Conventional Wisdom: Hoshicon 2016 - page 4

No.  No I do not.  You just wait for when I head down to AWA later this year, we'll be lucky if I can avoid spontaneously taking a drive through the mountains at some point.

Also, just for the record, if you know perfectly well that there's a fairly large amusement park at the exit you're planning to get gas at, JUST KEEP DRIVING. 'Cos holy crap, everything around Carowinds was a ZOO.  That seems like it should be obvious... and I'm sure to a person who actually LEARNS from thin...

MAYBE this will change once the new series hits Netflix, but for now, this happens a lot.

Oh, and if you felt ripped-off that The Kids didn't make a cameo in the main update, it's 'cos I bumped this page over to Patreon at the last minute and didn't think to stick them into one of the other pages afterwards.  Um... oops?

(And no, I have no idea if this guys is actually the parent of any one of these kids.  I haven't even bothered to give them NAMES yet, extended families ar...

So, this was SUPPOSED to look like walls of rain, but now that it's done, it looks more like a lot of weeds... or, like, a half-waxed hairy chest... which, eew.

But yeah, it spontaneously rained a lot during this con, leaving a lot of schmucks (like yours truly) stuck without an umbrella or rain jacket because they figured it'd stay as sunny as it was in the morning all day.  My only saving grace was that I'd never bothered to clean out my backpack after Animazement, and there was a frick...

I've mentioned elsewhere that I really like any excuse to just ditch the express way and take the scenic route, and MAN did I do a lot of that for Hoshicon.  There was a lot of traffic and construction between me and Charlotte, and I'd already had enough of traffic as it was, so I took the first alternate route I could find.  Admittedly, said alternate route ended up adding a lot more time than just sitting in the traffic ever would have, but it was SOOOOOOO worth it.  Rather than...

You're always learning new things as an artist, discovering new aspects of your craft, finding out things about yourself as you work.  For example, I've learned that I REALLY NEED TO BUILD UP MORE OF A BACKLOG OF MATERIAL BEFORE CONVENTION SEASON STARTS UP.  Yeah, I'm really supposed to be working on stuff of Otakon while also finishing up those extra Hoshicon pages right now, but it's been SO FRICKIN' LONG since I got another Far Out There page out the door, I needed to take a break a...

...well, okay, I exaggerate a LITTLE bit.  There's only, like, two frames of actual obscured nudity in all three OVAs.  But on the other hand, after an entire season of cracking jokes about Momiji being flat, they DID spontaneously have her sprout a pair of giant bazongas.  AND this is the only anime I can think of that chose to wrap up the run of the entire franchise ON A HOT SPRINGS EPISODE.  So there's that.

So, anyway, this page was SUPPOSED to have come out a w...

Conventional Wisdom: Why haven’t you gone back to *INSTERT CON HERE*?

Every so often, somebody wonders why they haven’t seen any comics from their favorite con this year. Most of the time, it’s just a simple answer of “Oh, I don’t go to that con.” After all, despite all our strides at cloning and matter teleportation, no human being can attend EVERY con in the country. But while that’s an easy answer for a con across the country in a place I’ve never even been to, it’s a bit more awkward when the con is one I actually HAVE attended before. If y...

Two Blue Seed comics in a row?  Well, this one kind of had a strict deadline behind it.  When you have an idea to replace blatant Japanese patriotism with blatant American patriotism, and the 4th of July is right around the corner, you pretty much HAVE to make sure they coincide.

And no trying to read a deeper political meaning into this, I just like playing around with the formula to things to see how different they look with a single ingredient chanced (and you gotta admit, tha...

Sometimes it feels like I'm actually writing jokes for a video, then trying to make it happen as a comic because I don't have any video editing experience.  Case in point, this page would have worked a LOT better if I could just cut to the actual Hot Fuzz clip rather than trying and failing to draw some convincing caricatures of Nick Frost and Simon Pegg... especially since, if I'd done that, I wouldn't have gotten the scene the quote comes from totally wrong (they're sitting the police car...

See?  See?  Didn't I say I'd get a few extra comics out before the month was over?  Well look!  A single extra page!  That TOTALLY makes up for the whole month of inactivity, right?  RIGHT?  ...yeah, I know.  I'll still have at least a LITTLE more before the week's out, even if that technically falls under NEXT month.  Oh well.

YES!  I actually managed to get the Blue Seed comics rolling again before the end of the month!  Only JUST before the end, but still!

...and yeah, I know I could just SHOW the engrish, like I did in that last panel anyway, but that's only half the fun.  It's the sudden, out-of-nowhere shock of when you're hearing Japanese words and being used to not understanding it and getting in the grove of everything and BOOM SUDDEN ENGLISH WORD!  The whole "Hahahaha, that probably ...

*GASP* MORE UPDATES!

Yeah, sorry for such a crazy long delay, but as I was saying in the Conventional Wisdom comics, I REALLY didn't realize just how badly I was going to burn myself out over Animazement.  I'm gonna try to get a few extra Far Out Theres up here before the end of the month, so that you all get at least SOME of your money's worth... but at the same time, I don't wanna burn myself out AGAIN, so we'll see what happens.

Conventional Wisdom: Animazement 2016 - Page 6

Okay, that bottom caption is a little bit of a lie.  Actually, the real reason all my schedules have been so out of whack post-Animazement was something that happened before I even arrived at the con.  Thanks to some phenomenally poor planning on my part, AZ ended up becoming the deadline for several other creative projects.  A new booklet of Conventional Material to have as a prize, a new book of Far Out There material ALSO as a prize, a brand new Far Out There preview book, all ...

Hey, remember when I said it was supposed to rain on Sunday?  Well it did!  ...right in the middle of that barbecue I was so pleased to be leaving early for.  In fact, this particular downpour isn't what happened to me.  I ended up driving THROUGH the rain on the way to the house, and then it caught up with us and got its revenge after I'd arrived.  But you know how it is, comedic timing and all that.  Either way, a LOT of nerds got very soggy butts by the time the ...

This is one of the reasons I usually bring my own food and drink to a con.  Granted, it's ALSO because a halfway decent bargain hunter can usually find a pack of soda big enough to last all weekend for the same amount that convention center kiosks usually charge for a single bottle, but the rate that the machines sell out is a factor too.  Alas, since it was going to rain that afternoon, I went ahead and dragged EVERYTHING from the hotel room out to the van first thing in the morning, ...

Also, by amazing coincidence, that's also what MY Victory Lap is once a major comic update is finally complete!

Conventional Wisdom: Animazement 2016 - Page 2

I'm physically incapable of being "on time" when it comes to doing most things.  It seems like if I wait until the point when most people would start, I end up running horribly late.  And yet, when I start really early to make up for that delay... I end up taking a perfectly normal amount of time, and thus have to sit around awkwardly waiting for everyone else to catch up with me.  Like, say, getting the Artist Alley table set up a good half hour before any paying customers will a...

FINALLY!  Here it is, folks, your extra dose of Animazement comics!

I'm sure I've mentioned this elsewhere (I bet you it's in the notes for the AWA comics, but I'm too lazy to check), but I actually really enjoy a nice long road trip.  Granted, there's a LOT of disclaimers to that statement, like if you have to leave stupidly early in the morning or have a deadline that you're scrambling to meet or if you get caught in traffic along the way.  However, if the travel spirits h...

We Have A Winner!

That's right folks!  After an overwhelming outpouring of votes (hahaha not really), I can finally announce what my End of the Year project for Patreon will be: New Becky & Gilb comics!

So, what does that mean?  Well, the obvious thing is an actual continuation of the cliffhanger in the last comic all those years ago.  Getting that done by December is the primary goal,...

I cannot BELIEVE I didn't think to start off the entire series with this gag.  Shame on me.

But hey, at least thinking of it during the con meant it got drawn at a time when I'd expected to do nothing but Animazement comics!  Remember, there wasn't SUPPOSED to be any new Blue Seed pages until that was wrapped up!

Megaweapon feels the need to explain his highly elaborate and cerebral insults because he's convinced that everyone other than himself is too stupid to understand them without help.

Well, the Jenna comics had to take a break to make room for other stuff like the madlib comics, so now is the OTHER STUFF'S turn to take a break.  Yeah, the Blue Seed comics are BRIEFLY on hold to free up time for Conventional Wisdom's Animazement stuff, but that means you'll be getting a big heaping dose ...

Well, okay, I KNOW why: it's because apparently none of the Omake Theater shorts are on any decent video host, so they CAN'T go viral.  Seriously, I checked for SOMETHING I could link to here, but it's not even on DailyMotion.  That's like... that's like... I'm trying to come up with some sort of retail-based comparison, but I don't think there is one.  How scarce is a clip is nobody even bothered to post it on DAILYMOTION?

But I digress.  Since apparently most people h...
