Game Boy Works episode 100!?

Yep, sure enough. That's two zeroes. Huh.

Lots going on here despite the fact that it's been a while since my last video upload. I've been working on building up a backlog of videos over the past few weeks, and I'm still working on getting together a patron-exclusive video plan.

It's been nearly four years since I kicked off Game Boy Works (or World, if you prefer). Thanks to everyone who has supported this venture, whether for a few days or a few years! You make this poss...

Game Boy Works #099: Astro Rabby

Yes, that's right — I've already put together the next episode of Game Boy Works. Astro Rabby ended up being precisely what I had hoped it would be: A simple and thoroughly enjoyable import deep-cut for Game Boy. It's not the greatest game ever, but I really enjoyed it and had a lot to say about it… and I was so excited to write about this little gem that, well, I've already put the episode together, well in advance of the usual schedule.

On to episode 100!

Game Boy Works advances

No, not "Advances." That would be crazy. I just mean, finally, a new episode that moves forward in the Game Boy Works chronology: Episode 098, Nobunaga's Ambition. Yeah, I'm back on my proper production schedule now. Ain't that grand?

Super Mario Land remastered

Well, here we go: Super Mario Land redux. I feel like this video isn't as good as it could be, so I apologize for that. Anyway, onward and upward from here! The next game in the lineup is Nobunaga's Ambition, which frankly intimidates me, but after that the rest of this volume of Game Boy Works has a lot of stuff that intrigues me. I don't know how good stuff like Astro Rabby and The Rescue of Princess Blobette will be, but they should at lea...

Vid-e-oh-no

Hey everyone, it looks like I won't be maintaining the usual video advance posting schedule this week. I've been pretty sick the past few days and have not had the energy or concentration necessary to do any writing and recording… and I couldn't record a video script anyway, since I don't currently have much of a voice. Fortunately, I recorded the Super Mario Land redux audio a couple of weeks ago to save for a rainy day, and it's looking pretty rainy now. So that'll be along as soon ...

I'm not going to pretend to be a useful commentator on sports games, but this one is pretty OK with a friend. But ain't that always the way?

Edit: I've fixed the "next episode" segment, which Adobe Premiere inexplicably erased. THANKS ADOBE.

At last: ActRaiser

I've been waffling on this one for far too long, but hopefully I've done it justice here. Rather than belaboring the point, I'll let the video (and the game!) speak for me…

Enjoy.

Super NES Works Gaiden: The Super Nt

As previously mentioned on this very broadcast channel, this week's video project was under a timing embargo… which is odd, considering it's about the Super NES. But that's our crazy world for ya. Anyway, it's up now, and right in line with my usual weekly publishing schedule.

It'll be back to game-focused videos next week. Yes, finally, I'm tackling ActRaiser. I'll try to get a fancy Exclusive Bonus in there for you patrons as well. Thanks for bearing with me!

Game Boy Works #002 remastered

Well… I know lots of people are looking forward to the upcoming ActRaiser Super NES Works episode. I am too! But I'm going to be honest — I'm a little bit intimidated by the prospect of putting it together. It's such a great, unique, beloved game that I keep second-guessing myself on the script. I want to do the game justice, you know? But I will redouble my efforts to get it done for next week.

The week after that, things will be a little different as I'll be posting an Ana...

Streaming, posters, and other stuff

Greetings! I'm hoping to get back into streaming tomorrow — I'll be trying out some new software, since the issues that have been preventing me from streaming without audio degradation appear to have to do with software. But I'll be honest… it's been so long since I've done any streams without hiccups I'm at a bit of a loss as to what I should stream. So I'm putting it to you: Should I do more of the original Final Fantasy, or should I try something different? (And if the latter, th...

Game Boy Works #097: Oh no, it's more Gundam

Somehow my production schedule landed on two back-to-back Human/Bandai projects. First Ultraman, now this. It was nice knowing you all, but now I am dead.

On the plus side, my ghost hopes to get the kinks worked out of streaming next week, so I'll be sure to post a spectral announcement once those details firm up.

A video update

Or rather, an updated video. I went ahead and added V.O. to the coda at the end of the Ultraman episode. Seemed weird without it.

I'm at kind of a nebulous in-between space with the next episode. Review units of the Analogue Super Nt will be going out soon, and I hope to tackle that in a Super NES Works episode — but I'm not sure what the timing's going to be. So be prepared for last minutes surprises, I guess! I don't know what's happening in this crazy, mixed-up world anymore.

Super NES Works #015: Ultraman

Yeah, another episode already. I'm getting quite a ways ahead of the publishing schedule here. But that's because I suspect the next episode is going to take longer than usual to pull together… it's one of the Good Ones.

Ultraman, however, is not. I wanted to like you, clumsy brawler based on a beloved Japanese media property! But you are not very enjoyable.

Super NES Works 014: Super Bases Loaded

Back to Super NES! This brings us very nearly to the midpoint on the 1991 lineup, and I’m aiming to have that book complete this spring. Fortunately there are some very bright spots up ahead to help balance out ho-hum games like this.

Game Boy Works #001 remastered

The final Game Boy Works episode of 2017 is… the first episode of 2014. Since I'm in the process of remastering the first two books with new photos and new screenshots from fresh video capture, this seemed like a good opportunity to begin an overhaul of my very old Game Boy World videos, which definitely do not feel up to current standards. I won't be making a regular thing of these remasters, but for weeks where (for example) I'm trying to squeeze in a little time off while also buried up to ...

Super NES Works: Lucky no. 13

Mad greets, kids. Uh… I mean, hello! I'm back onto more of an optimal production schedule again, and here is the latest Super NES Works episode to prove it. I do need to re-render/re-upload it to correct the "next episode" date (sorry, but episode 14 won't be launching 3 days ago), but I did want to send this out despite the error so you can enjoy it before hunkering down for holiday time. That is, if you'll be celebrating holidays this weekend. I don't want to makes assumptions, here...

FINALLY: The latest video

Wow, this video project was almost the death of me — a really challenging video to write, research, and produce. Ironically, I decided to tackle it this week because I was dealing with time constraints and figured it would be an easy one to knock out. Oh, more fool me.

Anyone, this one's an anonymous patron request to delve into the world of region lockouts. I've appended it to NES Works because, well, the NES brought the filthy idea of region locking game hardware into this benighted world ...

A little something, uh, different this time around. To mark the arrival of a Game Boy "holy grail" collector's piece.

On another note, I'm still trying to wrap my head around the new Patreon fee structure you've probably received notice about, but I'm thinking there'll be some patron-exclusive video content on offer here to entice folks to stick around. Please stay tuned for more info.

Super NES Works #012: HAL's Hole in One Golf

Happy December, all. Whoa, December!? Where did 2017 go?

Here is the latest Super NES Works, for your personal edification.

You'll possibly be happy to know that I'll be getting back into the business of streaming this coming week, once I return from the travels I'm currently undertaking. I've been remiss with streams for a variety of reasons, but it's Final Fantasy and Mega Man's 30th anniversary this month, and those momentous occasions deserve celebration...

Game Boy Works #095: Mr. Chin's Gourmet Paradise

Game Boy Works is back with another one of those "what on earth is this?" entries. I have never seen or heard of this game outside of the context of this video series. Who thought this was a good idea? Romstar, I suppose, but… why? It's not the worst game on Game Boy, but it feels terribly unfinished, as if it were meant to sell through the sheer charisma of Mr. Chin (did you know he was a corporate mascot character!?). Yeah, I dunno. This is a weird one.

Super NES Works #011: U.N. Squadron

Hello, friends! Here's the latest Super NES Works. I was a little sad rendering this one, because games this enjoyable only come along every once in a while. After this, it's back to the slog…

Also, physical book recipients will be delighted to learn that completed copies of NES Works 1986 have arrived at Fangamer and should be shipped over to me for distribution soon. I've seen photos of the book. It looks amazing.

Books-a-lot

Hi everyone, I received word over the weekend that the NES Works 1986 books have shipped from the printer to Fangamer.

For those of you who are at the book tier: Fangamer should be sending over enough copies to me to mail along to you once they arrive. NES Works 1985 is going to take a little longer to come in since it entered production later, so I'll mail them separately.

For everyone in general: I'm hard at work on the year's third book… but it turns out it w...

Well, back to the proper sequence of subjects. I'll let the video speak for itself… mainly because I don't have anything to say. It's been a rough month and doesn't seem to be relenting yet. I'm kinda pooped.

I do intend to get back on the streaming kick this coming week, though, so please look forward to that. Daily Castlevania-themed mapping streams as a Halloween tie-in seems like a good goal...?

Also, book patrons: Both books are currently being printed and should be in-hand in Dec...

It's-a me, with another video about Mario

This week's video chronicles entry continues the episode I had to cut short at the 15-minute mark due to time constraints. There will definitely be a third part tracing the lines between Mario 64 and Mario Odyssey, but it won't be next week. Apparently someone leaked a pre-release game last month, and now Nintendo of America is only sending advanced copies of new games to big outlets. (Retronauts is not a big outlet.) But it'll be something to look forward to in November; in th...

Super Mario 64 (a partial retrospective)

This was going to be a two-part video retrospective, but I had so much going on this weekend I had to cut this first part off at the halfway point… so now it's a three-part retrospective. Or maybe four. I guess we'll see.

I don't intend to produce many N64 videos in the near future. That said, my video plans never quite work out the way I intend. So, once again, I guess we'll see.

Anyway… I feel like this episode came out seeming kind of, I don't know, professional? Weird.

I am nothing if not a man of my word

I've been talking about creating N64 retrospectives more or less since kicking off Game Boy Works (née World), and I've finally decided (three years later!?) to pull the trigger. In a limited capacity — this'll be something I visit from time to time, not a regular occurrence. But, you know, with Super Mario Odyssey right around the corner, the time seems right to revisit Super Mario 64.

Look for it soon. The script audio for Episode 1 Pt. 1 comes in at around 20 minutes, s...
