitt about her path to conservation and experience thus far.

What The Flock?

After over 2 decades of doing this work, one would think that I've seen enough to no longer be surprised.  Alas, that's not the case as more often than not I come across old work that just begs the question; WTF.

Conservator, apprentice, problem epilogue

Hello everyone, particularly those who are new and looking for the epilogue video for the 4-part series…

Kitt and I just filmed it today and now it’s off to editing! There were some really, really great questions and we had a lot of fun answering them and chatting. We filmed for over an hour so there’s a lot to work with!

I’m hoping to have it completed within a week, we’ll see how much of myself I can take 😜

The Conservator, The Apprentice, and The Problem

The arrival of a large, complicated and possibly important painting to the studio was a perfect opportunity to introduce a young conservation apprentice to the highs and lows of working with problematic paintings.

Here we go, finally getting to see what the painting actually looks like and bringing Kitt into the most perilous process in conservation: cleaning.

The Perils of Painting on Panel - Epilogue

The questions answered:

Why only treat one half of the panel?

Why don’t museums do this?  Do they?

What’s the difference between hide glue and rabbit skin glue?

Why don’t you wear gloves, or when you wear them, why?

Why are you so cagey with disclosing the names of materials?

Why does a painting need to be under tension?

How’s the Clampinator working out, any coming changes?

What do you think your...

Mistake? Icon Fix it

Thanks to you eagle-eyed viewers it came to my attention that during retouching of the small icon I conserved, a few characters were inadvertently covered.  I promised a followup addressing this, and here it is.  This one won't come with an epilogue- I'll roll it into the previous Icon video and yes, I'll talk about some mistakes...

The Maverick - Epilogue

Hey folks,  the epilogue for The Maverick is up.  I‘m out of town and accidentally  scheduled the post to go public on YouTube which resulted in a flurry of predictably crappy and negative comments so I disabled them. If you have any feedback just post it here.

The Perils of Painting on Panel

Since the dawn of painting people have been doing so on wood.  It's amazing material capable of phenomenal feats.  A material however, not without a unique suite of pitfalls.

No, the puns will never get old and no they will never stop ;p

Diminutive but not without big problems, this Greek icon promises great things but the path to redemption won't come without a bit of effort.

Just a wee delay

Hey Folks,

I’m headed out of town for work and as such the epilogue videos for Fowl Sutuation and The Maverick will probably be a bit delayed. I’ll get them out as soon as a I can. Thanks!!

The Maverick

We're always taught to be different, to go against the current and define our own path.  This, by and large is sage advice but not without complexity. Blazing a new trail or being a maverick as it were, is exciting but can also lead to unexpected consequences for which the solution lies in, well, being a maverick as well.

BFAR Artist Brushes?

Hey gang,

Since I've trusted you to name the tools I build, and have mini-therapy sessions with you, I figured you might be interested in helping me make a decision.

I've been approached by a brush manufacturer who is interested in producing a limited line of BFAR artist brushes.  They sent me some student grade samples and after destroying them I wasn't all that impressed but their premium line is significantly nicer and definitely interesting.

I'm conflicted; on...

A Rather Fowl Situation

Sometimes when a painting arrives one must simply pause and marvel at the damage, for when it's this extensive, it's pretty impressive.  Suffice it to say, all hope is not lost and this painting situation will be transformed from Fowl to Pheasant.

Secrets, Sins, And Salvation

Like many projects, upon first glance the work here seemed wrote and well within what was to be expected.  Yet as the work was executed, secrets started to reveal sins and presented challenges on the road to salvation.
