[Weekly Update] March 28, 2022

Waited for the Oscar so I can make this update. Didn't expect to be using this update image, though. But I mean, it is the only news people seem to care about. And it's probably the only thing people remember from this year's Oscar.

CHANNEL UPDATE

  • Next video is coming along slowly but surely. I do wish I have a bit more time to develop the idea, but hopefully it's not bad as a prove of concept.

[Polls] Monster Movie Summer!

Alright, it's time to decide what monster movies we'll cover this summer! Instead of the usual Godzilla fair, however, we'll take a look at some of the more unknown Kaiju and Tokusatsu. If you have anything to suggest, leave it in the comment!

This is a multiple choice poll, so vote ALL the options you like!

New MonsterVerse movie is reportedly in production. Looks like we'll have an encore!

CHANNEL UPDATE

  • Sorry for the lack of update for last week. We are working on a big project, and you'll get to see it soon! It want to keep everything a surprise, so I won't go into detail now. For that reason, we'll put the script previews on halt for now.
  • This month's Patreon bonus video is also in the work. We'll be talking about Spider-Man No Way Home. You know, it's the third ...

[Episode] Chinese Canadian Critic Reviews Turning Red | Video Essay

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I've been busy working on a rather complicated project, and you'll get to see it pretty soon. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this quick and simple video, in which I explain my thoughts on the much anticipated Pixar movie: Turning Red.

Things will be back to normal this Sunday!

[Episode] Leslie Cheung & Hong Kong LGBT Cinema

18 minutes, this is one of the longest video on our channel, and it still feels like it barely scratched the surface. Maybe in the future, we can do an encore and take a look at his singing career and his other film roles, as well.

Hopefully, this video is a good introduction for Leslie to those of you who are unfamiliar, and a good overview of Hong Kong's LGBT cinema for those of you who know of his legacy. Cheers!

[Weekly Update] March 6, 2022

Welcome to March! Movies are getting fun again. Uncharted is apparently pretty enjoyable, can't say I see that coming. The Batman is getting some buzz. But the film is kinda a hit or miss among my snobby filmmaker friends. Turning Red is coming out in a few days. A lot of movies to catch up, a lot of fun to be had.

CHANNEL UPDATE

  • Editing on our next video is complete. It took an extra week of work because it is 18 minutes long and it covers a lot of films. And even then, I...

Spring is starting for many of us. Hopefully the change of season treats you well. As for me, I have to endure two more months of snow. Oh, Montreal.

CHANNEL UPDATE

  • Our next video is getting pretty big. I've been spending the past week watching Leslie Cheung movies and other Hong Kong LGBT films non-stop, and I'm still not done with the catalogue. It seems like I'll have to delay the video for a few days. But I think it'll be worth it.

Is anyone following the Oscar? I used to watch it with my filmmaking friends and make a drinking game out of it. I supposed we mostly enjoy it ironically. But then Covid happened and  we don't hang out much anymore.

Maybe I'll watch the Razzies this year. They have an entire category dedicated only to Bruce Willis.

[Episode] Big Trouble in Little China: Offensive or Not? | Video Essay

It may seem like a clickbait title, but I'm asking this question for real. If this movie were to come out today, people would've been very offended. But, we all love the movie! What makes us approach this film, and so many similar movies differently than recent films like... Raya?

  • Due to difficulty in acquiring Malaysian films, we have to postpone the video to a later date. So the video will probably be in March or late April.

[Episode] Hi, Mom & Chinese Nostalgia | Video Essay

Happy Lunar New Year!

I want to cover something light and heartfelt for new year, and I suppose there is no better choice than last year's new year hit, and one of my favourite films from 2021: Hi, Mom.

To put it simply, Hi, Mom is a movie about a time-traveling daughter befriending her mom in 1981. It's a fun little movie that feels deeply personal to the writer-director, as well as to the rest of China. For this reason, Hi, Mom became a huge hit. It overtook highly anticipated s...

Look, we all have to take solace somewhere. Anyway, happy Lunar New Year!

CHANNEL UPDATE

  • Our new year video is currently being edited. In case you are curious, we'll be talking about Hi, Mom (2021). It's a film I highly recommend giving a watch. Although without a wide release, the only legal way to watch it is through ixigua.com. Hopefully the film will get a wide release soon. View Post

Lunar New Year is this February 1st!

If you are celebrating it, happy new year! It's definitely difficult to celebrate a reunion festival in the pandemic. Hopefully many of you still get to visit your loved ones. And if you can't, I hope you still treat yourself to a nice celebratory meal.

And if you don't celebrate the new year. Well, you are invited to my Chinese New Year. So use that as an excuse to have a nice and relaxing night! We'll have some movie recommendations. More on ...

[Episode] Learning From Ireland's Bad Kung Fu Movie | Video Essay

Fatal Deviation has become a cult classic over the past decade or so. It's frequently made fun of on YouTube, by various comedy channels. But few has ever acknowledge the good side of the film: Lead actor and director, James Bennett, actually pulled off some pretty impressive moves.

But all those moves went unnoticed, because its presentation is just god awful. So let's take a deep dive into this movie, and see why this movie looks bad, and how we can improve it.

We are entering the dead month of cinema, when nothing interesting is coming out in the west.

It's also in between New Year and Chinese New Year, so almost everything interesting is coming out in China, soon. Although looking through the movie forecast, it's almost all war movies and cartoons.

Still looking forward to seeing a new Zhang Yimou movie though.

[Episode] When Hollywood Speaks Chinese, I Cringe | Video Essay

Ever since I brought up this topic on social media, the subject has been bubbling in the back of my mind. It's a topic few have discussed. Hopefully, I've made it interesting for you.

On this topic, I can only offer my limited perspective as a Chinese speaker. But I know Hollywood treats almost everything non-English equally terribly. So how has your language been treated?

And so we come to the end of yet another difficult year. Thank you all for the continuing support. It is because of you that this channel is not only thriving, but looking into expanding.

[Episode] Stand by Me Doraemon: A Loser's Guide to Life | Video Essay

Finally, we are talking about Doraemon, a cornerstone of anime in Asia, childhood to billions of young children over the past 50+ years. And somehow, it remains relatively unknown in the west.

Since the two films highlighted don't have a strong through line (it's more like small vignettes connected together), it's pretty difficult to talk about the film on a whole. So the video was written with the assumption that you know the films already. For this reason, I'd recommend watching the f...
