Hi Everyone,
Just another heads up regarding course upgrades and the survey results. After quite a bit of market research and many (many!) Zoom calls, some behind-the-scenes improvements and overhauls are underway. There will be more concrete announcements about this in the next 1-2 months, but just wanted to let you all know.
While I will continue making and posting course content during this time period, there is a lot of work going on under the hood, so communication f...

Hi everyone,
Just a quick note -- I've updated the multiple shift (practice) video to include an additional technique (which will be used in the trick this month). The new section in the video begins at 7:23.

This month, we'll be learning a classic plot in magic: The Collectors. This 'category' of trick encompasses routines where the four aces trap three selected cards between them (kind of like an upgraded sandwich effect). Some versions of this plot involve the selected cards magically appearing between the aces, whereas others are a skill demonstration where the selected cards are precisely shuffled into the aces. This handling is an example of the latter approach, and uses some interesting Far...

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to provide (another) quick update on the course!
As I mentioned previously, it's started to outgrow the "101" title given the advanced topics we've been covering.
I sent out a survey recently to get some feedback from existing members (thanks to everyone who filled it out). The responses confirmed my specific intentions to grow and improve the course going forward, and I appreciate the many suggestions you all provided, some of which may get imple...

The practice behind the multiple shift techniques. The "riffle force" multiple shift was invented by Norm Houghton, and is often referred to as a 'bluff' multiple shift in the literature.
PRACTICE DRILLS:
Since these are individual techniques related only in concept, just practice them each in isolation. I would recommend starting by controlling just 2 cards with a multiple shift. Then work up to 3, 4, and even 5 (but any more than that is unnecessary for magic tricks). You can also...

This month, we're going to learn techniques that allow you to control multiple cards all at once. For example, you'll be able to insert the aces into different parts of the deck, and with one cut or shuffle, bring all of them to the top. While there are many multiple shifts in the literature, there are only 2-3 of them that you'll ever end up using, and those are what I cover here. Specifically, they are: the Hindu shuffle multiple shift, the swing cut multiple shift (also known as the Neal E...

Hi Everyone,
I have (another) exciting update to share about the course. Originally, when this course was created about 4 years ago (time flies!), the goal was to create a guided curriculum for learning sleight-of-hand from the ground up. There was intentionally very little "community" aspect aside from some discord channels where people could ask basic questions.
However, now that the course has grown and people have made considerable progress, I think it would be a more complete...

This month, we'll be learning a powerhouse gambling routine by Dai Vernon: the Vernon Poker deal! We have learned a 'baby' version of this trick before, called Double Duke Dealer. The original Vernon routine allows you to (apparently) stack many different poker hands to all the players, but you win with an unexpected royal flush. It makes for an excellent closer to any set of mostly (or entirely) card material.
This coming week, we'll learn the "practice" of this routine.
The sub...

The practice behind the various slug controls.
PRACTICE DRILL:
By combining the tools I teach in the video, work out (for yourself) how to accomplish the following sequence:
Begin with the 4 aces on top and the 4 kings on the bottom. Riffle, Riffle, Strip Cut, Riffle, Cut. At the end, the 4 aces are on top and the 4 kings are on the bottom.
For an additional challenge, try the same thing, but the cut at the end has to be a real cut (i.e. not a base cut). Hint: you may ...

This month we will be learning some advanced slug and stock controls. Previously, the approach was basically: leave the required cards on top (or on the bottom) during a riffle shuffle, and then do a full deck false cut. But far more nuanced techniques exist for keeping the 4 aces on top (or on the bottom), and there are subtleties to the shuffling techniques we've already learned. We're now getting into legitimate card table sleight-of-hand, which is a new chapter (both literally and figurat...

Hi Everyone,
I just wanted to pass along an exciting update about the course. Given the type of material coming up soon, I figured I'd share some thoughts on where the course is at now and where it will go in the future.
When I began creating this course about 4 years ago (it took a few months to film and edit the core curriculum), the goal was to focus on the basics and, as I've said in past videos, the "highest value" techniques. I define value as "usefulness" divided by "diffic...

This month, we'll be learning a quick but very strong routine from the great Harry Lorayne. Numero Uno is a fantastic opener trick for almost any setting, whether it's strolling magic, close up, parlor...even stage! I also include an optional second phase that makes the routine very impressive. It's also a great trick to practice hitting a breather crimp, since if you miss, it's fine to 'try again' due to the presentation.
This coming week, we'll learn the "practice" of this routine.

The techniques for putting crimps into cards and then locating them in the deck. You will need to practice each type of crimp on its own, so the only "practice drill" is to repeatedly shuffle the crimp into the deck, sight where it is (for corner crimps, at least), and then try to cut to it accurately in a decisive motion.

This month, we're going to learn techniques that allow you to crimp (i.e. slightly bend) certain cards in the deck. We will cover different crimps with different use cases, and then also discuss how to put the work in, take the work out (when possible), how to cut to each kind of crimp, and all the various applications. Crimps are an incredibly powerful tool that can eliminate the need to hold breaks during certain tricks, allowing for a much more "hands off" procedure. You can even let the a...
