I’d assumed that wielding Azyr would be akin to Singing, that if I focused hard enough, summoned enough energy to do my bidding, I could bend its powers to my will and escape unscathed. I was wrong, and in hindsight, the reason why seemed obvious.
Wielding the Blue Wind of Magic was fundamentally a different task than Singing. Singing was something innate to me, courtesy of the perk that had practically started it all. When Singing, I was, to use a crude analogy, projecting my will ou...

Han I
Be careful, Kokuo said to him. Han conveyed his thanks, shifting his centre of gravity till he was ready to launch himself at the enemy.
Five minutes ago, he’d been sitting on a chair with a cup of tea, enjoying the peace and quiet away from Iwa and the Tsuchikage. Five minutes ago, he’d been thinking of the trinkets he’d seen in Fang’s capital, small objects he thought Roshi would have wanted. Five minutes ago, the bases Iwa had set up at t...

“Here, here, and here,” the sensor laid three pins on the map in front of them. “These are the three largest concentrations of chakra. They’ve made three bases right behind the ridges, half-way to the foot of the ridges on the other side. There’s a few more located at the very peaks. Lookouts, mostly, their chakra isn’t all too impressive. The real issue, well…”
Commander Shiro chose that moment to place two red pins a short distance behind the ridges, one on either side...

The forges burned well into the morning, a steady line of weapons made of that black metal pushed out with every passing hour. Resources were collected, checked, and re-checked, then sealed into the waiting hands of supply officers. A gong struck once. Orders were barked out in a rush, a cacophony of noise that congealed into something almost solid, rising through the air. Units fell into formation, each having memorised their orders.
A cloud of smoke curled around Baki, cigarette held ...

A/N: So, received a fair bit of feedback on the lewd, and I decided to shift it to the end of this chapter (the last before we set off for Iwa). I did some editing so it wouldn’t seem too OOC, and added some in-story justifications for why. Tell me what you think.
Chapter 3.4
“Watch your footing,”
There was an immense crash as a dune exploded outwards, violent chakra and physical matter grindi...

As stupid as it sounded, I think I had been going in completely the wrong direction in attempting to understand what I needed to do to accelerate my growth as a Maia. Originally, I’d thought of the process in much the same way as one would of bodybuilding. You put enough strain on muscle you wanted to develop till you reached hypertrophy, waited for it to heal, consumed enough protein, and repeated the process ad infinitum until it, well, paid off.
I’d been incredibly foolish to do ...

Gaara III
Even now, days after the first transformation, days after Gaara had finally had a taste of what lasting peace looked like, he couldn’t begin to wrap his head around the whole thing. It all felt like a fever dream. A week ago, Gaara couldn’t even have dreamed of a life where he and Shukaku had come to an accord, where his siblings did not fear his every motion, where screams for bloodshed did not haunt his every waking step. His father had told Temari and K...

“A Jinchūriki,” I began, drawing two circles into the sand, “Is, when realised to its fullest potential, a perfect symbiosis of human and tailed beast.” I raised my hand to stop Gaara from interrupting. The red-haired boy – well, I wouldn’t say he pouted, but I wouldn’t not say he pouted. “No, I do not think the tailed beasts would feel the same way. No one would if they were taken against their will and put into the soul of someone else.”
I took a moment to ...

Chapter 3.1
The shock of seeing the truth of my Maiar form so clearly would wear off soon, that much I knew. I was not yet strong enough, not yet completely in tune with my Maia self, that the effect of imposing my nature on others could last long. In fact, had Rasa not believed I wasn’t going to pose harm to him, it wouldn’t have worked at all.
In fact, if I had meaned to deceive him on even the slightest level, it wouldn’t have worked either. The reason wh...

Rasa I
The man before him leaned back in his seat, that infuriating smile still plastered on his face. Rasa didn’t buy the act for a second.
Baki and Gaara’s report had been thorough enough to cover the basics. A routine civilian rescue and bandit elimination mission – the latter of which was certainly the only cause for Gaara volunteering, the monster loved bloodshed like nothing else – had turned into something fantastical, almost mythical.
They ha...

“Magic,” Revelation began, gesturing at the empty field in front of him, “Is thought given form. The immaterial made real. It does not come from your mind, but your soul. When properly understood, it is capable of working miracles. That is your first test, Tim Hunter. Open your eyes to what lies beyond the veil. Reach for it with all your being. And pull.”
Tim nodded determinedly, not once questioning whether his words were true or false. Revelation was not the...
