Weekly Digimon Comic: Digimon Tamers - page 24.25

I am a simple man. Sometimes, all I need is the most basic of "Oh look, this thing reminds me of that other thing!" joke to make me smile. Also, I very nearly posted this with the name "Spartacus" repeatedly misspelled. A simple man indeed.

...and now I'm also forced to wonder what Digimon would most likely be Kirk Douglas's partner.

I mean, I realize I could write the first two-thirds of that statement about ANY objectively creepy relationship, and SOMEBODY online would be making it true. But man, this one specifically. You KNOW you've known the exact breed of fangirl I'm talking about here, and may even have been unfortunate enough to see a few of the fanfics they wrote during the worst depths of their teen years.

BUT ON A LIGHTER NOTE: If you didn't see me making posts about it over last weekend, I successfully...

YOU THOUGHT I FORGOT ABOUT THESE, DIDN'T YOU? ...well, probably not, becuase that would imply that people actually READ the Suncoast comics earlier. But you know what? I said I was gonna finish the leftover pages, and I'm gonna, so here we go! I actually don't know for sure if the camera was on at that point, and wouldn't it have just been fitting if we got into a horrifying wreck and the camera...

I'm not even sure what point, if any, I was trying to make with all this. The rant just formed in my head and i made me laugh. Sill, like so many other things, it is funny how the technology in Tamers can simultaneously be so impossibly SciFi while also being so quaint.

Long-time patrons will know this one's a bit of a blast from the past, if you'll pardon the pun.

But in all seriousness, I was kind of unhappy with the end result here, because Nice's scars really get lost in the shuffle of all the other details. Under normal circumstances, I would have re-drawn this without the cape. Alas, I was in a real scramble to get this week's comic's done before Animazement, and there just wasn't time.

But speaking of which: remember that we'll be holdin...

As I sit here writing this in May 2025, I've still literally never played any form of Minecraft once in my life. Look, I'm drawing comics about a children's cartoon from twenty years ago. Do you really think I'm the kind of person who cares about being relevant?

Also, in case you missed it on the Baccano comic, there's going to be a vote starting on what the next NON-Digimon Weekly Comic will be. Go read that for more info.

And this isn't even the ONLY "Nice Likes Explosions" joke I've got in the pipeline.

Anyway, some news: There's one more regular episode of Baccano to cover after this, and while I am doing the OVAs, I don't anticipate having as much to say about those. So the next round of voting will be coming soon. BUT FIRST, Animazement is next weekend, and I'm gonna see if I can't make the gimmick of the next round of voting be "it's all shows I picked up at the con." So keep an eye on m...

I use every part of the buffalo, NOTHING goes to waste. (Especially since I've got a convention trip coming up and am trying to coordinate things so that I making these comics won't get in the way of a fresh batch of Conventional Wisdom material)

But seriously, I never get tired of weird signs in anime. NEVER.

For the record, I actually did check. While there IS a Baccano game for the Nindendo DS, it appears to just be a visual novel, not a full-on RPG. Which is a same, 'cos I'd play this.

Well, okay, it looks more like a Flamin' Hot Cheet-EGG in the actual episode, but that would probably be pushing the gag a little bit too far.

Seriously, though, what was that thing MegaloGrowlmon had dropped on him actually supposed to BE, aside from a flashy texture that would visually stimulate the viewer without actually taking long to draw? (What, you think I don't recognize a shortcut when I see it? Have you SEEN how lazy my comics are?)

I mean, the more you think about it, the more horrible, horrible sense it actually makes.

Also... I've never offered Evangelion up as an option for weekly comics, have I? I dunno if I'm brave enough...

NEVER STOP TELLING THE STORIES. MAKE SURE FUTURE GENERATIONS GROW UP KNOWING WHAT HAMSTEAK DID TO US.

No, but seriously: I can't think of a time I've ever seen a Baccano cosplayer that wasn't doing Isaac and Miria's costume from the intro. Of course, that's also because half the cast would be have "costumes" that are just "guys in suits," so I could well have walked past a whole gaggle of them and not noticed.

I mean, if I told you there was a Digimon who was a big fanged turtle who breathed fire and could fly around by shooting rockets out of its legs, would YOU question it? Honestly, the biggest knock against this is that Gamera might not quite be weird ENOUGH. He'd need some gnarly scars and garish facepaint lines to truly have that Digimon vibe. Now, GUIRON? Yeah, the giant knive monster with ninja stars in his head can be a Digimon right out of the box.

Also, yes. I absolutely drew ...

Granted, it also doesn't help that most people reading this comic wouldn't be able to specifically recall what John Woo looks like from memory anyway. I think most of us just instinctively imagine an ambulatory, anthropomorphic shootout when we think of John Woo. That, or accidentally thinking of Chow Yun-Fat instead.

Maybe Kazu's just overcompensation for the fact that, unless I'm forgetting something, he never actually gets a stock Card Slash sequence even after he becomes a tamer. Am I remembering that right? I mean, I know I remember Guardromon never actually digivolving after he's introduced, so I guess they wouldn't need to put that much time and money not an animation that never gets used... but on the other hand, they DID make one for Jeri...

Because, you know, it's not like I draw enough Digimon stuff as it is.

But seriously, look at any picture of Sora in Tri's art style. Doesn't she look like if Ennis used more conditioner?

I just need to crop out the bottom panel of this comic and save it as my default announcement any time something is late. Heck, this is probably the most accurate self-portrait I'll ever draw.

But seriously, while I generally like all the character stuff this episode is setting up, I do think it's funny how the immediate follow-up to all those moments of the kids being more and more serious is a shot of Takato and the guys just goofin' off. It's just a bit of tonal whiplash, ya know?<...

First off, sorry again for ANOTHER unscheduled break in the "weekly" comics. A whole bunch of side projects all piled up at once and I just kinda had to step away for a few days to avoid crashing out.

Also, for as much as I may complain that the character art in Baccano doesn't really fit comfortably with my art style, all I need to do is look at Code Geass for a moment to realize things could easily be a lot worse. So... GANGLY....

April Fools 2025 CLOSE UP

Well, this year's April Fools comic involves a LOT of really tiny text that's not actually meant to be visible. So here it all is in pristine, zoomed in quality! Actually, it's a lot more sensible and even informative than this sort of filler text usually is.

Screw the Washington Monument. Forget the Lincoln Memorial. Continue to not know Sonny Bono Park exists. The REAL important place to visit is, clearly, Johnny's Quik Stop outside of Mineral, Va. Yes, we really did specifically make a point of revisiting THAT gas station again. The one I already wrote a whole blog post about. Now, I can't claim that we went "out of our way" to do so, because...

I wonder if all the Renamon thirst started early enough for the Jeri/Leomon dynamic to be any sort of commentary on it. I mean, it's clearly already a commentary on a lot of OTHER things, but it is worth pondering.

Also, HOLY CRAP, THEY JUST ANNOUNCED A NEW DIGIMON ANIME IS COMING OUT IN OCTOBER! I suddenly have a deadline for getting the rest of these Tamers comics done!

And I want it noted for the record that I went above and beyond even looking online to check this at all. Usually, I'll just draw whatever silly picture amuses, regardless of accuracy, and blatantly ignore anybody who attempts to correct me. I was in an unusually scrupulous mood that night.

But seriously, it's astounding just how much ISN'T in this show. I had to scroll past sooooo much to even get to the part that's covered in the anime. Thank goodness I'm not on the hook to do com...

...it didn't occur to me until after this page was done that the first two panels could also be taken as a visual representation of my health over the past week. Just in case you missed it earlier, I finally caught the covid, RIGHT as I was about to start work on a new batch of Patreon comics. And that's why things got even slower than usual around here lately. Sorry. Hopefully, next week will be back to normal.

If anything, the comic is underselling it. I actually filled up an entire Geocities site, then an entire Angelfire site, and then an entire Anycities site, all because I kept filling up the site's storage space and needed to spill over onto other hosts. Do you even REMEMBER Anycities? Does anyone?

I mean, be honest: if somebody told you that Isaac and Miria actually did unintentionally cause the economic collapse of an entire nation all by themselves, would you even question it?

Yeah, okay, so this is a unique situation. If you go back and read the regular Otakon comics, you'll see that I kinda sorta... lost my convention notes for a while. I found them eventually, but in the midst of the chaos, I went ahead and drew the first Patreon comic I could remember having planned... except it was actually supposed to be the SECOND comic, and I'd totally forgot about the first one. No, seriously, look up pretty much ANY photo of Stephen Stills from after middle age hit, and it's basically ol' Dolphin here.

Now, let's see if I can start covering episode 21 next week with a comic that's NOT some kind of pop cultural crossover! I swear I actually used to be able to do those every so often!
