Chapter 00 - Prologue

Wrapped tight in his cloak of stardust and screams, Midarian moved through the Margins with great haste. The place between realities was like a second home to the rogue Magi but even he knew the dangers of loitering.

“Mustn’t wake the Old Gods,” he muttered to himself as red starlight streamed around him. Broken civilizations long-since-razed, blurred and rebuilt to glory then quickly crumbled once more as he passed. “Cranky when awoken,” he added before he ...

Goal #2 Reached: The Map

This is, quite simply, insane.

It feels like only yesterday when the last goal was broken! Okay, enough freaking out. Down to business. Namely, The Map.

Do you love maps? I absolutely cannot get enough of them. It is by far one of my favorite accompaniments to any story out there.

Here’s how it’ll work: Toward the end of each month I’ll release an updated map with the current known and discovered world that Hal has seen or visited (however briefly).<...

First Goal Reached!

Happy New Year everybody! I hope you’re all having a great 2020 so far.

I’m absolutely floored by the support you awesome people have shown me. I honestly expected it to take much longer to hit the first goal and it makes my heart swell to have you all here.

But I’m sure you’re more interested in the goal reward than hearing me get all sappy! I’ll be creating a Discord ...

Catch-Up (November) Q&A!

So, as some of you may have realized it is no longer November. But worry not! I'm still hosting a Q&A and I'll do another for December after Christmas but before the new year.

My aim with the monthly Q&A is to give you guys an opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the story, me, my process, or really anything you want. The floor is yours so you get to decide what you want to ask!

In the future (January, specifically) the Monthly Q&A will typically be do...

Chapter 05

Hal’s heart dropped into his stomach. He was going to be killed? Questions raced through his mind at the same time he was desperately trying to deny that it was going to happen. Clearly, they mixed something up.

A clerical error. Something like that. There was no way he was going to be put to death for simply being in the wrong place. He’d done nothing wrong.

“So, you’re a priest?” Hal asked, trying to keep his voice calm.

The woman shoo...

Chapter 04

Hal’s arm was nearly wrenched from the socket as Elora pulled him into the adjoining room and slammed the door behind them. It had shelf upon shelf of potions. Dried herbs hung from the ceiling in bunches.

Still holding Hal’s hand, Elora jumped and grabbed a dangling cord he hadn’t seen among the herbs and a sliding ladder dropped into place at her feet. “Up,” she commanded, slinging him around and pushing him up to the ladder. “Go. The door won’t ...

Chapter 03

“Are you taking your potions? You know how you get...” said a woman, her voice laced with worry and concern.

Hal recognized that tone. It’s the one his mother used to use on him all the time when he was struggling to pick a major, unable to stay pinned down to anything for more than a year. It was the tone of repressed disappointment and motherly worry.

“No, I haven’t been taking the potions, Mother,” snapped a familiar girl’s voice....

Chapter 02

Under the failing light, Hal crept out of the woods. He kept as low as possible, moving between the walls of swaying laundry hanging out to dry. Every footstep felt impossibly loud as it crunched on the dry grass.

So far he only found bed linens and women’s clothes. Up ahead he saw the dark cloak he spotted from the forest and made a beeline for it.

The brown cloak was in direct view of an open window. And on its sill was something that looked a lot like a pie...

Chapter 01

Colors swirled and collapsed upon each other. Hot and cold wind blew across Hal’s face from different directions. Before his disoriented mind could discern up from down, the ground rose up and smacked into his face.

Luckily, the soft grass cushioned the fall. Hal wanted to lay there for a while longer. He wanted nothing more than to shut his eyes and will himself to wake up on his couch back in his studio apartment in Seattle.
