I drew a hat. I know it looks like a background painting but it isn't- it's going to be on a character's head, which will move around like heads do. Much like Double King's crown though, it will conveniently always face the camera, so I won't have to draw it again. But why is it so much more detailed and rendered than everything else? Who knows! I think I wanted the first time you see the hat in the film to feel dramatic, but looking at it here, removed from context, I'm painfully aware that ...

When people ask me what I'm making I say "a film about frogs", but I'm not sure how true that is, because this is the first shot I've animated with any frogs in it for a good long while. I should say "a film with occasional frogs throughout".
Still, here they are once more, making a graceful and dignified re-entrance.
Hello! Welcome to February, and thanks to old and new supporters for all your help!
Today I sent away the Pen Pal tier drawings for January. Here's one of them, which I have digitally coloured- the original lineart is one of a bunch now making their way around the world. Whoever receives these pigs needs to take good care of them, they fright easily!
Bricks! Here are some of those, in a big tube, and you are in it. But how???
Well, the bricks are redrawn frame-by-frame, but I made this "digital grid" as a guide to draw over. A grid is a useful guide to have when making any pattern conform to a warping surface, but especially convenient for bricks, because they are almost a grid already.
This is not the final shot- the bricks still need to undergo a bunch of compositing to match the more painterly bricks from other background...
The toes from that last gif are back. And this time they mean business! Looking forward to making the ground zip along underneath them in completely broken perspective

Obviously quite an unfinished shot here, but in its current state, I thought it offered some good insight into my very dumb animation practices.
Some big nerd: Start by working out the key poses of your character, let your character's walk be a reflection of their emotion
Me, all the time: Walking? Feet do that. Better make some feet. Make feet walk. The body will just have to keep up with whatever they end up doing
The extensive amount of writing on the subject suggests that a character doing "a take" was a staple of animation at some point in time, but I do not remember the last time I had to animate one.
Not the most exciting shot, but I enjoyed the task of trying to make nuanced acting happen, just by sliding around a bunch of circles.
I'm trying not to give away too much of the film's storyline on this tier, but you may have already guessed that this gif, is a character reacting to the thi...
And so is this thing! Who are they, and what are they doing hiding in the dark? We won't find out until a while later in the film- for now, they're just a face peering out from the shadows.
I hope everyone has had a good start to the new year! I'm looking very forward to finishing this little film with you all in 2020.
Hello everyone! I’ve sent out the ink drawings to my Pen Pals for November. As always, here’s one I’ve coloured in digitally- the original line art is on its way to one of you now!
ALSO! I’m going to be away from my desk for a decent portion of this month, to spend Christmas with family interstate. I’ll still be working on the film for part of the month, but considering the sizeable interruption, I was worried I might not have anything interesting to show on Patreon for a bit...
hey come here a minute would ya, real quick just come get in this tiny nut

My films are made digitally (mostly). Usually, the final designs, as well as the animation, are both made entirely in the computer since the animation methods impact the design. But when I hit a mental roadblock, I’ll often turn to paper and rapidly fire out scribbly ideas until a way forward opens up, at which point I will throw down the sketchbook and go back to the computer. The sketchbook usually doesn’t get the dignity of containing anything close to a final design, and because I wor...

A dumb quick WIP of what I did this morning. Namely, lip-syncing a pair of yellow-tailed black cockatoos to a field recording. I'm not sure anyone has animated these birds before, which is a shame because they are very animated birds. They are also huge and loud and I love them.
They'll be moving their bird-bods as well as their beaks, I just divided up the task to make it less confusing.
Pros and cons to lip syncing cockatoos screeching:
Pros:
-No lips
-they just open ...
Hello, to patrons new and old! October's ink drawings for the Pen Pal tier have been shipped off today! As seems to be a monthly tradition, here's one that I picked to colour in digitally.
At the time of writing this, there appears to be ONE opening for another Pen Pal, if anyone would like one of my original November drawings!
Thank you to everyone for your continued support. The film I'm working on I started a long time ago (December 2017?) but never had the time to work on it...
(The toilet won't actually be this lonely, I just haven't finished painting the background)

Hello all! I wanted to share a little bit of visual development regarding a character in the film. I haven't made her FINAL design yet, but I'm a couple of shots away from her being introduced, and so I'm thinking about her again. She is a common brushtail possum, and will probably be the closest thing to the "main character".
These sketches are all from around mid-2018. I had animated a teeny bit of the frog film at the start of the year, but I didn't know what to do with it, and it was j...
today for the film, I am animating this horrible buzzing man. Watch out for his nasty nose!

Thank you once again, to all the patrons here supporting me for another month- and of course, hello and thank you to any new patrons! I shipped off the September drawings for the pen pal tier today- one of them is the original line art for this drawing here, of a train being haunted by regret! So whoever is getting that can look forward to also being haunted.
This is a scene that has been stuck in my head for years- I don't know why. I imagine it animated and looking like a bad old scr...
Here's a little thing nobody has seen before, aside from this one very slimy record executive!
It was 2016. I'd managed to save up some money the previous year, and so I thought I would take a break from freelancing to work on Double King full time and get it finished. But of course, the savings had nearly run out before Double King was anywhere near done. And when you freelance, it’s not like you can just take on a shift either- it requires a couple months of hunting and negotiating...
Patreon supports gif files right? Hope so. Here's a bug I made today for the film!

The ink drawings from last month are being sent off to my "Pen Pal" tier patrons today! Here's one of them, which I've gone and digitally coloured in- the original line art is on its way to one of you fine folk.
Thank you to everyone for your support again this month- animation is slow at the best of times, but I've made so much more progress on this next film than I ever would have without your help.

Hello! This is something I know a bunch of you have been waiting for- download links to my films! BIG CRISP copies too! These are the highest res versions I have, that I send to film festivals and clients and the like.
I've been exploring different options to securely share big files with Patrons, but haven't found a perfect solution, so for now HERE is a Google Drive link! Just don't share it around ok? Ok cool:

Here's a frame from the shot I'm animating at the moment, which introduces a new character. Everybody, meet "Human"! That may not be his real name, but it's what I'm calling him for now because he's the only human character in the film (I think).
I'm not actually sure how much of a role he'll play in the end, that remains to be seen- I did have a storyline in my head a while ago where he was really central, but I think I'll be taking the film in another direction.
STILL, Human ...
Today I posted off all the "Pen Pal" tier drawings for July! Here's one that I decided to digitally colour in. The original ink linework is currently on its way to one of you, somewhere in the world! Enjoy your new pet, make sure to feed him every 28 minutes until you die thank you
Before starting this Patreon and working on other people's animation full time, I was usually too burnt out at the end of the day to work on my own animations, so making music was my main personal creative outlet. It’s something that I’ve always done, but apart from the Double King album I’ve never really published any of it.
ONE of the projects I’ve been considering doing after this current film (there are a few), is to finish up and release some of my music with an animated eleme...
As mentioned in my last post, we were moving house- we needed a place with space for an office AND a nursery. That has subsequently happened, and the office is now in this funny wallpaper room. Here is where the frogs, and also not frogs, will be made from here on! The frog from my last post is also here, and he is getting wet and loving it!

I'm moving house, and tomorrow is the part where I pack up my computer and desk and animation stuff and take it all away, so that will be out of action for a bit this week.
But before I do, here is some concept art for the next shot, of a frog having a nice shower. I enjoyed animating water on the last shot, and so I decided to work some more of it in (which is easy when the film is about frogs). Talk to you all again soon, from the new office!
Well, I've finished my first months worth of ink drawings, which will be posted off to my Patreon Pen Pals very soon. Here's a peek at a couple of them- perhaps one of these will be yours! A lot of these were done as "warmup drawings" at the start of my work day, as a little creative playground free from the context of the film. It's a pretty mixed bag of drawings content-wise, but I took time and care with all of them!
I may show more of these later on, or turn some favourites into fi...
