[Episode] A Horror Film With Fate as the Antagonist

For this Halloween, I have a recommendation. A bit silly, a bit gory, and surprisingly deep, Mad Fate is one of the few horror films coming out of Hong Kong that is genuinely great. In this video, I'll explain some of the cultural backgrounds, and talk about what to expect from this film.

Currently, the film is still going around various film festivals, so there is a chance it is still in your local theatres. Check it out if that's the case!

[Weekly Update]

Wow, the new Patreon design looks kinda bad.

WEEKLY UPDATE

Welcome to the last quarter of 2023, and here is what we have on the docket for the rest of the year.

First, we have our Halloween video on the Hong Kong horror/thriller Mad Fate. It's a great movie, one of the best from Hong Kong in recent years. There is a chance it is still in theatres outside of Hong Kong, so take a look if you are into horror movies! The video is being edited and should be up in...

[Poll] Choose a video topic for this Christmas

It has been a while! Since I've completely ran out of Christmas movies for this holiday season, let's make something you'll enjoy instead. Here are the options:

  • Miami Connection and DIY Kung Fu Movies: Back when Kung Fu film was all the rage, many actors and filmmakers saw it as an opportunity to cash-in. The result is a tsunami of uber low budget kung fu and colourful ninja movies. They are cheap. They are bad. And they are a lot of fun.

So, my "office" is in the basement, which I shared with a roommate that is a spider. I have never met the little guy, but everyday I'd find new spider webs on the window sill.

That's the anecdote of the week.

Hope you enjoyed our last video on Rush Hour 3! It was loads of fun revisiting the film, despite the blemishes.

Originally, I wanted to talk about some of the racist jokes in the film, and talk about why they work. Upon revisiting t...

[Episode] 6 Reasons Why Rush Hour 3 is Bad (And Why I Still Like It) | Video Essay

A bit different from the usual films we covered on this channel, but not a surprise pick. Rush Hour has been a big part of my formative years, and it's only right I cover it some day. Maybe one day, I'll dive into more of the film's racial commentary and cultural aspects. But there are also a few channels that did that. So for now, let's talk about the black sheep that few have talked about on YouTube!

[Episode] What Did Chinese Millennials Grow Up Watching

So here is a video that's much more personal than my usual stuff. Today, the cinema going experience is fairly similar in most places. We all go to a multiplex, and a few dozen people all share a big screen with surround sound. But that wasn't always the case. Back in the 90s, films were still being projected in theater halls in Mainland China. And in this video, I share some of my memories from that period.

Apparently Patreon now has a community chat function. But since we already have a discord server, it's somewhat redundant.

We are shifting the schedule around a bit, so I can catch up. That means our next three videos will be about: (1) My childhood cinema experience (2) A review of Rush Hour 3 (3) Possibly a r...

[Weekly Update] Ads in movies

Before we start, I have a quick update on the channel's ad status. For a long time, we held off on showing you unskippable ads and mid-roll ads. Starting this November, however, YouTube will take away this control. Meaning that you'll likely see more ads from our channel (or on YouTube in general). YouTube clarified that we still have control over the timing of mid-roll ads, but it's unclear if we can turn of just the mid-rolls, or if there's only a single on-off switch for all ads. It's asin...

It's the end of an era, as after this one, there'll be no other bad Chinese movies nearly as influential for me to talk about.

[Episode] Dangal: How an Indian Film Captivated China

Finally, it's out! I've wanted to talk about this film for the longest time. This was actually among the first Indian movies I've ever seen (yes, I know, I'm uncultured). And it was quite an impression indeed.

For this video, I kept the spoilers to a minimum, but I still suggest you give the film a go first. I have heard many people telling me how they were blown away by it. So, give it a go!

[Weekly Update] I'm sick + Sick Day Movies

Just a quick health update: You may have noticed I didn't post a new video or post our script this week. That's because I've been feeling sick for the past week. [Episode] McDull & Memories of Hong Kong | Video Essay

In a way, I think the release of McDull marks the beginning of the post-2000s Hong Kong cinema. Movies made in Hong Kong became much more interested in domestic topics. Gone were the days of international action stars. Hong Kong movies became something dedicated to only an Hong Kong audience.

That, of course, doesn't mean the films cannot be enjoyed by other people. In fact, I think this direction offers a great opportunity to see the city from a distance. If you have an interest in the...

[Weekly Update] I Hate Modern TVs

I don't know if anyone beside me care about this. Microsoft has changed the default Office font from Calibri to Aptos. And I have to say, it's... not my favourite. Not that Calibri is all that pretty to begin with, but the small aperture of the letterings (The holes in the "R" "a" "e"), plus the double-storey "g" just makes the whole thing less legible than Google Open and Helvetica.

I do like that the lower case "l" has a curve, though. Helps with dyslexia.

[Episode] The Impact of Tony Jaa | Video Essay

There are no video essays on Tony Jaa on YouTube. Not even reviews. Can you believe it!?

Tony Jaa was a sensation back in the 2000s. I distinctly remember an interview with Donnie Yen, who was either promoting SPL or Flash Point on a TVB variety show. In it, Yen directly says he was motivated upon seeing Jaa's popularity. He said: "Why can't we do that? It's not like we can't fight!"

We did it, everyone. We made the video about capitalism.

This is a question I wondered about for a long time. What's in Fast & Furious that made the franchise so successful in China? Is it because everyone's muscle reminds people of Arnold? Is it because it's the most stereotypical American cars and guns movie?

But then, my friends told me their reason, and it doesn't come from within the movie.

This video may be hard to watch because it dunks on many people's childhood, including my own.
