Raycevick's Recommendations: Our Pathetic Age by DJ Shadow

Truly, I'm not recommending one album, but two albums.

The introduction is very Entroducing... Instrumentals utilizing a wide variety of samples tied together with drum machines. But the familiarity doesn't mean DJ Shadow's learned nothing in production since his 90's breakout. Our Pathetic Age has superb quality across the board with its sound-design, and instrumentation. There's certainly a lean in this record towards ambiance, but not only is it excellent, it's meant to cont...

Pandemic made a Star Wars game, that wasn't Battlefront

Before one of EA's many victims were buried, the company developed a game called The Clone Wars for Lucas Arts. The game will seem very familiar to Battlefront players, being that this was essentially Battlefront Alpha.

What are your "prized possessions"?

Master Chief.

Funny story, I used to live on an Island and due to a chaotic situation, had to many things in story, one of which included Mr. Chief. Luckily, a couple months later when Mom and I moved back into Vancouver, friends went back to the Island's storage unit and took out most of our things.

Doors... in Resident Evil

Doors... in Resident Evil, are the main reason I couldn't get into Capcom's 2002 Gamecube Remake, and I suppose, all the other pre-RE4 titles by relation. There's lots of things I appreciated about Remake. The atmosphere's intense, resources are tight, and the iconic Mansion is even more of a character than the game's cast. I could even endure the Tank Controls, as disorientating as it was when the Camera angles switched angles too rapidly. Thing is, the word rapid suggests immediacy, and the...

Raycevick's Recommendations: Half Life 2: Downfall by Marnamai

Half Life is one of the most heavily modded franchises in gaming history, topped only by DOOM in the FPS genre, a franchise that inspired Half Life. Valve's technology has been used for an endless variety of games. RTS, FPS, Puzzle, Adventure, Horror, etc. But you know what you just want sometimes?

More Half Life 2.

And that's what Downfall is.

There's no super special mechanic, vehicle, visuals, or character. It is merely Gordon Freeman on a journey in the vein of Half Life...

Randomly Mine: Reactions

Not to turn this Patreon into the Resivick channel, but something else occurred to me while playing Capcom's Haunted House. Both of its main-characters, Leon & Claire, will not only react physically to whatever's happening on screen, but vocally.

This is something I've notice becoming more and more prominent in games. Battlefield 1 has your soldiers scream when charging, bayonet at th...

Thoughts on the idea of a long take in cinema and it's implementation in gaming a la God Of War reboot? Do camera tricks like this in have a place in gaming or is it unnecessary? This is a loaded question, feel free to ignore parts of it or split into 2 sessions

I believe it absolutely has a place, but like anything in gaming creatively, it'll only show its true colors with the proper intent and execution. Recently, I watched 1917 that echoe...

Raycevick's Recommendations: The Rise of Kyoshi by F.C. Yee

Previously on Patreon, I've recommended Avatar: The Last Airbender. An All Ages cartoon with a superb story, memorable cast of characters, and fascinating world. On Television, viewers got to see where the world went in The Legend of Korra, but for Novels, readers get to see how the world used to be.

And as I've expressed to multiple friends; Netflix, who announced a Live Action Adaption of The Last Airbender, have royally cocked up. Because while they're attempting to create something ...

Next Video (And One After)

So I've Finally Played Resident Evil 2 (Remake) is written and I'm just waiting for some canker sores to hopefully heal before recording and editing. As I've got more than enough footage recorded over 2+ playthroughs, it'll hopefully be efficient. Especially as I've already got a portion of the next video written. It's an idea of been pondering over for some time, and had great fun discussing with people on various Discord Servers.

Seems to be an gaming ice breaker.

Splinter Cell: Conviction is strange for me. Mainly because, it was my first """"""""stealth"""""""" game. Conviction was made for how I was at the time, unappreciative of the genre, believing it to be nothing but watching sound meters while moving slowly through the environment.

And I imagine that's how Conviction got green lit in the first-place, after the game's original plan of depicting a ...

With the renaissance of licensed games in mind, what’s a property that you would like to see have a game tie-in?

Comics are ripe for potential, and we've gotten a couple really good ones. The Darkness, and The Wolf Among Us, to name just two. It's a cliche for those who've been following me for sometime, but a Black Lagoon game is something I'm dreamed about for years. Were I to lead, I'd develop it as my own personal Max Payne 3, because w...

Raycevick's Recommendations: Superflight by GrizzlyGames

It's been well documented that endless experiences, World of Warcraft, Destiny, Diablo, aren't my cup of tea. It's not that I can't get any enjoyment from them, I very much appreciate games like Warframe or Siege. But they're experiences I often get my fill of and then take a break, rather than compulsively starting them day by day.

However, you sometimes want an experience that's borderline therapeutic. Something you can lose yourself to, without demanding all of your senses. Something...

What I'm Currently Writing

It's not news that I write at a snails pace, but particularly this week due to complications I've already vented about on Twitter, so I won't take up more space here. Got a few pages down, and hope for the inspiration bolt to hit soon, perhaps the recent RE3 gameplay will help. Looks fun!

Hope you've enjoyed the week, and will enjoy the upcoming content.

Best wishes!

If you've played it, what are your thoughts on the latest God of War? I'm personally of the opinion that while it's story and presentation is top notch, it's actual gameplay is too linear and restrictive.

Sounds like a big-budget Sony game. Haven't played it yet, but while that style of game might not be to everybody's taste, I enjoyed things like The Last of Us, Uncharted, and Killzone. So God of War will probably earn a recommenda...

Raycevick Recommends: Senna (2010)

Previously, I've mentioned that Formula 1: Drive to Survive isn't as emotionally touching as the Producer's films. I can't speak to his Documentary on Amy Winehouse, but Senna is a film that even after multiple viewings, moves my heart. Whether you've read all of the legend's backstory, or only know Formula 1 by that mad race in Monaco, the film provides more than enough context to bring viewers up to speed.

Senna's life was a screenplay, complete with rivalries, tragedies, and emotiona...

Randomly Mine: Control (Not The Game)

I often receive comments on my Arena Shooter videos about how the video wasn't exactly Nostradamus in its predictions. Looking back on it, I probably should've labelled it the "Potential" return, but that's just semantics.

Yes, my fantasy of living an era I didn't even grow up in hadn't come to fruition, and sometimes you just gotta take the L. However, something that'll always be comfort food in text-form, is Gamespot's glorious Review of Alien: Resurrection, where the critic in questi...

Have you played Orcs Must Die? What do you think about its take on the tower defense/trap defense genre?

Years ago, yes, but very lightly and casually. Tower Defense games don't personally click with me, likely due to their connection to RTSs that themselves don't interest me most of the time. I believe Sanctum was the one I played the most.

Raycevick Recommends: Beastwars - Self-Titled

Have you ever put on a metal album, become absorbed by a spectacular introduction, and enthralled by the choir of heavy guitar tones and pounding drums... only to hear the cookie monster?

Well, Beastwars doesn't suffer from such sins.

The singer's low tone perfectly compliments the band's instrumentation. It's is an album begging to be heard on speakers rather than headphones. The sub-woofer will threaten to collapse your floor by sheer thickness of the sound, rather than ou...

The Original vs The Rewrite

Commonly, people write a first draft and proceed to iterate upon said draft. Whether it's a script, essay, or document. Personally? I understand the logic, but it's something I can't seem to follow through. I write and edit per-paragraph, and through frustration of this shockingly slow process, I'll speed up despite having a little voice in the back of my head going "this doesn't feel right."

That happened again with this most recent script.

To start, it was going to be about Need...

I've been meaning to cover Homefront: The Revolution for years now. The original's a game I actually hold lots of affection for, mainly in its Multiplayer that struck a beautiful balance between Call of Duty's infantry combat and Battlefield's large scale Warfare. It's campaign... is dated to say the least. So it's unfortunate then that The Revolution was not just exclusively PvE, but fraught with development & publi...

What is your best/most memorable co-op experience in a game?

I'll avoid listing Resident Evil 6 playthroughs, because it'd takeover this whole post. One of the most memorable for me actually, is Sven Co-op. I'm not heavily active on the game, but years ago friends and I were playing through the Half Life campaign on it, and there's a section shortly after the Dam where you once again encounter the Ichthyosaur.

So...

I might've rewritten the entire conclusion of this new-video. Good news is that because the video's shorter, it won't be nearly as much of an undertaking as previous rewrites. Bad news is, people have to wait just that bit longer for a video which won't resemble the waiting period in duration.

Apologies for the inconvenience, but I thought it best to give a heads up, especially as I've been really enjoying the Patreon's activity and regularity.

Raycevick's Recommendations: 1917

There is in-fact another movie in Theater's that I enjoyed quite a bit more than 1917 due to personal biases. Thing is, it's not a film that requires the cinema to receive the full experience. Typically why blockbuster action-films are associated with going to the Movies, is because the definition and sound can really immerse you in the world. Not to say dramas or comedies can't be enjoyed in Theater, they just don't reap the same benefits.
1917 is a Film I assume to enjoy on a repeat view...

Progress on the video's been slow but steady, and as seen, nearly completed. Honestly, I was rather eager to get this video out immediately after the last, but the last week of January wasn't one of my most enthusiastic. Then again, I'm not known for being exuberant in my videos. Whether or not I enter the final stage of editing as you're reading this, is dependent on how I handle fasting. What kind of game genres do you not have much experience with but have wanted to try out? And what are some others that you think you'll just never see eye to eye with?

I can't really think of a genre or sub-genre I haven't experienced at this point, but there's definitely some I wish I had an appreciation for. Mainly Turn-Based Combat, so I could enjoy XCOM's gameplay.

Why is today Patreon Post late? ...Because I slept in and forgot to schedule, but also because! While I do love Music, Movies, and Shows, I do understand that what I'm known for discussing most of all is games, and that when I play a really good game, I should probably recommend it, and Amid Evil is a damn good game.
