Going Native: Smell of the Plan (ch.23)

Fasha let out a mindless scream of rage, veins bulging in her muscular arms as she clawed at her face, losing herself in the rage and pain. She would have clawed her eyes out if I hadn’t grabbed her hands to stop her from doing it. I’ve heard Fasha scream hundreds of times in the past four years -- at the team when one of them was pissing her off, at the enemy, I’ve seen her scream in frustration, delight and just because she wanted to.

The sound of her screamin...

Power Corrupts: Small Revelations (ch.21)

This was such a bad idea, I thought, jumping off the rock when I reached the end of it. I could hear the dragon slowly moving to meet me halfway, each step it took sent vibrations running through me. I didn't even want to think about how much that thing would weigh. I didn't even want to think about how big it was. The only thing going through my mind was how I was going to kill the dragon.

"Jericho, stop-" Ryuu started, darting out in front of me but whatever she saw when she looked at...

Power Corrupts: Small Decisions (ch.20)

I returned to the Hostess of Fertility in a daze, my feet carrying me there as my mind replayed that conversation, wondering what I could have done differently. Should I have argued? Was there a point? From how she sounded, it seemed that Loki never had any intention of helping me and I doubt I could have said anything to change her mind. I guess I seriously misjudged her.

What really struck me was going back on the promise of training me. Getting my butt whipped by Ais and Tiona ...

Power Corrupts: Small Disappointments (ch.19)

A short chapter with a lot of set up.

I don’t think I’ve ever been so nervous to walk into the Guildhall before. The trip here had been absolutely nervewracking, constantly looking over my shoulder, expecting for the entire Soma familia to show up as I rounded each corner to accuse me of murder. I kept my cool, though, having learned that the easiest way to get caught was to act like you were nervous. Even if people didn’t know what you did, they would know you did...

Going Native: Smell of the Calm (ch.22)

We were put under siege after we managed to ferry down the troops. The team did a rather good job of sealing the other entrances, but I gave the order to kick down the base to the last ventilation shaft just in case there was another way in that we didn't know about. The odds were slim considering we were in the center of the planet, but there were already too many disasters for this campaign already.

"How much food and water do we have?" I asked the black and white alien. From wh...

Power Corrupts: Small Worries (ch.18)

I strode forward staring at Canoe as I approached, tossing the corpse to the side. Their lips moved, shouting something as they drew their weapons, but I didn’t hear it. I couldn’t. It was like my head was underwater, or the red mist that descended was so dense it blocked all sound. But, at the same time, my mind was perfectly clear. If anything, I was experiencing a clarity that I had never experienced before.

All because only one thought ran through my mind as I reached into...

Going Native: Smell of a Cage (ch.21)

For a moment, a deep cold numbness seeped into every limb as I stared at the spot that the fleet had been mere moments before. They were gone, only wreckage of a few ships remaining behind. We were left behind. On this planet crawling with scarabs. In the middle of Reach controlled space. With a massive fleet moving into position to take us out.

They were moving to take us out. That thought snapped me back, my mind racing to come up with a solution only to come up emp...

Power Corrupts: Small Surprises (ch.17)

“How’s the sword looking?” I asked, stepping into Welf’s workshop. The place looked about the same as the last time I saw it -- organized chaos, soot stains everywhere except for polished weapons that gleamed in the low light that his forge offered. Welf himself was the same as well with his short red hair drenched with sweat, soot stains on his face and hands and looking like he hadn’t slept in a week.

“I hammered out the edge and gave it a good sharpening,” Welf an...

Monthly prompt #2: Meet and Greet

The Vega system. The dark alley of the Galaxy. The Green Lanterns never stepped foot in the cluster of planets, though very few knew why. I certainly wasn't among that number, so I had to rely on rumors and guesses. And there were as many guesses as there were stars. As far as anyone could tell, the Green Lantern corps never once entered the Vega system. Enough so that they would turn around at the border when they were in hot pursuit of a bad guy.

It was because of t...

Going Native: Smell of War (ch.20)

“We need to find a way down,” I decided, glad to be moving on to our next goal, even if it was a timed objective. The only question was how to find an easy way down because I highly doubt that we could ask anyone for directions. I flew up, punching through a dense cloud of smoke and dust while the others followed me up slowly. Or, rather, I was moving too fast. I flew over the city, looking over at the endless skyline that made up the horizon.

Power Corrupts: Small Moments (ch.16)

"That’s right, get it all out…” I reassuringly whispered to Hestia, holding her hair back as she puked her guts up in an alleyway. Rubbing small soothing circles on her back, coaxing up another wave of vomit and unlike in anime, Hestia sure wasn’t puking up rainbows. Grimacing, I turned to the others in the Alley, Riveria doing the same as me to Loki, who puked in unison with Hestia.

“I’m...I’m never drinking again,” Hestia moaned right before she puked again. She ...

My highschool adventure as a Sith is wrong, as expected (Stage 1.10)

It was impossible to make out what exactly was happening in the flashes of light -- the blaster rays only offering um momentarily flashes in the oppressive darkness, the fire, on the other hand, offered a consistent view at what I’m nearly positive was hell. Dune bugs swarmed up to the imperial squad, screeching as one, the sound echoing throughout the tunnels that were as pleasant as nails on a chalkboard.

For a moment, I was frozen stiff with a deep fear that turned my blood i...

My highschool adventure as a Sith is wrong, as expected (Stage 1.9)

Trust is something that must be earned, or else it cannot be called trust. If a soldier being lead into war by a commander that he did not trust, they would hesitate. If they obeyed, it was because of duty, or fear of the consequences. They wouldn’t know if the commander had lead them into their deaths or not. They would fear, and that fear would dull the senses, that fear of death would ironically cause their own deaths.

A soldier following the orders of a commande...

My highschool adventure as a Sith is wrong, as expected (Stage 1.8)

“Hey,” I whisper lamely, trying to shake Padawan awake. With JR-1 shining his flashlight in her face, I saw that her eyes butterflied open, trying to return to the land of consciousness, but not quite managing it. I shook her harder, unsure what else to do because I knew what this was. When I expended the unseen mana bar back when I first experimented with the Force, when I pushed myself to my limits, I collapsed a lot like this.

The only issue was, I didn’t know how to snap...

Going Native: Smell of Battle (ch.19)

“Planetary elite squad, assault these coordinates. All of them are high-value targets, so don’t leave anything left of them. Be sure to save some fun for the rest of us,” Queen Teach spoke in my ear as the fleet was ripped apart all around us. I saw a scrolling text on my scouter that highlighted several positions on the planet when I looked down on it. Using the coordinates to cross-reference the info I had downloaded into my scouter, I noted that most of them were factori...
