Weekly Anime Comics: Macross - page 26

I feel like I've made this exact joke before, but can't remember where, and the mere fact that there's so many possible shows that I COULD have made this joke about means that it totally bears repeating.

AND SPEAKING OF REPEATING: it had to happen eventually, but I've actually managed to get TWO comic ideas out of this one episode!  That means page 27 next week will ALSO be about episode 26!  See, this is why I mark these comics by PAGE number and not EPISODE.  Something ...

Guess who wasn't paying attention and accidentally deleted the photos of the Raleigh Convention Center that were supposed to be the background elements to this comic?  No, seriously, this page served as a vivid reminder of why I prefer to stick with photo backgrounds these days.  It took twice as long to do, and the results are barely half as good.

...but anyway, how about those lines?  I dunno if the con staff were doing the thing where they had people line up somewhere ...

BONUS anime comic: Gunbuster - page 1

I mean, from what I've heard, even Gainax themselves didn't realize just how big Gunbuster would go by the end while they were still working on the early installments.  In that respect, it's kind of funny that MY experience is the exact opposite.  I already know how the end goes, so now the part that others would have taken at face value is the one that throws me for a loop.

Oh, and speaking of how things end, I should really be reminding people of how these comics are going t...

Yeah, I really should have more of a plan in mind before I start referencing something in advance, shouldn't I?

But seriously, this is one of the most legendarily botched episodes of any major anime series.  It's probably a matter of personal judgement whether the art in this episode is actually worse than that of episode 13, but it certainly HURTS this episode much worse.  Between the inclusion of a knife fight, a space wedding, AND a dog fight, there's a whole of action in e...

I don't even know how controversial this opinion even is, I just take for granted that starting ANY sort of conversation about Evangelion online is going to result is somebody somewhere getting irrational about something.  Combine that with the established fact that publicly preferring ANY one thing over another thing automatically makes you the enemy of that other thing, and conflict becomes inevitable.  So might as well embrace the inevitable, right?

And look, I'm n...

There's a real meta aspect to this, because I legitimately forgot that Max and Milia's meeting in this episode DIDN'T immediately lead to their infamous date.  So my first idea for this comic, doodled out while I was still in the middle of watching, had "knife fight" grossly emerging out of episode 24's torso, chestburster-style... and then suddenly the episode was OVER and I realized I'd misremembered a few things.  Now, to be fair to me, I WAS thinking "Wow, I remember the animati...

I know, I know, the whole first half of the episode is the conclusion to the fight that started in the previous episode.  The thing is, I'm not just talking about the basic "But violence is really exciting to watch!" problem that so many anti-war works struggle with.  I'm talking about the basic quality of the animation itself.  For most of episode 23, and ESPECIALLY during the debate over whether or not to accept the defectors, this is another REALLY dodgy-looking episode with...

Just Google it, but only if you want even more proof that anime was a mistake.

...but seriously, what happened here?  Did they just forget they were drawing literally GIANTS for a moment, and it's just a continuity error?  Or did the Macross folks literally make a file-sized Minmay poster that just happens to have absolutely no lettering or logos or anything that would make it LOOK like a poster?  I mean, yeah, they could also have just gotten a giant-sized reproduction m...

Proof of how little we thought this through: We'd initially planned to drive down in the same vehicle, and it wasn't until basically that Thursday morning that we realized we would need to come back home at different times that night.  Hence the last-minute bad planning.

And speaking of bad planning, I'd originally drawn this page with the intention of adding my usual photo backgrounds to it... only to realize waaaay too late that I'd failed to actually take the proper pictures to ...

The last line is funny because it implies that there's any sort of discipline in wrestling companies in the first place.  Case in point, I came up with several additional joke ideas for this, but they all revolved around wrestlers it's either not cool to talk about anymore, or you just can't mention online without a fight breaking out.  Man, and people say the Zentradi are war-like...

Aim For The Top! Gunbuster wins!

There probably wasn't any doubt, but the winner of the "Animazement Dealer's Room Haul" comic competition is Gunbuster!  For anybody who wasn't paying attention and doesn't know what's going on: I'm gonna do some extra comics specifically for Patreon based on the first three episodes of Gunbuster, and possibly a second set covering the other three if the upper tier patrons vote for it.  I'm not gonna jump RIGHT into doing the comics just yet, I wanna get a few more...

...because they're dirty otaku, don't you know.

Actually, if there's one thing to really regret about the making of Macross (oh, only ONE thing?), it's that this show happened before the concept of the Weeb had truly manifested.  I mean, think about it: the Zentradi are all excited about media from this entirely different society that's alien to them.  There's a LOT of ways the otaku meta-commentary already present in these characters could have been further spun into...

I mean, granted, it's hardly the first time the Macross obliterated an entire city without even trying... or the second... or really even the third if you count dragging an island out to Pluto and shooting a massive energy cannon over the roofs as separate instances.  Man, maybe the UN is right to not want the Macross landing anywhere.

IT'S VOTING TIME AGAIN

Any wannabe rock star trying to pull off a really tricky guitar solo knows that, when you mess up, all you need to do is repeat that mistake a few more times until it sounds like you totally meant to do it in the first place.  In that spirit, remember when I screwed up the Weekly Anime Comic voting settings, and tried to make up for it by doing some extra pattern comics about a DIFFERENT anime, and letting upper-level patrons vote on THAT?  Well, let’s do that on purpose this time...

I can totally admire and respect the ingenuity and creativity in something but still not want to have to sit through it.  I think the idea of reusing old animation with new audio and using the "dream logic" excuse to stitch together scenes that never had anything to do with with each other is a genuinely smart way to give cut the animators some slack.  I especially pop for the reuse of the opening credits footage... complete with playing the theme song again.  That's some prime...

You know, for as much as I was complaining about Kaifun last time, I'd actually COMPLETELY forgotten there was this thing about Misa being hung up over him.  Gee, it's almost as if there's already more than enough soap opera plots in this show as it is, or something.  That, or my brain just tries to shut out as much of Kaifun as possible.  Both are likely.

Weekly Anime Comic: Macross - page 15

Look, I'm not a COMPLETE idiot; I know that's the whole point of Kaifun.  And I'll be honest: the contrarian side of me DOES find some amusement in the fact that this rebellious, anti-establishment character who would probably be the hero in most shows turns out to be the most toxic person in the entire cast.  But that's on the conceptual side of things.  It doesn't change the fact that, while I'm in the process of just sitting down and WATCHING the show, I hate having to look ...

Actually, this isn't even true.  The first time I watched Macross, I'd already heard about what a mind trip episode 17 was... which left me all the more surprised and disappointed when 14 hit, and it was NOT that.  Alas, that would take a rather long comic to communicate visually, and it already took me too long to get around to finishing this week's comic as it is.

For the record, my first instincts were to try and make a joke about how episode eleven has, like, a dozen frames of animation... but there are fewer and fewer days when I feel brave enough to point and laugh at how bad somebody ELSE'S sloppy art.  If nothing else, I should really save that for the TRULY derpy-looking episodes.  Like, the art in this one isn't actually BAD, there's just not enough of it.

Also, just an aside: the UN Spacy officer uniform, when presented just in line art form, actually looks a lot more like the classic Klingon uniform than I expected.  Those shoulder things and the belt are is JUST the right spots to distract me.
