The marriage of story & action in Kingdom Come Deliverance

I had fun making this, but public reaction has been very "meh", so it's on the house.

Enjoy!

The quiz #8 - New video incoming!

I knew this would happen - just a short while after writing about why I don't make videos anymore, I played a new game, got an idea, and finished a script I'm happy with.

So, quiz time if you want to guess the game (although I already posted it on twitter) and if you want to guess the idea behind the video. Hint: it's not about swords.

I want to make more videos, but you should probably stop supporting me

In 2015 I took a small promotion & job relocation. I went from highly rewarding and personally fulfilling job in education, to a very similar job with a little more money but in a hostile work environment. A place where I had little impact and was constantly shit on by my new coworkers.

To fill the gap, I started making videos on youtube. I was searching to get back what I'd lost. I wanted to feel valued. I needed people to appreciate my work. To my surprise, it actually worked. You watche...

NETHACK: The dev team thinks of everything + bonus video

Here's the original video (which goes live in 24 hours, wish me luck) and here's the bonus video I promised. It's only two minutes long.

As usual, if you're not into the video this time message me here or email ryan.kinsman@gmail.com and I'll give you a refund, no hurt feelings, no questions asked.

Thanks for your support! Couldn't have made this...

NETHACK: The dev team thinks of everything

Not for public release yet, you get it early for being awesome. Kudos go to animator Brett Ruys for doing an amazing job, check out his youtube here.

I haven't made this a paid post yet, I don't want to hit you twice in September. In a few days I'll release a short bonus video, and put the patreon charge on that.

Hope you like it!

Your money back on the Skyrim video

This video was controversial. I love that. It started huge discussions on reddit. But I get that it might not be everyone's cup of tea. So if you want, contact me by email or message here, and I'll refund your money, no hurt feelings, no questions asked. I think maybe you can also set up a pause for your donations and you won't be charged for this video. Patreon charges at the end of the month.

Thanks!

SKYRIM: Freedom of character

Edit: new version with less audio errors here.

Video will go public on Monday morning, y'all get it a little bit early for being so awesome. Skyrim’s a great game I criticize far too often. This video’s about why I love it, warts and all. It seems a game with everything thrown randomly in, but everything has it’s place in moving Skyrim towards it’s ultimate goal: freedom of character.

Let me know if the sound or...

Magic Find Podcast #004 - Back on the horse

Currently working on a Skyrim video (mentioned towards the end of the podcast) while the artist works on my Nethack video. Stay tuned for those.

Quick update on new video

Sorry it's been so long, but I've sent a video over to Quackbillion aka Lunch Police aka Brett Ruys for art and animation. It's the nethack video, and there's a teaser up above.

I'm also working on what I call my "Skyrim apology & love letter" video, and there's a small possibility that after that I might even make that video about driving and dating sims just for patrons only.

Sorry to keep you waiting so long but in the coming month I should put out two videos if all goes ...

Baldur's Gate 2 - a review from a 2017 perspective

I love Baldur’s Gate 2, and that’s not just the nostalgia speaking. It’s a game I still enjoy playing - the same can’t be said for the two Bioware Dungeons & Dragons games that came immediately before and after it.

I never finished the first Baldur’s Gate, I barely even started it. From the beginning, it lacked character and characters. Its opening was such a clichéd heroes journey, and it started off with no one to latch onto.

Baldur’s Gate 2 started strong, not just wi...

Baldur Effect

The first Mass Effect starts much closer to what I talked about in my video, while later games started to break away from worldbuilding in favor of making things more convenient for the player. Let’s break it down.

1. Characters with their own motivations.

Most of the characters in Mass Effect 1 obey you much more than in Baldur’s Gate 2, but this makes sense. They signed onto your mission, and unlike the fantasy medieval wild west, that means something. W...

The quiz #7 - And now for something completely different

Happy holidays everyone! I'm off work so I've actually got time to make another video this month. Or maybe early next month. This will be another  freebie experiment, no charge to patrons.

Unreal World review

Back in the 90s I used to read gaming magazines in newsagents without buying them. Well, I say read but mostly I just looked at the pictures and the score they gave a game. If it was in those magazines back then I wouldn’t have given a second thought to Unreal World. Despite a recent graphical update the game still looks graphically terrible, even by 90s standards. But in 2016 I just can't stop playing this objectively horrible, ugly game.

The art aims for realism over style - playi...

The quiz #6

Guess the game, unless you've been stalking me on reddit and already know :)

This episode is all about one game, but it still has a theme you can guess too. I'll give you a hint, it's in a way related to something this game lacks compared to every other RPG I can think of, and why that makes this a very special snowflake indeed.

patreon refund.

Quick update

Sorry about the lack of videos recently. I binned one episode I was working on because it wasn't up to scratch, then I started a new job in April which demands more of my  time. I've also been taking a bit of a break to just relax and play games just for fun*, which I wasn't doing much of when making videos every weekend. The bad news is this dry spell might continue for a little while longer and videos may be a bit more spread out than they have been so far. The good news is I have a new i...

Feeling like Sherlock

Mild spoilers for the first of five cases in the video game Sherlock Crimes & Punishments, a game I feel is not really worth playing anyway. I'm very critical of it in this video, but it's not a bad game. Usually I try and be a bit more positive, but I wanted to highlight how some other games get investigations right by contrasting them with the standard way Sherlock does it.

This is my first attempt at using music, I'd appreciate your feedback on that. Music is hard.
