Thermal comparisons - Copperhead vs Nova

Just know these thermal tests don’t define anything besides how efficient each system is at cooling the critical zone in a heatbreak. We cannot infer anything else and won’t tell us much besides if it’ll clog low temp materials like PLA.

First neither hotend should have any issue printing PLA. I’ve tested the copperhead beta unit and this is the production unit and the values themselves are all in line as they should be.

Second we have two different logics in design. Cop...

Let's wire this bad boy up!

Time to begin the journey that is Wiring today. I hope to get the extruder and SKR wired so I can write the firmware and have it testing tonight. Party starts at 12:30pm Central USA so pull up a comfy chair and hangout.

Nova thermal testing and machining feedback.

I can say one thing comfortably. The Nova, even though the designer claims it’s the “most thermally advanced hotend,” is not the most thermally advanced hotend in the market.

After numerous cycles the average critical heatbreak temp was 40C. The Mosquito and Copperhead do much better in this regard by over 5C. This makes sense due to the hotends tighter heatsink fins which need more static pressure like the V6 but the included fan is small and underpowered. Not sure if better coo...

One the Hotbed featuring Killer Bootlegs!

If you haven’t heard of the guy I’m not surprised but he’s been featured in dozens of articles, amazon prime documentaries and on tons of convention panels from San Diego Comic con to Deisgner Con and more.

Peter makes bootleg action figures and uses resin printing to help make the most realistic figs on the market. This Saturday at 12pm USA Central let’s meet the man and talk about how he uses 3D printing to make his figs.

Let's interview 3D Fuel!!!

If you've never heard of 3D Fuel head on over to www.3dfuel.com and see some of the highest precision USA made filament on the market. My roll of Pro PLA has a tolerance of +-0.013 which is insanity and it prints really really really well.

Tomorrow, Saturday May 16th at 12pm Central USA time is game right here.

Hope you're ready fo...

Prusa Bear upgrades are back!

I finally have 3 full time printers running CF Petg and it’s time to put them to the test. I have a big shipment of Atomic CF Petg coming, filament dryers, and dry boxes on the way.

Oh! And a website to order the parts from that is in beta so please excuse the dust but if you need Bear CF Petg parts I’m ready to take preorders. Right now I’m posting a 14 day working time before shipment as I don’t have a...

Safety first!

Want to have a happy home? Don’t buy an esun ebox. I set it to 60C and walked away. Came back and it was reading 180C and the smell was amazing.

Gonna take this thing apart and find the flaw but for now I need to find a new dry box next to my printers solution. I have the repbox but I’d prefer a single unit by each printer because my concrete walls aren’t the best to mount spool holders on.

Until then if you have one of these be careful and if anyone has a good solution le...

Nova hotend tests coming

If you haven’t heard some of the outlandish claims of the Nova hotend yet be prepared.

The team at www.3dpassion.com have bold claims and even bolder marketing. Print speeds above 400mm/s, most thermally advanced, most precisely made, etc and etc.

I’ve had a few back and forth conversations with the humans at nova which has led to being told I’m not allowed to buy one. Well good for me I always use a 3rd pa...

SKR Bear Project Update!

My amazing Patrons you've been keeping me busy in the cave and it's all come down to this final bit before fully releasing all the goodness that is the SKR Bear Project.

Shout out to all the Beta testers on discord you've been amazing and keeping me on my toes has been super nice let me tell you. Shout out the Greg from the Bear project for having such a great platform to build off of. Shout out to Keith and Vert for always handling all my Marlin questions and teaching me how to use Gi...

Breakout boards have arrived!!!!

They should be hitting Printed Solid early next week and I can’t wait.

The quality is awesome and they do what they are supposed to do which is help make the signal better for the neopixels.

Now that they are here I can finish the final wiring guide for the SKR Bear project and get everything else finalized.

Thank you to everyone here to helped make it happen. Without your contributions I would have been so focused to get things done. You’re all super people and I lov...

Slimer is almost ready.

Who is Slimer??? Besides ghostbusters this is my first adventure into a prusa with a Volcano and TMC5160 drivers.

I’ve used a volcano on my Hemera Sidewinder but only to print things with huge layers quickly. I also have a Mosquito Magnum BMG which does a smashing job but it’s time to try things seriously and see what they do.

The TMC5160 drivers are pretty neat. They are more on the cnc side to drive bigger motors but why not. I bought them a long long time ago and never us...

My first open source project!

Thank you all so much for keeping me inspired and bust learning and testing. Within the next 2 weeks my first open source project hits the market via Printed Solid.

What is it??? It’s Uber simple but it’s something that saves me a headache so I’m excited for it.

It’s a Neopixel breakout board. In order to get neopixels working optimally you need to solder a 1000uF cap and a 330 ohm resistor. It’s not hard but it’s not clean and in order to fit the wires in the v slot...

SKR Bear updated!!

The future is now!

So compiling firmware can be tricky. Maintaining a variant firmware for every possible option is a headache. What if we could simplify marlin and the build?

We can!!! Shout out to Vert aka Rex who did the magic and made it possible to load, edit, and compile a firmware for the mods you have in under 3 minutes.

Dude is a genius straight up and even though he’s still tweaking a few things and working on adding more mods it’s almost ready to launch. Got to keep testing and seein...

Write up coming to the GitHub ASAP and I’ll do a video of it. Very straightforward for the most part.

I’m almost ready to move the SKR project out of beta and into Release. Thanks to the humans already testing we can conclude all the features work as intended and coming soon will be a final firmware with tons of custom features ...

Bear Linear Rail Y Axis

Soooo people have asked and here it is. I made a very poor how to install but to make up for it all the printed parts and near completely BOM are there.

I’m missing the M5 screws needed but will update it today.

Just remember that an official Bear linear rail Y axis is coming and feel it’ll be far better and much better documented. This setup has worked for me and it does take patience to align the rails just right so you’re not causing issues.

Potential Prusa Mini Fire Risk

I’m seriously confused by this but someone approved this odd design of wiring the bed connector to the bed itself.

I mean we’ve all seen the original MK3 burning up at the connector when it was soldered and they used stiff wire. They eventually upgraded new printers with softer wire and attaching the connectors via screw and washer directly to the pad.

Now I’m not sure how this is supposed to work well but the Mini has the pad being contacted by plain M3 screws ...

Turbo time!!!

People keep asking for some turbo so I got some turbo. Tomorrow I’ll swap over the last MK3s Bear I have and get this working.

Shawn is testing the WiFi module so I decided I’d join along and see if that would be something fun to try.

I also received the power panic module for the SKR and have to figure out how they want it run and then wire it in.

After this I can get back to fun stuff like making profiles for the stock printers. Let’s do this!

GitHub is up with most of the info!

I’m still finishing a BOM but base firmware and the wiring guide is all up. A cheat sheet to help change settings to match your setup is also up.

Firmware in compiled and ready but also included the configs that changed so you can download Marlin 2.0.3 and make your own build.

I’m heading to bed and then I’ll hammer out the BOM.

Monday I’ll have the SKR V1.4 Turbo and will do up some firmwares for that. Stay tuned for more goodness!!!
