“There Is Nothing Like the Dames” (February 17, 1990)
Believe it or not, Mama’s Family has a deeply queer history. While the final result of it — the syndicated revival that returned to TV after NBC canceled the it — bears little of that, this episode goes over all the ways a recurring sketch on The Carol Burnett Show originally told the story of a queer-coded artist who can’t relate to his family back home. It’s all the stranger to consider that Mama’s Family never did ...

Hi, all. Today we launched the new issue of Beyond Sunset, the comics anthology project Glen and I do with our friend Josh Trujillo, whom you will likely be hearing on the podcast in the not-too-distant future. This is a very different sort of project that this podcast, but I'm reall...

You know the drill. Give us a suggestion in the comments below. Poll goes up later this week. Winning suggestion is the topic for our Patreon-only bonus show.
(Recording this one next week because Glen chose to be in Florida. HE CHOSE THIS FOR HIMSELF.)
Prompt: scary/spooky. Interpret however you'd like.

“Cougars” (November 29, 2007)
As comedically successful as it might be, 30 Rock is a very straight show. That’s why our best pick for a queer episode is one where the sexually interesting narrative is the C plot and it ends with Judah Friedlander’s Frank convincing himself he can’t like guys because he doesn...

You know the drill! Suggest a movie we should cover this month for GEE Movie Club. Next week you all can vote for which suggestion you want most. There's a catch, though: you can only suggest one movie. If you suggest more than one movie, I'll only accept the last one you suggest. So... suggest strategically, I guess.
SUGGESTIONS ARE DUE BY NOON ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 25!

“Stealing Nikki” (November 26, 2000)
Go figure: It’s our longest episode yet, and it’s about a show you might not even remember.
We were fortunate enough to get Talking Simpsons co-host Henry Gilbert back for a second go-around, and we decided to make use of his encyclopedic knowledge of professional wrestling. Lucky for us, there is in fact a sitcom that discusses pro wrestling and queerness in the same ...

“My Hair Lady” (February 15, 2004)
Welcome to season five of Gayest Episode Ever! True, season don’t really mean anything on this kind of podcast, but we are back from our summer hiatus and we’re super eager to get back into talking sitcom queerness.
We’re kicking off this season with our fourth look at King of the Hill. It’s an interesting one in that it has (presumably) straight writer Wyatt Cenac telling a story about Bill pretending to be gay, yet it’s pretty wel...

This month’s patron-selected topic would be more appropriately decided with a long-running podcast than a single one-off bonus episode, but here it is anyway: Drew and Glen both offer pics for games that could be considered the gayest ever, along with a short history of LGBTQ+ representation in games. It’s loose and conversational, but you might learn something and you’ll probably find a reason to tell us we’re wrong about some niche subject.
Supplemental material:
Hi all. I have some news, and then I want your opinion about it.
We are, as of today, officially partnering with Spaces, a new queer app that is sponsoring our episodes through the end of the year. It's a little like Discord, but our pages on it — one for GEE and one for 2022-09-01 20:34:20 +0000 UTC

“The Laughing Dragon” (September 19, 1985)
Here we are, at the last installment of Cartoons That Made Us Gay — for this season, anyway. Since the kickoff of this bonus series was about He-Man, it only made sense to bookend it with She-Ra. And although this is a very gay episode of She-Ra, it’s not one that explores the lesbian subtext of the original series, which the Netflix reboot brought to the forefront in a big way. In fact, we’re asking you, our loyal listeners, to tell ...

Due to some last minute scheduling stuff, we had to rush this one, so apologies if we didn't get to some of your responses. However, we hope this exploration of the 1987 nostalgia souffle that is Summer School will help you realize what a superior teen movie this really is. Even Kirstie Alley is good!
Have a great remaining few days of summer!

Hi all. The movie Glen and I picked for this month is 1987's SUMMER SCHOOL! Which stars Kirstie Alley at the height of her powers and before she dedicated herself to sucking and which is directed by none other than Carl Reiner!

Vote for one. This month, we'll pick from the top two vote-getters as for which one we'll do... unless it's a blow out, in which case we basically have to do that one. Voting ends next Monday!
If you don't see your suggestion in this poll, I probably skipped it because we've already done it or because you were suggesting that we do a specific movie or TV show, and that's what the main podcast / GEE movie club is for?

Hi all. One of the projects I've been working on in the hiatus is remaking the GEE website, so it's cleaner, clearer and easier to use. Among the additions is a new spreadsheet showing every episode we've ever done. When I'm looking at it in Google Spreadsheets, I can sort columns so I can, for example, put every episode in order according to its original TV airdate. However, in the version I've embedded on the above URL, I can't figure out how to preserve that functionality.

“Moon Over Minerva” (October 28, 1993)
Deemed too sexy for TV, Minerva Mink was the least-utilized of the Animaniacs recurring characters. And that’s too bad, because having a female character like this is a nice way to fix the problem of the total lack of female representation in the original Looney Tunes. We do spend a good chunk of time looking at all the ways Looney Tunes descendants and spinoffs have attempted to add female characters to the mix, but if we’re being honest, ...

“Feat of Clay,” parts one and two (September 8 and 9, 1992)
When it comes to Batman: The Animated Series, there are likely a lot gayer characters who come to mind before Clayface. However, we argue that the two-part introduction of Matt Hagen to the Diniverse is a very queer story, about a vain actor whose self-worth is tied to his handsome face and whose need for a public-facing career makes him abuse the only man who truly cares for him. And that’s even before turning him into a...

“Phil’s Assertion School (September 23, 1977)
Sanford Arms was NBC’s attempt to continue the world of Sanford and Son without either Sanford or the Son. It didn’t work, and of the eight episodes produced, only four ever aired. That said, its second ever installment not only introduced a gay character but also it became the first black cast sitcom to ever do a gay episode with a gay character. So while this attempt at a Sanford spinoff didn’t work, it still landed its place in ...

“Mandora: The Evil-Chaser” (September 20, 1985)
Just looking at the character designs for this show, it’s easy to see where things go really gay. However, Glen has chosen the tenth episode of Thundercats to do for this series because it introduces Mandora, an iconic 80s cartoon character who will read a few different ways, depending on who you are and how you think this character is commenting on gender roles. Whichever way you toss the boomerang, she’s got rad style.

“Roomie for Improvement” (November 4, 1992)
Al Borland is not gay. This episode makes a point of saying that he is a heterosexual, despite how many of his (comparatively) immasculine qualities might indicate otherwise. However for some, Richard Karn’s sensitive flannel man is an example of a kind of guy some of us would grow up to like and some of us would grow up to be: big, bearded, and free to be ourselves regardless of where on the gender spectrum we ended up being. 2022-06-22 23:23:08 +0000 UTC
