Don't worry, this is the last one from episode 7. And yeah, I know it's a bit indulgent to do a whole comic about how I can't come up with a comic after two weeks of other comics from the same episode. Really, the biggest issue is that I already made VPN jokes during both sets of Digimon comics I did before this one, otherwise I'd have just done that here. "Access the streaming libraries of other regions AND manifest a digital field without being shut down by the Men In Black!"
But h...

...and just you wait until AI Girlfriends become a thing!
Not a lot else to say... mostly because I find this particular subject matter to be one where a LOT of my potential extra comments could accidentally be taken as a lot lewder than intended.
HOWEVER, just a quick heads up: IT'S ABOUT TO BE VOTING TIME AGAIN... sort of. Next week, I'll set up a poll for the upper-level patrons to decide whether I'll keep going with Dirty Pair into the OVA series after the TV ep...

Man, remember back when the notion of an OLD PERSON using The Internet was uncommon enough to be a punchline unto itself? These days, the only thing more dated than that is the totally-not-an-iMac that Grandma's using.
Also, does it show that I really don't care much for interacting with people online?
Finally, YES, I have once again managed to wring three whole comic ideas out of a single episode, so we'll get one more dose of episode 7 next week... though admittedly the third o...

No, seriously. The second I realized "Oh wait, this THIS episode!" I basically spent the whole half hour just making sure something else didn't happen to distract me from the comic idea I already had.
...and I almost DID have another idea, or at least a different spin on the one you ultimately got. It's kind of funny that I'm making a big deal out of recognizing this bit of art from an episode that otherwise is AGGRESSIVELY off-model. Like, it's a really fun action romp, but this one...

No, but seriously, I'm sure I've seen his episode at LEAST one other time since the original airing, but it still really caught me by surprise just how much episode 7 is calling ahead to future events. Gosh, remember when Digimon shows could actually feel like they were put together according to some sort of PLAN and had actively built toward something instead of just made up as it went along? ...actually, I really shouldn't be throwing...

I WILL NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS STUFF, no matter how tired YOU all may get of me laughing at it.
Also, I was initially just looking to point and laugh at the use of some random song titles on what's supposed to be a spaceship's navigation layout... but then I noticed the "A113" up there. I mean, Dirty Pair aired a few years before people started making that easter egg a thing, right? RIGHT?

I mean, I didn't discover Homestar Runner until a few years after Tamers, so it's hardly surprising that I wouldn't think this at the time. And I did just go on a pretty major Strong Bad Email binge right before watching this episode, so my perspective was definitely a bit compromised...
But you see it, right? A short, big-headed loudmouth who thinks he's a lot cooler than he is? He even wears red gloves!
(Also, I definitely spent less time ...

Certain people will think the funny thing about all this is the suggestion of a future where people still use physical currency at all... and I'm really holding myself back from some very cynical, pessimistic jokes at those people's expense.
I also really held myself back from another round of pointing and laughing at the engrish writing, but I've already gone to that well too often as it is.

I mean, yeah, I really DO get there's plenty of real world reasons why they wouldn't want to give Rika this look permanently. I'm sure this would be noticeably more time consuming to draw than the regular shirt, even WITH the broken heart logo included, and that's not even getting into the question of whether or not early-aughts parents would be okay with a main character in that cartoon their kid watches wearing a frickin' skull all the time. Lord knows Tamers got enough comp...

Wow, it feels like a whole since I busted out Grumbles for a comic... probably because these days I'm enough of a cranky old man to just be a miserable downer openly instead of hiding it behind a cute cartoon character LIKE A COWARD.
Speaking of garlic, I'd also had the idea of taking Namo shorting out from the smell of it and turning it into a "Namo's a vampire" gag... but I really have no idea how I'd draw that and actually make it funny. I mean... where would I even put the fangs? ...

What can I say? I just like Impmon, to the point that I've actually got a whole second comic idea about him from this episode... on top of a whole OTHER comic idea about something else entirely. Yep, I'm doing ANOTHER three pages from this single episode. Jeez, it's gonna take me a couple years to work through this series, huh? Then again, I'm sure I'll mysteriously start getting a lot fewer comic ideas right around the time the Devas arc starts, so we'll see what happens...

Look, it was that or make an election joke, and nobody wants to hear that (Understand, comment section? NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR THAT.)
But seriously, it's a testament to the often wonky pacing of DIrty Pair episodes that the whole fear hallucination thing is as minor plot point as it is. Most shows introducing a plot point like that would make it a key element of the story and let the animators loose on a wacky, indulgent visual showcase as the episode climax. Instead, Kei spends as much...

THIS IS THE LAST ONE, I PROMISE. Next week we finally move on to episode 6, really. But then, considering that I've spent the better part of a month referencing Haruhi, then FMA, and now Naruto, all the evidence suggests that "moving on" isn't something I'm very good at.
...but come on! This is literally what that card does! Renamon is totally a ninja!

Man, Yoink is really getting a workout this weekend, huh? And if the comic wasn't this, it would have been something ragging on the episode for saying that the monsters in the sewers were from the planet "Lovecraft." We'd have been seeing Yoink one way or another no matter what.

Man, I knew watching through Tamers again would be an exercise in nostalgia, but but I had no idea we'd being going THIS deep into the dawn of everyone's collective weeb days. First Haruhi, now Fullmetal Alchemist!
Oh, but before anybody suggests otherwise, I checked: Digimon Tamers started airing several months BEFORE the first chapter of FMA was published, so this definitely wasn't an intentional reference. Just some good old fashioned b...

Heeeeeeey, so you know how last week I took what was originally going to be two separate comics about episode 4 but then did some editing and condensed them down into one single, concise page? Well, I've apparently forgotten how to do that, because this is the first of THREE comics I'm getting out of episode 5! And the crazy thing is, you'll quickly pick up on a shared theme that I probably COULD have used to tie these disparate ideas into a single comic... but noooooooo.
Actually, I ...

I'm pretty sure I've already meme'd a few of these screenshots at one point or another over the years, but the point still stands... the point in this case being that I in no way respect people younger than myself. They're sort of the evil twins of those OTHER three kids who represent the younger generation's more endearin...

Well, it had to happen eventually, but we're FINALLY got an episode of Tamers where I only got a single episode out of it... eventually. Actually, there WAY going to be two separate comics at one point, one dunking on the game graphics and another just about the weird Hypnos control panels, but then I decided they weren't strong enough to stand on their own and mashed 'em together.
But seriously: I do wonder if, at one point, Henry was supposed to playing on a WonderSwan. Those black ...

But seriously, though, does anybody out there know if there were any actual Ghibli artists working on episode 10? I know that this one was outsourced to SOMEBODY different, but in the thirty seconds or so I spent looking online, I couldn't find any reference to specifically who it was.

Also, I couldn't think of a way to form this into a comic, but it's a bit funny to watch the Gargomon fight unedited and remember seeing people online talk about how the Saban version had to be edited because t...

SAKURA IS VERY UNHAPPY THAT I DIDN'T DO COMICS ON THE SECOND HALF OF HER SHOW.... or maybe because Tamers got way less edits when it first aired stateside than Cardcaptors did. I dunno.
Anyway, I've already got a second comic from episode 3 penciled, which'll be up next week. The point five trend continues!

I mean, I'm not saying that would ever be a WRONG decision, I'm just a bit confused how we wound up here. And to anybody doubting if that's "actually" supposed to be a Godzilla mask the dude wears when we first see him, I remind you that this episode literally includes the legit Godzilla skronk when Mughi and Namo show up at the end. There's even less reason for that happening than the mask. See, stuff like this is why I like this show.
Also, just for the record, I was...

Admittedly, Union Station (where the other instance I'm citing) is hardly immune to sketchy behavior itself. But while I did totally get asked if my plastic robot puppet was a bong while on the way back from one con or another, I can safely say that none of my visits to the Union Station food court ever involved a skeletal meth head in full body Minecraft pajamas falling asleep at my feet... which very much was the bus ride back up to Silver Spring on Saturday night. This is really more a dig at anime that reuse their own themes in-universe as a general thing than a specific complaint about Dirty Pair specifically. They're not even THAT bad about it (otherwise Kei would have just been listening to "Ru-Ru-Ru-Russian Roulette" in episode five). Still, unless it's being used in a transformation sequence or a climactic fight scene or some other "you need to feel pumped up right now" moment, I can't help laughing when the theme is used wit...

Anime Fandom is bad and we're all bad people for being a part of it.
But yeah, at first these were going to be their own separate comics, but then I realized that three whole pages just on episode TWO was setting a dangerous precedent, so they got mooshed into one. As a result, though, there's an observation that WAS going to be part of one of the comics that I still want to get off of my chest: the whole Calumon gag is dependent on a line that, it turns out, is only in the Saban ...

Just before anybody asks: my brain only has room to learn the name of any given character ONCE. Thus, even though I'm actually watching the subbed version of Tamers for these comics, I'll still be referring to characters by their Saban dub names where applicable. So it'll be Rika and Henry, not Ruki and Jian. I'm not saying that's how it SHOULD be, I'm just recognizing the factual reality that it's how thing WILL be. You have been warned.
And sure enough...

Somehow, after YEARS of doing these anime comics in one form or another, it's only just in the past week occurred to me that I could just stick a "point five" at the end of the page number and keep the "main" number more or less in sync with the episode number. Clearly, I'm very very good at this. Oh, and before you ask: listing both episode number and a separate page count would be really clunky and awkward to read, and depending on where I post this stuff, it could even run afou...
