November's Writing Experiment & 1st Long Stream (Day 10)!

Helloooooo everyone! 🍂 Hope you're feeling well and have had a FANTASTIC start to your November!

Day 1 of NaNoWriMo (the real Day 1, and not my October 24th switcharoo bahaha) I spent on the beach, relaxing and reading!

Day 2 I spent in airports and planes, and Day 3 I spent recovering from my body getting used to Texas allergies again bahaha.

You Challenge Me, I Challenge You!

Is it too early to be thinking about 2023? Maybe. But we're gonna do it anyways, because I had a brilliant beyond brilliant idea for a new series!

I absolutely adore our current monthly writing experiments, from the cozy and chill to the chaotic and crazy, and those won't be going away! In fact, there's only one part about them I don't like: That I have to do them alone.

But what if we changed t...

'Tis the season of long writing sprints (and even longer streams)!

Hello hello everyone!

I've returned from the incredible Written in the Mitten writing retreat feeling very relaxed and creatively recharged! It was so much fun and so awesome to get to know some of my writer friends even better. :)

Since returning home, my time has been a mix of drafting new Project Death scenes, prepping for NaNoWriMo, handwriting fun chapters of a nonsense project, and watching Halloween movies.

Last night was Muppets Haunted Mans...

A LIVE Kitchen Timer Stream & Preptober Advent Calendar??

WELP. I take a little break from making YouTube videos and the above is what happens! I completely forget how to make short(ish) vlogs bahaha.

The "Kitchen Timer Method" has been a lifesaver for me (and what little sanity I still have lolol), and since I'll be gone for a bit on a writing retreat, I know I'm going to use it again to help me upon my return.

The book advises that you ...

Titles, Titles Everywhere! (a fun little survey)

(Survey link up top for ease of access! 🔮)

So I was on a walk the other day, listening to the podcast There Are No Girls On The Internet (highly, highly recommend!) and figuratively stopped in my tracks when I heard the interviewee say the line: "Again, I think so many corners of the internet are dark and terrible for women. And the ones that are the most dark and terrible, are the ones that look the...

What are some writing lessons you had to learn the hard way??

Hey, hey everyone!

Thank you all so much for sending love and good vibes on the previous post! When we're in the middle of our own personal struggles, it's such a relief to know that others have gone through the same thing, are currently going through something similar, or have tips, tricks, and love to give. I've always found the writing community to be so incredible about this, and y'all just keep affirming that for me. So I can't thank you enough. <3

Being MIA & August/September's Writing Experiment!

Hello, hello everyone!! It's time to vote on this month's writing experiment! And as it perfectly pertains to why I've been so offline, let's go ahead and jump into things...

Why I've Been MIA!

I need to start by taking y'all all the way back to my preteen years, when I had my first migraine. (Imagine a Smol Me trying to explain experiencing a visual aura for the first time: "Umm there are colors. And they flash. And then they get big. And then I can't see anythin...

How are you engaging with your fellow writers??

So I have a couple meandering questions for y'all today!

Earlier this morning, I managed to finally work up to cancelling the hosting of my old website, and while waiting for customer service help (because I had Many Problems, they do not make cancelling easy bahaha) I started reading a recent newsletter from an old writer friend.

Now I haven't chatted with this writer friend in, like, two years. But I still read her newsletter! In fact, she's one of the few newsletters I...

How to write a lot of words when you're in a time crunch!

Y'ALL!

Y'all....

I did it.

Okay, okay, it's worth pointing out that I'd originally thought this first cozy mystery draft would be 45K words and it ended up landing at just over 40K.

But still! I COMPLETED IT IN TIME.

(If I'd been a smarter Kate, I would have written more on the 27th and 28th and wouldn't have felt such a crazy push to reach the end these last few days, ...

DOUBLE STREAM DAYS & methods to this weekend's madness!

UPDATE!: Sorry y'all, precious Zelda got into some extra treats she shouldn't have tonight and has been a little sick. (The plus side of having a best friend whose family is full of vets -- they confirmed she should be okay!) Pushing back tomorrow's stream to 11am CDT.

Thanks!

A Race to the End of July!! (an update & an experiment)

HELLO Y'ALL! Long time, no talk, my sincerest apologies! It's been a whirlwind of a month, but we are nearing the end of it.

So at the start of July, I set several writing goals for Camp NaNoWriMo. I've accomplished.....

  • 1 goal in full (outlining my novel following Romancing the Beats),
  • .25 of my Project Death goal,
  • .25 of my previous Camp project I was writing with my brother,
  • and probably .33 of my Episode goals.

And while I'm happy w...

Double Stream Day TODAY & tomorrow!

Hello. I know many of our worlds are on fire right now and we all have our own ways of grieving, but I'm going to move ahead with the Double Stream Day for today and tomorrow as originally planned. (Frankly, I need the distraction.)

So if you also can't find a way to write and need a distraction from doomscrolling, come hang out. If you're switching to a story where your characters are overthrowing the government, come hang out. If you're switching to a cute romcom because you need an e...

What would you do on an "inspiration day"?

I wanted to pick y'alls brains a little bit! I've been thinking about having an ✨Inspiration Day✨: a day meant specifically for refilling the well. For enjoying, learning, and maybe even analyzing the new and the old.

While I've had no "official" Inspiration Day in the past, usually I find the most inspiration by walking through libraries or bookstores and hitting up museums for a few hours. (Museums are my faaaaavorite source of inspiration.)

If you could set up your dream In...

JUNE'S MONTHLY EXPERIMENT 👾💻

This month's writing experiment is inspired by Project Death Draft 5! Before starting the rewrite, I knew I needed to focus on several things:

  • expanding the world-builiding,
  • fleshing out some character backstories,
  • re-working Act 2 leading into Act 3 and getting rid of the "stressy messy" ending.

I've done most of these on my own, either brainstorming by hand or dragging and dropping in Scrivener & Campfire....

BUT

I thought, wouldn't ...

I'll be working on some more Project Death world-building and fleshing out/intertwining some backstories. And of course, we'll do some various (controlled?) chaos to decide the sprint lengths.

June Goals, Double Stream Days, & world-building questions!

HAPPY JUNE, Y'ALL!

After a vacation, COVID, and a lingering migraine, I finally feel like I'm back! My soul left my body for a bit but it has, thankfully, returned bahaha.

Here's a video detailing some of my big goals, not just for June, but also leading up to my birthday (aaaayyyy), and for all of my ~30th year~. The main one, of course, is that I'm returning to Project Death fully this month! And I am so ecstatic. I'm at the point that it feels like all the various pieces, over ...

What is your favorite (weird? little?) part of the writing process??

Hey y'all! So way back in January, I went on Instagram and asked people what their favorite part of the writing process was. I got a lot of very....interesting?....answers. (And y'all know I love interesting.)

So I figured I would corral all those options and ask you guys which was your favorite among them! I'm not quite sure if I should call these your favorite "little" part of writing or what, so if you have a suggestion for how to encapsulate all of these possibilities, I'd ...

COVID & Catch-up!

Hello helloooooo everyone! It's been a while!

As lots of y'all know, I went on vacation a couple weeks ago. (This is the first one in a bit that wasn't centered around attending someone's wedding bahaha.)

But what you likely don't know is that, while on vacation,...I caught COVID!

The End of April is Nigh | DOUBLE STREAM DAY!

It's Double Stream Day, y'all!

I just finished Chapter 7 of The Secret Theatre earlier today, which means I've written a whopping five chapters (womp womp) in my shared project with my brother.

HOWEVER!

I shan't let April beat me. So my ~new~ goal is to reach Chapter 14 by the end of the month. (If I succeed, that means I'll have drafted exactly half of my chapters a...

Rejections, Finishing First Drafts, & Other Updates!

Hey y'all, hey!

So I took an impromptu hiatus off social media and streaming this past week to get shit done....and I did!

(I'm somehow always surprised when that actually happens? In the past, I've totally told myself that I'm going to do something, and then a day passes, and then the next day, and then the next, and then that thing never really gets done. BUT NOT THIS TIME.)

Anyways, all this preamble to say...I finished the first draft of my romance novel!

Hey y'all! As you're all (very) aware, I am The Worst at naming things. So I wanted to see if I could pick your brains for an upcoming "series." (In quotes because...well, you'll see.)

While moving some old vlog footage from my camera to my computer, I realized that I had seeevveeerraaalll video concepts that I just...never edited. Like they're all filmed, but they've just been sitting around. (Including the vlog of finishing Draft 4 of Project Death! Like what...

March/April Experiment: Who should I try writing like (but ACTUALLY writing like)??

It's time for a big writing experiment! Here are my most popular "I Tried Writing Like" routine videos:

Titling Experiment!

Alright, I need y'alls help. As you're probably well aware, I am The Worst at titles. (Thus, Project Death, Project Blue, Project Purple, Project Blue 2, I could go on...)

So I've decided to undertake a titling experiment, of sorts. I took notes and came back home, set a timer for 5 minutes, and tried to come up with as m...

March Goals & Double Stream Day (this weekend!)

Happy Preparch everyone! 🍀

Will I ever live down that nickname? No. Did my brother, when we were organizing our Camp NaNoWriMo plans last week, call that month "Prepuary"? Yes.

So you can clearly tell we're related. And equally good at naming.

ANYWAYS. I hope you've had a great start to this new month. I'm (almost) caught up from February, and actually on time with my goals video!! While filming, Vin decided to let her star shine and so I gave her the thumbnail she ...
