Pattie would make a good internet commentator.  She hates everything.

Also, SURPRISE WORLDBUILDING!  We learn more and more about the Persean Confederation that keeps getting name dropped, AND a surprise call-back to that planet where Ichabod got called in to consult an art museum! (I'm linking to the public gallery rather than the Patreon pages, because t...

The first rule I'm setting for myself regarding future madlibs is "Don't let it get longer than five or six pages" but immediately after that will be "DON'T TRY TO WRITE A WHOLE DANG SONG FROM SCRATCH."  Now, I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that I would have managed to get all these pages out in a single blast were it not for this page.  MAGFest would have ensured SOME kind of delay no matter what.  But having this wall of text be the first thing I came back to did NOT help me ...

I maintain that this is NOT a topical comic on the grounds that it's making fun of the terrible, insufferable personalities of the people DOING the complaining, not what they were complaining about.  And anyway (for the benefit of those who HAVEN'T committed my entire life's chronology to memory) , I lived in DC more than two elections ago.  People weren't even angry about the same things back then.  Which is kind of my point.

And if you think that's still a little too touchy, c...

Conventional Wisdom: Thinking About Vans

I’m hoping I’ll already have the MAGFest 2018 comics posted by the time I get this blog post finished, in which case you’ll have already heard that my actually getting into a hotel room was a bit… eventful. Between that and my overall re-evaluation of how I do conventions (which is ANOTHER blog I’m really hoping to have already finished before I post this) I’ve been thinking more and more about probably my greatest con-fantasy. Well, second-greatest, after some kind of...

Pattie is just WOWING us with her motherly demeanor, isn't she?

Also, this batch of comics is officially longer than any of the other short Far Out There stories as of this page.  Only the Jenna comic is longer... and even with how long that's been on hold, I can still guarantee this one won't come CLOSE to topping that.

I'm just gonna throw this out there: I've learned to play guitar and cello in my time, and I cannot even BEGIN to fathom the mental and physical coordination a person would need to have in order to competently play EITHER of them while singing.  I was having a good day when I could remember not to drool all over myself while playing.

OOOoooooh, gradients!  That must mean I ran out of funny faces to draw in this page!

Slightly random, but the first batch of these pages took a LOT more editing than I expected, and the reason is kind of hilarious.  I went back to drawing these comics in singe, whole-page chunks rather than drawing each panel separately like I usually do these days.  I thought that'd make things go faster, and it certainly did speed up the inking, but then I scanned the things and each one was a...

Once could argue that this is out of character for Mooney, since we saw her masterminding a scheme to sneakily get at a superweapon.  I would counter that she was being completely bamboozled by a pair of con artists and the superweapon didn't exist.  Clearly, complex thinking isn't REALLY Mooney's thing.  She prefers simple, direct things.  Like explosions.

No, seriously. People talking and funny faces.  Throw in some geeky scifi references and that's basically all I need as an artist.

Two characters, sitting around and talking, making funny faces.  This is probably the comic I was born to draw.

Another reason I got WAAAAY too into writing this batch of comics was because I really relished the chance to actually do something more with Pattie's character.  Normally, we only see her either in Layla's recollection or reacting to Eric, so having even the briefest opportunity to establish some of her interests was lots of fun.

A few little things:

1. I already know that part of the next madlib will be that THERE IS NO DIALOG.  That's, like, 75% of why I tinkered with this thing so frickin' long.

2. Brace yourself for perhaps the WORST drawn zither in the history of contemporary art.  I mean, I can barely draw instruments that I actually learned how to play, never mind one I've only seen via image search.

3. I didn't realize just how long this has truly been in the works until I tried to tag the...

Holy CRAP has this one been hanging over my head for a long time.  I went and tried to specifically word the madlib so that it'd be extra simple and easy to draw so that it'd get done more quickly... only for Seros Senric's submission to be so fascinating that I ended up writing the longest (non-Jenna-related) Patreon comic yet!  And that Submission was:

Pattie and Mooney are stuck in a room, empty except for a zither. They have an argument a...

No, seriously, it was really dangerous.  The drive from the suburbs of Atlanta to up North of Raleigh is pretty punishing if you aren't properly prepared, and... well, I was up at, like, 6am to make sure I got all my stuff out of the hotel before the elevators got all jammed up.  That is not how you prepare for a nine-hour drive.  If you've been paying attention to any of my artist commentaries over the past year or two, you know that I don't have much middle ground between "awake...

Not a whole lot to add to this one.  The park space winding through all these office buildings is still AWA's best secret spot, and a good friend of mine spotted me from all the way across the thing and made sure I knew about it.  Good times.

Well, I guess I COULD complain that I drew the line art for this page without actually looking at the background pict...

So, yeah, in case you haven't noticed, Cindy from Final Fantasy XV is one of THE female cosplays to do at the moment.  I had the weird fortune to wander into the hotel lobby right as a FFXV photoshoot was gathering, and it was genuinely unnerving to keep seeing the EXACT SAME COSTUME walk by again and again and AGAIN without realizing what was going on.  I mean, it's not as if I've never seen 2017-12-22 07:52:53 +0000 UTC View Post

This is always a bit of a paradox for me at cons.  On the one hand, I wanna get down to the con floor and put out flyers early, before the rest of the rabble has a chance to clog up the halls.  But on the other hand, heading down TOO early means the hotel staff is still cleaning up, and laying out flyers while those trashcans are still being wheeled around pretty much guarantees that any flyers will end up thrown away within 30 minutes of being put down.  So I gotta wait a LITTLE ...

Okay, a quick confession before we start: these comics have actually been finished for DAYS now, I just never had time to sit down, write the comments, and post the things.  Heck, I technically STILL don't have time, today's Far Out There is already two hours late.  But yeah, at long last, here we go!

Back when I first started going to cons, the At-Door Registration lines were always murder.  If you didn't pre-reg, you just had to write off the whole first half of the first day ...

See?  SEE?  I TOLD you I'd be able to get a second page up this week!

Chomusuke ranks right up there next to Bunny Manager from ServantxService on my list of pointless characters I like and don't care.  Completely gratuitous mascot fodder with no meaningful contribution to the story?  Sure.  Don't care, though, that's one cute cat.

And yes, I'm aware that Chomusuke is technically female. There's just something about the phrase "THIS guy" that's a lot funnier.

Seriously, I have GOT to start making it up to you guys for how crappy this year as been, update-wise.  Really, I SHOULD have done something like this immediately after the Anohana comics dragged out so long... but there kind of wasn't a second season of that show to tack on as well ("Oh no, she reincarnated and died AGAIN!") .  But seeing as how the only reason I tacked on that whole "I'm only doing the first season" disclaimer was because the request was made waaaaaaay back when seas...

A few facts:  First, I got sick AGAIN over the weekend, and this page turned out SUPER sloppy as a result.  Sadly, this is the VERY cleaned up version.

Second, this page shaped up as sort of the opposite of the second page.  It was written to be a bunch of random writer guys having a meeting, but then I realized how boring that looked and swapped them out with the mascots at the last minute.  So, sadly, there's no deeper significance to which anthropomorphized concept is sa...

Oh, anime.  Is there any other medium that's ever had as hard a time figuring out the difference between being a satire of something and just being a really extreme example of that thing?  "No, see, all these gratuitous moments of nudity are making FUN of gratuitous nudity!" and that sort of thing.

...buuuuuuuuuuut I kid Konosuba.  While I don't think it's half as clever as it believes it's being with the fanservice, the fun it has with the Fantasy/RPG tropes actually do work pr...

Far Out There: Christmas Is Looming...

Oh snap, it’s almost Christmas time! You know what THAT means! The same two dozen songs on every radio station, sentimentally manipulative commercials for two straight months, aggressively forced nostalgia wherever you turn, and SO MUCH blatant commercialized materialism! Truly, it IS the Most Wonderful Time Of The Year. I mean, I obviously must think so, why else would I run myself ragged each year cranking out twenty-five uninterrupted days of Far Out There material every December? I mean, a...

There are a lot of times where I come up with joke ideas that belong in a youtube video, not a webcomic.  Ya know, stuff where you just edit clips together, and the juxtaposition IS the joke?  That sort of thing's easy when you can just grab the original clip, but it's WAAAAY harder to do in a medium where you actually have to draw the stuff yourself.  The timing of those jokes really depend on instant recognition, if you have to stop for a second and figure out who that character...

Another Weekly Anime Comic WITHIN THE SAME WEEK AS THE LAST ONE?  That's, like, still failing to live up to the name, but in a way I'd have to go out of my way to achieve!  But yeah, I wanted to get SOMETHING else up this week, but the AWA 2017 comics aren't ready yet, and none of the Far Out There stuff is presentable either, and I don't have any blog posts finished... so have another Konosuba page!  I'm trying hard to go ahead and get the whole run finishe...

I hate doing "comics about how I'm not getting comics done" like this.  It gives me bad flashbacks of those old Xanga blogs where you'd see a whole page of "Sorry I haven't been posting more" entries.

Buuuuuut, yeah, I couldn't pretend this didn't happen.  I mean, I gave prior warning that the "weekly" part of "Weekly Anime Comics" was going to be vestigial for a while, but MAN I didn't think it'd take this long for another page to squeak out.  If there's any good news, though, ...
