Advanced Severe Weather Seminar - Silly Sneak Peek

My commute to Chicago was a little goofy, but the seminar was cooler than the other side of the pillow.  I met a ton of people including several Patrons and was nerding out non-stop.  I'll likely post the entire talk for you guys somewhere, but for now, here's some of the goofiness.

TOMORROW I'll be meeting up with auto mechanic Scotty Kilmer to shoot a video about the Wind Breaker.  Should be fun and informative. More soon.

SONG of the MONTH "Talk To Me (Lonesome Heart)

Here's our darkened cover of an old country standard.  This song was first recorded at the historic Sugarhill Studios in 1959.  We recorded our version at Sugarhill Studios for their 50 year anniversary album.  A few other artists you might have heard of also recorded at the "House of Hits" /  Sugarhill... The Big Bopper, Lyle Lovett, Lightning Hopkins, George Jones, the and some little unknown quartet called Destiny's Child.

It might be fun to listen to the G...

College of DuPage - March 16, 2019 ***REGISTRATION CLOSED***

Hello Gang!

I have a pretty good excuse for being absent on Patreon the last week or so.  I've bitten off a lot and I'm chewing like crazy to get it all down.

EXCITING STUFF AROUND THE BEND...

First, I'll be giving a lecture at the College of DuPage (Chicago IL) March 16th. *(REGISTRATION CLOSED)*  I've got the floor for 55 minutes and prepping for this lecture is consuming my hours like a dung beetle on a banana.  With their permission I'm going to try ...

Change of Plans... CHASING TODAY.

Potential energy appears to be increasing to 1500 j/kg. This was the missing ingredient that previously had me on the sidelines. I’m currently in Shreveport LA heading northeast. (Target area in black).

WORST CASE CHASE SITUATION Today... fast moving misty storms through trees. Potential for long tracking violent tornadoes. Odds still not good that I’ll see something interesting today, but better than sitting on my couch.

Cheers from Shreveport.

STORMS TOMORROW - TX LA AR MS etc.

Possible strong tornadoes tomorrow. Fast & Furious & messy storms firing in a crazy shear / low CAPE environment over general bad chasing terrain (trees, hills, windy roads, and trees).  In these conditions, chasing and observing a tornado is usually a bad bet... but possible.

The GFS has high supercell composites (3-5) all the way down to my turf here in Houston. But the hottest spot looks to be East AR / North MS vicinity.  Lotta miles and a lotta speeding and ...

Youtube losing its marbles... Advertisement hell

Are you guys seeing multiple advertisement breaks on any of my videos?  I'm turning them off in the platform studio, but they keep coming back... like mold in the shower... But faster... and crappier.

Apologies for dumping these glitches on you guys, but your input has been extremely helpful solving issues.

"Tornadoes of 2018" Finally uploaded... sorta.

After battling with codecs, bitrates, task bars, and what not for 1.5 weeks, I was able to get a 1080p HD version uploaded and processed by YouTube.  Would have been nice to have the 4K version accepted, but I'm throwing in the towel for now.

YOUTUBE IS WONKY right now and I suppose it makes since considering how much content is being uploaded.  I just noticed 3 lower banner commercials were automatically put on this video. Apologies for that. It looks like YouTube is ex...

PROCESSING FAILED... again

I guess the "Tornadoes of 2018" isn't ready to come out into the world yet.  I've still got 1 or 2 tricks up my sleeve to get this sucker uploaded.  Will try again tomorrow.

DEALING WITH GOOGLE SUPPORT has been comical.  I imagine 2 kids in some far away land playing a video game while "helping" me.   They take 4 minutes to respond to a yes or no question, and then they ask me questions I clearly stated in the initial briefing.  After that, they turn ...

NEW VIDEO - On My Other Youtube Channel...

I'm currently sorting through all of my storm footage from last year for  the "Best of 2018" video.  This week I've gotten through half of it.  Found these magic hour lightning scenes from June 1st near Ord Nebraska shot with a global shutter.  It was a spectacular squall with high frequency cloud-to-ground lightning strikes about every 2-3 seconds.

MY OTHER CHANNEL is for short wildlife uploads. Especially reptiles. Especially especially snakes, and for...

Brush Guards / Bull Guards / Grilles... Safe, or Cool?

I was shopping for a brush guard  / Bull guard / whatever guard for my Toyota Rav4 because it makes sense that it will protect my radiator in case of a collision with one of the many, many deer I fly by on dark country roads.  The grille guard over the headlights will certainly add protection from the giant hail stones I frequently encounter. BUT, one of these guards could tamper with the sensor system designed to deploy your airbags.

As someone who has experienced the ...

Free High res Photo

One of my most memorable days, June 17th 2014.  This was the first of many tornadoes I would witness.  The slow cell motion and good road network enabled me to stop and stare at this tornado and several others including the Coleridge NE grinder (Next little town to the south).  You've seen the videos... What a day!

Free Song of the Month - The "Road Tune"

Hard to believe I wrote this song over 20 years ago.  It's about leaving it all behind and driving into the desert.  In my case, in a gray primered 1968 Mustang.  This photo was taken about the same time of Pandale dirt road along the Pecos River... My favorite road on the planet.

IN THE CHAMBER IN 2019

Happy New Year Gang!

Back home in Texas shaking off one month of jungles, beaches, venomous snakes, venomous fish, and more delicious spicy food then I thought was processable by human stomachs.  This trip was extremely successful for me... 17 different species of snakes and all top 6 of the worlds most venomous ocean vertebrates.  We should get at least 2 epic videos from all the footage. Above i'm swimming with a banded sea krait. One of the most venomous snakes in the world...

SNAKE HEAVEN

I feel like I’m 6 years old on Christmas searching for snakes here in Thailand. So far, 13 different species have been photo and video documented. The highlights have been two little 7.5 foot reticulated pythons, one flying snake, and a bright green tree viper. We definitely have enough footage for a very interesting video. No cobras yet, but still an extremely successful trip.

I’ll post some more pics in this thread. Hope you guys are staying warm.

JUNGLE LOVE

First two days in Thailand and we've found and photographed 15 snakes, 9 different species, and 6 species I haven't seen before in the wild.  The highlight so far was this 7 1/2 foot reticulated python.

MY FIRST MISTAKE was putting a banded kukri snake in a pillow case with several other small snakes.  The kukri is named ofter the Indian knife due to the shape of its slicing fangs. Long story short, things didn't end well for the cute little slug eating snake he was with, RIP. ...

FREE 2019 STORM CALENDAR - Poster File

This month, Patrons are getting a free 16x24 poster file for Christmas.  But you gotta print it out.

IF YOU NEED A PROFESSIONAL QUALITY PRINTER and live in America, I highly recommend mpix.com. They're good, fast and cheap.  16x24's cost $23.93.  If that's more than you want to spend, you can shrink it down to an 12x18 for $13.32.  They'll ship it to your doorstep in about a week.  If that's more than you want to spend, some local printers will likely print an 11...

TOMORROW'S STORMS

Storm Prediction Center currently issuing an enhanced risk for storms tomorrow in the OK-Arklatex.  I'm purposely ignoring the set up specifics as I'm departing for Thailand tonight.

KING COBRAS?

I'll be traveling with a hardcore adventurer photographer / YouTuber named Jonathan Stewart and our objective is to find a wild king cobra (though I'd be happy with a monocled or spitting cobra).  It's a long shot, but really, the cobra quest is a catalyst to other unknown advent...

DIXIE ALLEY STORM EVENT - Monday Nov. 5th

I'm currently not chasing tomorrow, but will be monitoring from home and discussing the event here.  Expected linear storm modes after sunset in the jungle, stack the deck against witnessing a tornado.  In this high SRH (Storm Relative Helicity) environment though, any discrete prefrontal storms that occur as well as any line embedded supercells, would have a good chance of doing something scary. If you live in the risk area, pay attention and keep us posted if you see anything.

HALLOWEEN LIGHTNING STORM 2018

Awesome view last night.  Here the camera is pointed at a tornado warned mesovortices embedded in the squall that passed through Houston last night.  This photo is a stack of two 5 second exposures and is part of a long time-lapse sequence shot with a Sony A7r2. I haven't assembled the time lapse yet, but it will be interesting to see if there are any vortices noticeable in the animation. All in all, a great Halloween!  Hope yours was good too.

HALLOWEEN TORNADO FORECAST - TX / LA

VERY COMPLICATED MESSY STORM MODE chase scenario today.  SPC issued 5 - 10% chance of a tornado (w/in 25 miles of a point) in outlined areas.  The significant tornado parameters EF2 and above are better in Louisiana later this evening.  Houston & vicinity rush hour traffic is almost impenetrable from 3:30pm - 7PM.

I THINK THE BEST BET TO WITNESS A TORNADO is in the dotted red circle.  Areas of cumulus confluence are already appearing on satellite imagery and in al...
