A couple of hours into this one; composition and colors are mostly solved at this point. I'm really fond of canyon shapes and might revisit this piece over the holidays. :)

The cleanup! This one started with rough colors almost immediately, with very little in the way of linework beforehand. I usually spend a half hour bashing out the composition before the painting reaches a comprehensible stage (top left). I then do a few more passes with a semi-opaque brush to soften up but darker outlines.
Lots of experimental plant shapes here! And as usual, rough parallels to give certain parts of the painting more cohesion.

Mostly the usual oil brush, with some watercolor and spatter to liven up the background. Those brushes are pure chaos and require a bit of finesse to get right.

The cleanup phase! First some substantial recoloring to give the background more warmth, then a gradual refinement of the characters, shop, stonework, and potted plants. I added a few extra details (menus, raindrops, etc.) at the very end to fill in areas of the scene that seemed a bit empty.

The early stages! Good old perspective lines floated on top of the sketch and painting layers.
For lighting, I started with flat colors from the original character reference, then used a pair of curves adjustment layers to color-match the background (shadowed) and foreground (lit) areas. The badger was a generic character and didn't require as many coloring steps.

A bit behind on posting these! September's projects were fairly complex in terms of lighting and composition, and they underwent more revision in the early stages. The cart started out with two wheels but eventually solidified into a one-wheeled contraption more in line with the original idea for the scene. :)
