Early stages - the chaotic concept sketch (with rough vanishing points) followed by a more careful exploration of values. I painted directly over the grayscale layer for this particular piece. A bit of canvas resizing helped define the houses in the background a bit more. :)

The halfway point from some recent pencil commissions. There's something lovely about pure, polished linework and I'm particularly happy with how these two turned out. :)

The finished piece. :) I tried to keep things fairly loose and simple with this one - it's practice, after all! Sometimes a little canvas flip at the end feels better for the composition.
In the (increasingly likely) event of social media sites breaking down, you can now find my art at animalshapes.ca. It's also just MUCH easier to view my past work in gallery form. ;)

More architecture! This time a cliffside house in full color. I'm fascinated by buildings that fit snugly into the landscape. I also wanted to try out a brighter palette than I normally work with.

"The Fight"
THIS was a high priority to finish this year - one of those rare, dynamic scenes that just works from the start. My usual composition rules are in play here - diagonals and parallel shapes. It was a fun challenge trying to imply volume with just a couple bits of shadow on the snow.
Looking forward to seeing it in print. :)

At last, the finished piece! I started this painting in early 2021 and set it aside until I had more confidence in painting trees and water. I've drawn a lot of raccoons since then but I think this scene is still the best representation of the world that they inhabit in my head.

A busy week! I've been focused on finishing old landscapes and starting a few new ones ahead of the holidays. This one is new - a banner for the new year and a chance to work on something wide. :)
