OK - CHANGE OF PLAN

Hi there.

Some of you might have noticed that (once again), the 65LABS Patreon unpaused itself and we didn't catch it in time to hit pause again before it rolled over into October.

This was accidental on our part, but to be honest, this inadvertent subscription heist is very useful in helping to balance out the ongoing server costs that keep the Wreckage Systems stream ticking along. And that was our original goal of this whole project, right?...

PRESSING PAUSE ON 65LABS

HI FRIENDS.

A bit of a different update from 65LABS this month. The short version is: we'll be hitting pause on our Patreon again. You're not going to be charged next month. Take that fiver and go live your best life, on us!

BUT WHY?

After some months of trying to kick this particular project up a gear, we have decided that, for various reasons, it is what is known as 'not a goer'. As much as we appreciate this very-direct, material supp...

Dev Blog June 2024

Hi there friends.

2024 is hurtling by, huh? The longest day already behind us. You can almost taste the winter of our continuing discontent on the breeze. Or is that the taste of 'change' finally coming to the UK?

No. It's definitely discontent.

But! The sun's out. Make it count. This month the technicians of 65LABS have been stumbling around as much as they are able to given the realities of their workplace being an obscure, experimental, mostly-asp...

Devblog May 2024

Hi friends.

Development at 65LABS continues apace!

Admittedly, this month the development was more in the minds of our technicians than out here in the material plane, but it still counts!

Last month it was an exploding bass amplifier getting in the way. This month it was a spontaneously combusting Elektron Octatrack that once again complicated things. An Octatrack is a kind of 'performance-based sampler', as you will see in this month's video, and it h...

Hi Friends.

Development continues at 65LABS. This month, switching on our bass amplifier blew the power not just to our studio, but the entire lower level of the building. A selfless sacrifice of the bass amp, offering itself up as the perfect metaphor for our current plight. Or, let's be honest, all of our plights in general.

Concerning last month's update: ...

Meet Me by the Panamax Barricades

Hi friends!

Just a quick one to let you know that offical 65LABS technician Polinski has a new record out today.

It's called Meet Me by the Panamax Barricades and it is full of that glitchy, sonic skittering you have come to know and hopefully love.

Return of the 65LABS Devblog - March 2024

So for the last few months we have been working on prototyping a new project for 65LABS. As ever, we have been trying to find that oh-so-delicate balance between creating something that:

  • Provides an honest glimpse at the realities/working processes of being in a band like us.

  • Wraps that unglamorous reality up in some hypersonic, para-social theatrics and myth-making of a 65LABS Grand Plan flavour. Because, let's be honest, the int...

THE FEBRUARY HUSTLE

It's that time again, friends! Another month down. It has actually been the busiest month for 65LABS for quite some time. We're not quite ready to share anything yet in case we abort at the last minute, but we are testing out a new idea and it seems to have legs. So cheers for sticking around and helping to keep this weirdest of dreams alive. Here are some updates for you...

JANUARY DOOM

Hi friends.

How's it going out there? January at 65LABS is usually a quiet time, given over to dour reflection and dread games. The technicians mostly stay away, which gives the maintenance skeleton crew a chance to get out the febreze and give all the workbenches and computers a once-over.

This month however, thanks to the Accountancy Wing stepping in to turn everything back on, we've yanked the Wreckage System Admins out of their cryo-sleep and led them like dop...

2024 - 65LABS IN WITH A BANG!

Happy New Year, Comrades!

The 65LABS Accounting Wing spent the holidays getting a well-earned rest on their private yachts. Sipping jewels, eating gold, floating safely in international waters. This kept them so busy that it meant they did not find time to pause the Patreon subscription for the month of January. You may have noticed that tiny little 65-shaped hand plucking approximately £5 from your life.

To be honest, it has been clear for some time that some View Post

Wild Light Decade #23 - Live in Manchester 150923

Hi Friends.

Well, we made it to the end of another 65LABS project. Twentyfiveweeksofstatic! A deeper dive than we anticipated into those heady, confusing, noisy and mostly cold days back in old 65HQ. The tale of four humans voluntarily trapping themselves in a room for a *really long time* in an effort to figure out how to write this record. We hope you have enjoyed our attempt to keep nostalgia at bay, to avoid writing our own hagiography, and instead take a look ...

Wild Light Decade INTERRUPT: Oscillator

Hiya friends.

Another Friday. Congratulations on making it this far.

No new music this week. Sorry about that, but on the other hand, you did literally get a whole album last week so we're not gonna feel too guilty.

It's been a bit of a hair-raising week at 65LABS. As we probably mentioned, when Wild Light Decade launched, we thought that it might just about take us up until the shows in September. But now it's November. The 65LABS Archival ...

Wild Light Decade #22: Prototype Album Tracklist V3

How's it going out there, friends?

Here at 65LABS, we are busy pulling this sprawling Wild Light Decade project to a neat and tidy end. We need to empty out the 65LABS Nostalgia Investigations Space so the cleaning crew can come in and give it a deep noise cleanse. We have to be careful around these Nostalgia Spaces. They're so cosy. Don't want to get too comfortable in here, you know?

So we've been dumping the old hard drives in bath tubs full of...

BLOOD - Original Score // OUT TODAY

Happy Friday! This week's Wild Light Decade post will be along shortly. It's a big one this week.

Speaking of ten year old records, I have just broken into the 65LABS PR Wing and am briefly hijacking their comms terminal to tell you that I (Paul from 65days) just released my original score to BLOOD, a solo dance piece that was choreogr...

Wild Light Decade #21: Zodiac

A short and sweet hyperbanger for you this week.

By some measurements, 65daysofstatic are pretty old. Not that you’d necessarily realise due to our handsome, youthful appearance and dexterous use of social media. But we are old like the mountains. Old like glaciers. Old like the pyramids. And we are definitely old as songwriters.

Not that getting old as songwriters necessarily means that the ideas arrive at a slower rate. It does mean though that when they arrive, they carry w...

Wild Light Decade #20: Safe Passage - Lubomyr Version

And the hits just keep on coming.

Hi friends. It's the end of another week, so here's another shovel full of Wild Light treasure glittering into your brain.

It is fair to say that 65days’ piano parts are generally not known for their subtlety. This is not our fault. The problem lies in the way pianos were originally designed - there are just so many available notes! Gotta press them all, as quickly as possible.

This being the case, it was no small feat for us to keep the o...

Wild Light Decade #19: SIRENS

Sirens like an alarm? A clarion call? Or like an enchanting, seductive, but dangerous monster? How about all three.

The end is nigh, so here we are, back at the beginning. Sirens was Sirens for a very, very long time, it’s true name only becoming apparent to us once we heard it in its final album form and understood its overall role in things. Eventually it clicked that when a song so clearly carries its sirens within and through itself, the name needn’t be quite s...

Wild Light Decade #18: AntiGravity

Something a bit different this week, explained in a way that hopefully makes sense to all the non-musicians out there…

As mentioned in an earlier post, reviving decade-old music projects is not as simple as just opening a file. Whatever DAW (digital audio workstation) you use, the chances are that a song project won't be a single file, but rather it will be made up of various moving parts. There will be the project file itself, but while this sits on your computer in the same way a ...

Wild Light Tour Changeover Mix

Ever since 65daysofstatic has been a band, we have been doing cut-ups, unofficial remixes and bootleg releases alongside writing music of our own. In the very early days these kinds of things would appear on DIY 65 CDRs alongside our 'proper' songs. But then we started working with actual record labels, who were keen to remind us that copyright is a thing and who didn't really wanna get sued for the sake of some weird noise band from Sheffield.

So we shifted our penchant for adding arti...

Wild Light Decade #17: Throwbacks

Short and sweet update this week, coming to you from a rain-soaked car park at the back of a giant arena on the outskirts of Paris.

We are parked here because the streets around the venue we are actually playing in are far too narrow for the bus to get in there. So instead we get to unload all the gear, load it into a small van, and then unload it again into the venue. And then do it in reverse later. The pouring rain really spices things up too.

Anyway. Throwbacks. A tig...

Wild Light Decade #16: Sleepwalk City Live Installation

Special one for you this week. In the summer of 2013, ahead of the release of Wild Light, we were lucky enough to get a space at Millenium Galleries, Sheffield to do whatever we wanted inside of, as part of Tramlines Festival.

We even got a budget, like actual artists, and spent all of it on hiring as many speakers as we could. Then, in a insult to acoustic engineers everywhere, we li...

Wild Light Decade #15: Doxxx Yrself

Doxxx Yrself. The best bonus track we ever wrote? Maybe. Are 65daysofstatic conflicted about it because of all the arguments with the label about bonus tracks getting added onto the end of Wild Light? Nah... Although we probably were, once upon a time. Not because of the track itself, but because of its role in the general release of Wild Light.

We get it - people listen to playlists and shuffles more than entire albums these days. And that's great. Whatever m...

Wild Light Decade #14: Tunnels

Tunnels. Before it reached its ultimate title, Tunnels began as Tunnels. You'll recognise it as soon as it begins. This song is/was a pretty ambitious composition and it took us a really long time to write. You can tell it took ages because, when you listen to this recording, you will hear that the general level of production is pretty high compared to some of the other demos we have shared during this project, and yet it is still significantly different to the fina...

Wild Light Decade #13: PRISMS - fresh approach

This week's drop is a Wild Light heavyweight: Prisms.

Wild Light Decade #10: Domo Arrrrrigato - April2012

Another Friday, another excavation from the Wild Light dig site. Another dust-covered and tattered sonic skeleton, fossilised in decade-old ones and zeros.

This week it’s something called Domo Arrrrrigato - April2012. It consists of a pretty catchy melody trapped in a coffin of dead-end songwriting. This is the kind of recording that would not usually be shared outside of 65HQ. It is a very rough and somewhat exploratory recording. Although it sounds like we’ve got...

Wild Light Decade #08: Taipei (Studio Demo)

Oh, Taipei...

Back in 2011, we were lucky enough to be able to go to Taiwan to play some shows. Due to a quirk of touring travel logistics and festival scheduling that would have normally been insurmountable, the only way for us to make the shows work was to account for three off-days between our Taiwan shows. The cost of these days - crew wages and hotel rooms - would have be entirely impossible for us to cover. But rather than have to cancel the whole trip, our wonderful crew at the t...
