Conventional Wisdom: the descent into anime, pt. 2

Last time, I talked about all the anime I unknowingly watched before I had any clue what anime was. Now we get to the part where I became a self-proclaimed “anime fan” …a time when, ironically, I watched very little anime at all. It seems like a lot of people get into anime as a whole after they’ve already become fans of individual works. They get really into two or three shows, gradually come to realize that they share a common art style & hail from the same industry, and eventua...

Oh look, the mysterious female on the cover has a name too!  Also, I SWEAR these characters really do have eyes, just give it time.

Speaking of time, sorry there wasn't a page last week.  The AUSA Conventional Wisdom just went all kinds of crazy.  Once the extra AUSA comics are done next week, I'll do an extra Far Out There to make up for it. (also, we're overdue for another Far Out There Madlib, aren't we?)

Conventional Wisdom: Tiger & Bunny 5

It's funny that I started off the Tiger & Bunny comics with the observation that it was different from western superhero stories, only to have my biggest complaint be EXACTLY my problem with most mainstream superhero stories: It kept getting too bogged down in the melodrama to, you know, actually do HERO stuff.  All in all, I think my favorite part of the whole thing was the first movie.  I know, I know, it was half stock footage, but that version of the first two episodes flowed a...

Conventional Wisdom: Tiger & Bunny 4

This is, quite possibly, the stupidest comic I've ever drawn in my entire life, and I love it.

Also, um, spoilers?  I guess?  Is there really anyone reading this who doesn't know Yuri's backstory, except for people who just don't care one way or the other?

Kevin is legitimately more fun to write for now that he's at least TRYING to be a decent sibling.

I know, I know, pretty much every anime ever that's ever shows the Moon in a scene depicts it as always full and waaaaaaay too close.  Like, all of 'em.  Off the top of my head, the only anime I can think of that regularly kept the moon at a reasonable distance was Soul Eater... and that's the show where the Moon has teeth & a giant nose.  But the combination of size AND color AND how it just kept happening over and over made Tiger & Bunny an especially obvious offender to...

This isn't a very original complaint about superheros, I'll admit, but at least Batman doesn't draw extra attention to his chin by drawing permanent designs on it like Kotetsu does.  Then again, seeing how Blue Rose and Dragon Kid can go unrecognized with nothing but a change of hair color, apparently the citizens of Stern Bild operate on Magical Girl rules of facial recognition.

Conventional Wisdom: the descent into anime, pt. 1

I was planning on doing a blog about how I got into anime in the first place, and I’m still going to do something along those lines next. But the preamble to that one got so long and complicated, I figured I’d better just break it off as its own post. You see, I first made the real plunge into otakudom in my teens, but when I started getting serious about learning more about this exciting, mature new Japanese Animation thing… I was surprised to find I’d already watched a ton of it as a...

Far Out There: Madlib 1 - page 5

I could make a joke here about Torgo being a waiter, but I've worked in the restaurant industry. That's not an unlikely development at all.

Well, that's it for our first Far Out There Madlib!  Sorry it took so long, I'll make a point of not scheduling future ones at the same time as a Conventional Wisdom update.  Which reminds me, there's not going to be a Jenna comic this week, since I kinda sorta already did FIVE extra pages this week.  Gotta permit myself at least SOME ki...

I left myself at a considerable disadvantage in trying to do this comic this way, seeing as how I've never once set foot inside a Disney theme

park.

Also, I have NO idea how a whole galaxy's worth of planets connected by tubes is supposed to work, even by Far Out There's fuzzy science.

Frankly, I find it astounding that Disney hasn't tried to buy up the rights to Manos: The Hands of Fate.  It seems right up there alley.

Bet you all forgot this was even a thing, right?  Those who pledged five dollars or more got to see a plot summary with all the important nouns left blank.  They then got to fill in those blanks, Mad Lib style, so that I could draw some comics based on the results.  Our settup, courtesy of Doctor Hunter Ando:

I tend to over-think this kind of thing, but I still had a lot of trouble getting on the same wavelength as the show for this reason.  It's tempting to say "So what?  A superhero's a superhero", and there's definitely an attempt to incorporate some Western hero tropes into the mix.  But the fact remains that these "superhero" concepts are borne from to vastly different sets of genres, and jumping into one while expecting the other is going to be disorienting.  There's lots of...

Conventional Wisdom: AWA 2015 - page 5

As anyone who's taken I-85 through South Carolina (or, I dunno, watched House of Cards) knows, there's a big ol' peach shaped water tower that looks like a bottom.  Okay, it's called the Peachoid, not peach butt, but come on!

And yes, despite my being in such a hurry to get back that I skipped out before Closing Ceremonies, I still pulled over for 2015-10-11 17:04:41 +0000 UTC View Post

As I already explained in the main comics, I wasted a stupid amount of time on the drive to AWA screwing around South of the Border and taking touristy pictures.  There was no graceful way of taking a picture of this sight though.  Yes, South of the Border apparently pays people to be the on-call janitor in their parking lot bathrooms.  Not just swing...

...well THAT was a cheerful way to wrap up the Idolmaster comics, wasn't it?  I mean, yeah, putting a music-based property into the patented Behind The Music Downward Spiral is second only to the Spinal Tap parody in obviousness, but still.

...which is funny, because probably my one complain about Idolmaster is its decision to get all dramatic in the second half.  I have weird, contradictory problems with all the drama bombs in the later episodes, even if they aren't exactly done...

Yeeeaaah, I'm sure hardcore Idolmaster fans already knew about this, but I honestly didn't realize that the 2011 anime was actually the SECOND Idolmaster series.  Four years earlier, Sunrise made an entirely difference approach to the franchise: Idolmaster: Xenoglossia... which had virtually nothing to do with said franchise, it just looked like any other Gundam-meets-Evangelion mecha knock-off.  Admittedly, I didn't watch the whole thing (I'm not trudging through 24 epis...

This is one of those ideas I was SURE someone else had done already.  I did as thorough an Internet search as I know how, and I'm STILL sure somebody somewhere must have done this already.  There's just no WAY I'm the first schmuck to make such an obvious joke, right?  I mean, taking a musically oriented and turning it into a Spinal Tap reference is straight out of Obvious Pop Culture References 101!

Far Out There: The Vault of Forgotten Comics

A while back, I did a bunch of Voting Incentives that showcased unused Far Out There comic ideas. Some of them were polished up versions of pages I cut out previous story arcs, and others were summaries of whole story arcs that I never got around to doing at all. But there’s a third breed of unused comic that’s very different from either of those. Back when I was first working out the idea of Far Out There, I sketched out a lot -and I mean a LOT- of single page gag comics which have a WIL...
