[D'sP] Gah! - Chapter 406

Tess glares down the path, “Yes, we can get fire resistant leather, but at what cost?”

Kellinger, “I feel that even without armor, we should be able to handle the heat.”

Jim shakes his head, “If I was afraid of the fire, we would have turned around before we even entered. Well, I would have sent him”, and he points over his shoulder at Jeremy, “To do a quick scouting run.

“The problem I see is with the physical aspects. These aren’t classical imps with weak...

[D'sP] Two Buffs - Chapter 405

Kelly nods, “I’ve got a spell that should protect against fire magic. I theorize that depending on the enemies personal level and skill level compared against your own personal level, but happening before any resistance skills, the spell should bell curve centered on about 25% reduction at parity.”

Jeremy raises an eyebrow, “That bell curve based on the level comparison or the percentage? I’m assuming the first as the second would be stupid.”

Kelly, “Ah, yeah, it can...

[NR] Why No Preparation? - Chapter 649

After their chat, Jenny doesn’t stay long. She is technically still on the clock, after all. Got to get that information! Jason was certain other companies his mom had worked for or applied at are all green with envy, even if her current place would not be getting all that much. Just the fact his method came about because of using Energy and knowing about the lines early on.

Now alone in the house, Jason settles down in the living room to meditate and cultivate. The meditation goes fi...

[NR] You Come Out Regularly - Chapter 648

After his talk with the others, Jason goes back into his house and logs out. While there was stuff to do in NeoRealm, such a major change that had affected his “self” to such a deep extent in there, likely had some effect on him irl as well. Except, when he got out, Jason was in for a shock. Mom was home.

Jenny laughed at his expression when he went into the living room. “Weren’t expecting that, were you?”

Jason frowns, “You knew I would be coming out?”

Jenny r...

Author's Note: On Banished Talent

Heyo! I just finished a final personal edit of the Banished Talent and so it is now as complete as I can manage on my own. I’ve even gone and made a rough ebook version. I could, in theory, throw the ebook up on Amazon and start selling the book right this moment. However, there are at a minimum two and up to four steps that need done before I would consider doing that.

The two steps I will do before putting the ebook up for sale on any site, are registering the copyright and buying a...

[Closed] Deciding the Short Story Prompt for November 2024

Below are the full prompts as the poll doesn't allow the full text. In the case of ties the first option that got there wins. The short story will be finished by the end of the month.

  • A flight across an ocean. Fantastic in nature. A couple fleeing from trouble back home. To supposed green pastures ahead. The sky whale they have taken passage on is attacked by pirates mid journey. The pirates fly using giant white ravens as mounts.

  • The System, created by a now exti...

[D'sP] Tough Trees - Chapter 404

The hexku hit Jeremy and Jay. Neither are shield users, but they manage it. Jay has it easiest because he is using a poleaxe and with a spin, the first few birds are rebuffed. Jeremy, on the other hand, is using a pair of long daggers.

He does a phenomenal job of it, though. The daggers dance through the air, one turns a bird and the other follows up to fully redirect it into another monster. All the while the tips flash as they leave precise cuts at delicate points. If Jay was using th...

[NR] Maybe He's A Ghost! - Chapter 647

Jason walked out of his house and paused. The sky had veins. It wasn’t terribly obvious and he would have likely overlooked it if he wasn’t specifically on the lookout for any changes in his sight.

Almost like the shimmer of air over hot sand, except unmoving, they extended deeper into the Deep Wilds. Though his view was limited, even with the little he could see, it was clear that the veins narrowed. This must be either part of how the System grabs pieces of the Deep Wilds for NeoR...

[NR] Stat Growth - Chapter 646

As the tail of the last System strings vanishes, a silence falls over Jason’s inner world. It was like when you’ve been in a room with a fan so long you no longer notice it only for the fan to shut off. Not that there had been a sound, but the System must have had some sort of signal that played on the strings.

That or Jason had some wires crossed and another feeling had been coming across as a hum. It might even have been a sensation with no human analog. Whatever the case, it thre...

[Closed] Collecting Short Story Prompts for November 2024

Once again I'm here to ask all of you for short story prompts! I'll take the more popular ones as decided by the number of hearts (or that I particularly like) in the comments and make a poll at the start of the month. The winner will be made into a short story of a thousand or so words.

Not many rules on what you can suggest at the moment. That will mostly be figured out as we go. Besides that, the short story will come out before the end of the next month.

Rules for prompts:

[Short Story] Sub-System Meets Humanity

One day, the System arrived on Earth. Well, not The System. Rather, A sub-system. Still a part of the System and not some person raised to power. However, it did have a personality all of its own so as to wield the power that it did. At the high levels, power is more about forcing your will upon the world directly and that sort of needs a will in the first place.

There was, of course, the usual bellyaching by the locals. You give them magic and a path to immortality, and they complain a...

[D'sP] The Arrow Shattered - Chapter 403

Jim turns away from where the group detected a threat and towards the next island. “Well, do we just leave those be and work our way towards the obvious goal?”

Kelly, “It would probably be good to get an idea of what threads might be in the water, so right now while we’re the active party wouldn’t be the worst idea.”

Jim sighs, “I’m not going to force anyone to do this. So, are there any volunteers to poke the bear?”

The group looks back and forth, but no o...

[D'sP] Meaning Of A Point In A Stat - Chapter 402

Doyle can’t really say anything to add on to Ally’s point and so they turn back to Jim’s party. They’re getting so close to delving into new depths. Floor 14 is one of the floors involved with when they got pushed back and so while not a bottleneck anymore, they have more respect for the floor than 13. Though it probably helps that 13 just slapped them pretty hard as well.

There was one new twist on Jim’s side. This whole delve “from the start” thing has been an attempt to...

[NR] Below A Concept - Chapter 645

Jason sat with his legs crossed and felt the darkness settle over him. It was time to put to use the basement and potentially end up having to respawn for a second time. The System threads would be gone.

As with so many times before, Jason sank into himself and focused on his oft abused pinky. Then with a deft stab of his own Energy, the pinky string almost seems to shatter as the threads that had made it are released. Behind this, Jason pulls upon his own Energy and cultivation, grabbi...

[NR] X, But Y - Chapter 644

Well, “clear” might have been a bit of an exaggeration. However, the marks that were left did the job and Jason could cut out the shape close enough that it would fit like a glove. Satisfied, he spent an entire week laying out the Energy gathering ritual using chalk.

Yes, he did want to do things without such assistance, but the slab took more effort than he was willing to throw away because of a bad bit of layout and design. Besides, once marked it took him barely an afternoon to f...

[D'sP] Punt The Goat - Chapter 401

Doyle watches as the party argues back and forth about Daisy for a bit, but soon enough they’re continuing their delve.

This brings them to the first boss floor. Which surprisingly, at least to Doyle, wasn’t a complete curb stomp. The kobold’s put up a semi decent fight and it isn’t like they’ve all been there for a long time training. People from out-of-town show up regularly and have to go through the early floors. Which also means that Doyle knows the kobolds don’t go thi...

[NR] Hands On - Chapter 643

Jason’s basement had been a bit of a pain during reconstruction. In the end, he had to fill it in and re-dig the thing after compacting the soil. Now, though, it was time to finish it.

Which does not begin with the ritual. Rather, Jason has to remove his house’s floor. The planks are stacked up under one of the drying areas, revealing the open hole that is his basement. Though it wasn’t a simple rectangle. Along the sides are square spaces built into the wall.

Jason goes ove...

[NR] Some Is More Than None - Chapter 642

Before the ley line could fully sink beneath the ground, the walls catch it. Their physical reinforcement ritual directly pulls on the Energy. It isn’t enough to keep the ley line in the state of erupting, but Jason hadn’t wanted it to, anyway.

The three Energy gathering rituals in harmony had simply been the only method Jason possessed to draw up this small thread of the world’s life force. However, once surfaced it was much easier to manipulate. In this case, the draw of the rei...

[D'sP] The System Shouldn't Do That - Chapter 400

Besides the actual implements though, mithril was a bit of a one-trick pony. The trick was very useful, mind you, but allowing mystical energies to pass through easily was a double-edged sword. After all, there is nothing there saying it only lets your power through.

Mithril plates in some leather armor? Yes, it helps boost defensive skills, but at the same time weakens the armor’s resistance to stuff like spells. One particularly dangerous bit of kit was a helmet enhanced with mithri...

[D'sP] Am I Strange? - Chapter 399

Over a month has passed, but Doyle managed to finish the cliff wall. Every little bit of the wall is carved in a way to make the water flow down it in chaotic patterns. From marks large enough to use as hand holds, down to those small enough as to be invisible to the naked eye.

And as Doyle takes a mental step back and the magic of his conceptual reinforcement settles in, a pulse spreads through the entire dungeon. Good thing this causes the dungeon monsters to pause or else there would...

[NR] Bring It To The Surface - Chapter 641

Over the next month, as Rosha put it, “Jason was quite a boring boy”. Though it didn’t help that whenever the pair were around, Jason would spend all his time preparing wood for Courtney to mend while it dries. Not that the rest of the time was all that interesting, either.

He built buildings, a wall, and dug out a lake. The walls being where the dirt from the lake went. After all, while a wooden wall was nice, a good thin layer of dirt between wood was much sturdier.

He rea...

[NR] Freehand Carving - Chapter 640

Though for then to have a use for any Energy materials, Jason needs to read those manuals. Of course, all he has to do is remove the manual from the pitch black room and take it outside. Except for the fact, he decided he would make a ritual plate. After all, he has had the manual for the light ritual for a while now and hasn’t properly used it yet.

The first step is to make the plate. Since this isn’t going to be a super precise or high tier ritual, means any chunk of stone will do...

[D'sP] Been A While - Chapter 398

Ally putters around the dungeon for a little, but there isn’t really anything for her to do. Doyle had just recently automated the floors and so she didn’t even need to check in on the camera and such. That turns her attention outward.

The town was thriving, some would even call it a city. It didn’t quite have the permanent population for that. Though if only counting the average people staying the night, it would be close. Sure, counting the day time population would push it over...

[NR] Handing It Off - Chapter 638

With the original building rebuilt, Jason rushed to get as many planks and logs drying as possible. He even expanded the amount of space being used for it. Because he knew, the moment Rosha could go out again, she was taking it and Courtney would go with her.

Jason didn’t mind this, but the mend spell was simply too effective. It made preparing the wood for construction a matter of hours instead of weeks or months. So he wanted at least enough wood for their houses and maybe a couple ...

[D'sP] Cheating Themselves - Chapter 397

Doyle goes through and buys each skill and then buys them for the kobolds and elder kobolds. Which causes the system of having to buy the skills twice to make more sense. Though it also included an urge to buy as many skills for his basic monsters as possible. Not as some sort of mind control or boost to his instincts. Rather, it was the fact that the elder kobold pattern had all the skills he had previously applied to the kobold pattern. It just didn’t update to include these new skills, t...

[D'sP] She Found It - Chapter 396

Doyle takes some time to observe just what skills would likely be needed. The kobolds already had access to mining and smelting. Besides that, they needed woodworking, tanning, leatherworking, blacksmithing, charcoal burning, and of course a skill for carving runes. Though maybe that last one would need two skills. One for carving and the other for runes.

As Doyle ponders on the skills, Ally suddenly shouts. ‘I found it! Hahaha!’

Then she notices she said that out loud. ‘Uh,...

[NR] Stomp The Ground - Chapter 637

As much as it pained him, Jason needed to add some deeply sunk posts to build around. Which meant at the corners he was going to have to dig up the gravel and drill a hole in the compacted dirt. Also, if he just sticks a log or square post into the ground, it probably won’t survive all that well.

The problem is that he doesn’t really have anything to treat the wood with. Then again, they don’t plan to stay here for long enough for it to truly matter. Though there is one Jason thin...

[NR] Rebuilding - Chapter 636

Whatever the case might be with the wood drying too quickly, it could only benefit them. Though Courtney’s repair spell was MVP, correcting any splitting or warping. This did mean Jason ended with a lot more planks than he had been expecting.

With his honestly quite amateur setup, Jason had expected at least a third of the planks would become unusable for construction. Not that he was going to toss those out or anything. More than enough bits and bobs that could be made from such thin...
