Modern Games for Retro Systems

I've been wanting to review these for a while, so here they are!  I won't have time to work on any videos for the next week or so since I'm about to leave for New York for the Long Island Retro Gaming Convention.  Maybe I'll meet some of you there!

behind the scenes of "The Commodore Story"

"The Commodore Story" came to Kennedale, Texas this morning to film me and Anders Jensen as part of their tour across much of the world. My little studio room was full of unusual and expensive gear.  This is a little behind the scenes clip my daughter took as they were doing a test run of the gear before we started the interview.  I thought you guys might like to see it.  The documentary is supposed to premiere this December.

Casio MT-68 Review with Anders Jensen

This video wasn't exactly planned.  I knew Anders Jensen, who does much of the music for my channels, was coming to Dallas in late July.  He lives in Norway so I haven't ever met him in person. I knew we would make a video together, but I wasn't sure what it would be.  So, we just hung out the first day and got to know each other. Then I asked him if he'd be interested in trying to make some music on this vintage Casio that was recently donated to me.  The results are stunnin...

Poll - What's a fair price for a game?

I've made significant progress on my real-time-strategy game for the C64.  It's probably 85% complete at this point.  I'm nearing the point of needing beta-testers, by the way, for anyone who is interested.

So, one problem I have is figuring out what is a good a fair price for a brand-new game for a vintage platform.  Granted, I've spent 6 months of my life coding this game, and I don't really expect to profit much from it relative to the time I put into it.  However, ...

Osborne One - Part 3

Here's the 3rd and final part of the Osborne series.  I hope I did it justice on showing how it worked and what you could do with one.  I could have probably made the episode twice as long and still not covered everything, but I am hoping this is a nice balance considering it's just a business computer.

This will go live to the world in a few hours when I'm done with the thumbnail and closed captions.  Thank you to all of my Patrons!

Unboxing Donations for June 2017

In this video you'll see all of the items that were donated to me in June of 2017.  It was quite a lot more stuff than I was expecting and this video is quite long.  Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for all of the donations, but I may have to start splitting this up into two parts every month, to space it out some.  I really never anticipated getting this much stuff.

Covox and Disney Sound Source

I started work on the Osborne restoration video, but it started raining and rained all week and since I needed the sun for retrobrite, I had to shelve that project.. so I bring you this one instead! I know LGR covered these with a pretty good episode a while back, but I felt like there was a lot of information I could add to these, so I hope you enjoy!

Commodore VIC-20 Overload

I had planned to make this a 5 minute video.  But somehow it ended up being 22 minutes long.  It took much longer than expected and I didn't finish the new 1080p intro sequence I've been working on.. So you'll get the 720p version of that this time.  What's more irritating is I made a custom program to generate my Patreon screen in the credits on my C64.  And then Patreon just conveniently changed the logo, so now I get to re-do it with the new logo.  Anyway, enjoy!

Korg Poly 800

So my first true 1080p video ended up being 8-Bit Keys, however, I still haven't had time to re-do the intro for high-def.  I'm currently working on a brand new intro sequence for both channels.    I'm also still working to get the color balances right on this new camera, it's so very different from what I'm used to.  I imagine it will be a few more episodes before I am totally honed in on it.

Equipment upgrade video

This video was an experiment... like a trial run.  Good thing I made it too, because I already found several issues.  The one thing I couldn't fix in post was the slightly out-of-focus video of myself.  This is my first 1080p video.  Most of the footage was actually filmed with my old cameras.  The only footage filmed with the new camera was the footage of me talking to the camera.

So the good news is that editing on the new computer is snappy.. In fact, it...

Full HD is coming...

There will be some extra delay before the next videos start coming out because I'm finally making the switch to HD.  I know people have been screaming for something higher than 720p...  Making the switch, however, is not trivial.   Although my existing system was capable of doing it, my cameras were not really good at it (the bitrate was barely any better in 1080p) and the computer I use for editing was a 2010 Mac Mini with 8 GB of RAM, which ran like molasses on 1080p or hig...

Little update for May

So just a heads up about what has been going on for a few projects:

8-Bit Keys - I know it seems like I've abandoned the channel, but I haven't.  The problem is I've got a lot of projects piled up all over my workspace both on my office desk and on my workbench in the studio for these 8-Bit Guy videos and I just have nowhere to film anything right now.  So I'm rushing the best I can to finish up some of these projects so that in a week or two I can start working on s...

Unboxing 8-Bit Donations for April

OK, so this is sort of an experiment.  I want to see what you Patrons think of it before releasing it to the world.  On the bright side, this doesn't really take much time.  I film these as I'm opening them throughout the month.  So it only took me about 2 hours to edit this together this morning.  So you can consider it "bonus material" since it will not take away my time from other projects.  In the future I hope to get it out closer to the 1st of the month, but i...

How Character LCDs work - Part 1

This will be a two parter (unless everyone hates the first part)

I'm a little late getting a new video out.  I've started 3 videos this month that all had to be shelved temporarily due to problems such as shipping delays and broken/uncooperative hardware.  So, I jumped to this video ahead of schedule.   Let me know if you think this video is too technical, or doesn't go deep enough, or is just right.

NES Classic Alternatives

Interesting timing.. I had been planning this video for months and started work on it two weeks ago before I even heard that the NES Classic was being discontinued.  I wanted to show some alternatives since the Classic was so darned hard to find.  And so this seems to be well timed with the discontinuation.

I also had two other videos I was working on before this one, but they both ended up having to be shelved for a while due to waiting on parts.   Anyway, I ho...

VIC-20 Super Expander and EPROM programmer

OK, so back to some more traditional content for a while.  I'm interested to see what people think of this sort of content, because I do have a lot of little, less-exciting, things like this I'd love to show off.  So I hope they don't turn out to be too boring or anything.  And since many of these little items aren't going to be interesting enough for entire videos devoted to them, I may do more like this one where I show two or three things in a video.  Let me know what you ...
