Gintendo tomorrow!

And hopefully every weekday after up until I head out for Game Developers Conference. Please look forward to it.

Gintendo ahoy!

Hi all, I'm heading back from Japan in a few hours.

I'm disappointed I didn't have the opportunity to do any streaming while I was here, but I focused more pulling together interviews and other writings for Retronauts first and foremost, and streams had to take a back seat. Anyway, I did manage to gather up several games for streams while I was out shopping — once I return home and settle back in, I'll be hosting Gintendo streams on a frequent basis. Here are the games I snagged:

Good Nintentions #021: Popeye

Boy, what a relief that this one isn't late! Please enjoy this timely release of the next Good Nintentions. Yes.

Whew, finally: Good Nintentions #020

Wow, this is late! I think this is the first time I've missed my self-imposed production schedule in more than a year. Let me tell you, this video project was a comedy of errors... but never mind that. The important thing is, it's done now. Please enjoy, and I will work hard to have the next episode finished in a more timely fashion...

Gintendo requests?

As I've mentioned, I'm heading out to Tokyo tomorrow. That does mean this week's video feature may run a couple of days late (depends on whether or not I have a power outlet under my seat on the plane, and how long it takes me to edit Retronauts Radio). But I will try to make up for it: I'm bringing along my Analogue Nt Mini for live streaming.

My hope is to pick up some interesting Famicom games in Tokyo and play a few of them on the air. So... any requests? Nothing for Disk System, please, a...

Good Nintentions script: Popeye

I'm hauling butt in order to wrap up some writing and recording before I leave town for a while, and here's the text for the second Video Chronicles production I'll be putting together on the road: Popeye. (Insert weird muttering laugh here.)

I have decided to take my Analogue Nt Mini and an Elgato on the road with me, so look forward to at least one Gintendo stream while I'm in Japan. I might have to break the rules and drink whisky for those, though. It's a lot easier to find over t...

Gintendo: It's Castlevania!

Hey, so I randomly, on a whim, decided to stream a playthrough of the original Castlevania this evening, with no warning or nothin'. It went surprisingly well, assuming you don't mind suffering through about 30 minutes of fruitlessly battling Dracula at the end.

I'll be out of the country from Feb. 5-13, so I don't know if I'll be able to host a Gintendo stream during that interval (though I may try streaming a walkthrough of a Tokyo retro gaming shop, assuming it doesn't destro...

Game Boy World #082: Battle Ping Pong

Surprise! I mentioned in today's Gintendo stream that my working hard drive completely died while I was working on the latest Game Boy World, and sadly nothing on that front has changed. Thankfully, though, there was nothing on that drive that I didn't have somewhere else, so with a couple hours of repair work I managed to get this together on schedule after all. Please enjoy.

Weekend Gintendo! (And Analogue Nt Mini)

Hi everyone, in case you missed the announcement on the Retronauts blog , I'll be streaming that bonus new year's Gintendo I promised this afternoon. The subject at hand will be Bionic Commando ’99, the fan-patched version of Bionic Commando that isn't afraid to call a Nazi a Nazi... truly an example for our troubled times. And I'll be sipping a G&T, which is also an unavoidable reaction to our troubled tim...

A new script for a new (lunar) year

Hello, everyone! It's the lunar new year today, and with a new year comes a new Game Boy World script. This one is for a game by Quest, the creators of Tactics Ogre, Ogre Battle, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Wow! Awesome, right?

Well... eh.

There are some promising Game Boy titles in the near future, though! Stay tuned. Beginning February 1, I'll be devoting my full time and attention to the Retronauts podcast and these videos.

P.S., I have a lot of family obligations today for...

So Gintendo happened

Now that it's funded (thank you for making that happen!) I'll be hosting weekly Gintendo streams. Or maybe more than weekly. I don't know. Basically whenever I can. Whenever my liver can afford the abuse.

I kicked things off yesterday, all formal-like, with a Zelda II stream. I was going to play it on one of the "those exist!?" grey carts, but upon further consideration realized it would probably be more interesting to play the Japanese version of the game to show off some of the diff...

Good Nintentions: Donkey Kong, Pt 1

Good morning. Maybe. Me, I feel terrible — I'm suffering under the nastiest cold I've had in years. Happily, my laying around on the couch all day yesterday allowed me to put this video together. I kept pecking away at it throughout the day and, eventually, it was done. Miraculous.

Anyway, please enjoy. Now I need to go empty out the unusually viscous contents of my lungs into a small tree's worth of tissue. Yum.

Surprise! It's... Game Boy World #081

Yeah, I know, I said I wasn't going to do another Game Boy World for a while. But then I spent all day and night yesterday with my computer tied up ripping LP records for a Retronauts episode, which meant couldn't do any audio recording or video editing work. Instead, I used the down time to write this script, and it all snowballed from there.

I would like to offer you a comprehensive look at the video game Patlabor: The Mobile Police, but unfortunately the language barrier and lack-o...

New script, and getting ahead of myself

Hey everyone, remember that time way back long ago (last week) when I said my goal going forward would be to have these video productions posted for you a week ahead of their public unveiling? Yeah. Really knocked it out of the park there.

I do hope to make that happen, but it won't be until next month. January has turned out, and not unexpectedly, to be pretty insane for me. I'm still working at USgamer through the end of the month, but at the same time I'm trying to lay the groundwork for ma...

Rough draft: Donkey Kong video script

Hello, everyone! I wanted to post one final script before the year ends. It's a very lengthy, and still very rough, essay on Donkey Kong.

As has been remarked, well, everywhere, 2016 has been a pretty lousy year. But, on the other hand, hundreds of people have enough faith in the work I'm doing here to contribute to my livelihood and make it possible for me to focus more on creating retrospective videos and archival works in the coming year, and that's incredible. So, a heartfelt word...

Good Nintentions #018: Mach Rider

Qapla'! Success is mine, for I have completed the next Good Nintentions within my self-imposed time frame: The Mach Rider episode is now here for your viewing. I'm really happy with the way this turned out — it includes a lot of research, some pretty solid (in my opinion) informed speculation, and quite a few little asides that you may or may not find amusing. Please, enjoy.

Mach Rider script

Hello, all. I've completed the first draft of my next Good Nintentions script. Exciting? Perhaps. More noteworthy is that I'm hoping to have the video complete tomorrow, assuming all goes well. With luck, I can get into a routine that allows me to post videos here a week before they go live on YouTube, as with Retronauts podcasts. I'm putting my holiday break to good use.

A merry Mode Seven Christmas with Pilotwings

Hello everyone, patrons both long-term and newly arrived! I'd like to kick off the holiday weekend with your next Retronauts Game Chronicles (née GameSpite) video: A look back at Nintendo's Pilotwings for Super NES. I've never been any good at this game, and my challenge here was to figure out why. Like any poor craftsman, I've chosen to blame my tools.

Now that my videos will be appearing under the Retronauts banner, I'm going to attempt to get on a one-week advance schedule t...

Big time

Well, chances are pretty good you've seen this post  at the Retronauts blog, but just in case you missed it: I'm rolling this Patreon campaign into Retronauts as the show's de facto video component and, with any luck, hope to make the act of discussing and chronicling video game history my full-time focus.

Basically, by contributing to this campaign, you're allowing me to pursue more and more frequent video pr...

Donkey Kong Jr. Math: The video edition

Well, it had to happen eventually — the worst and most overpriced game in Nintendo's Black Box pantheon. Like Stack-Up, it feels partially incomplete. And, like Stack-Up, no one bought it back in the day... so naturally it's incredibly expensive to own today. Good lord, though, is it so not worth the eBay price. It's not even worth the Virtual Console price. But hey, at least instead of just loudly lamenting this game's existence, I've offered a clear explanation of why it's ...

Into every chronological gaming retrospective series a little tragedy must fall. Here's a good example of this principle in action.

Power Missiøn: The instructioning

Well, my wild ambition to post a vintage manual PDF daily didn't quite pan out, because holy crap does this editing process take a while. I'll keep plugging away, though! For now, here's the manual for this week's video feature — a pretty difficult manual to come by, as it happens. Thanks again to Armen Ashekian for lending his packaged game to the cause!

Pilotwings: The video script

Well hello! I have written 2000 words about Pilotwings. I still need to record some footage and do more research on the technical limitations of Super NES hardware mode 7, but this is a fine first draft if I do say so myself.

Game Boy World #080: Power Missiøn

No, I don't know why the "o" in "mission" is written as ø in this game's title, but technically that means it should be pronounced "Power Missiun." That would be ridiculous, of course, so... I didn't.

Anyway, it's a new Game Boy World episode! For a game that probably deserves a more comprehensive look than I can provide, honestly. I feel like this would probably constitute a hidden gem, but I (1) don't have anyone to play it against and (2) have little faith in my ability to parse what makes...

Boy howdy

I wasn't kidding about December's cruelty. My long-awaited travel plans for the week were scuttled at the last minute due to a medical scare that sent me to the ER around midnight last night to see to my wife's health. She seems to be OK and recovering, but I definitely need to stay home this week in the event of another incident. (Ironically, after sitting with her at the ER until 5 a.m. last night, I've never been better positioned to handle trans-Pacific jet lag.)

On the plus side, I alread...

December is the cruelest month

Hey everyone, just a quick FYI – my posting schedule is going to be pretty much a mess this month as I'll be traveling for the next two weeks and won't be able to record any new game footage until the week after Xmas. I've recorded audio and footage for an episode that I'll be able to post this week, but beyond that... I'm flying without a net. On the plus side, some changes are currently afoot for the new year that hopefully will result in MAJOR upgrades in quality (and possibly frequency) fo...

Good Nintentions Gaiden #04: The Goonies

Hello, all, and welcome to December! I think this month is going to be a month of gaiden episodes — I'm going to be traveling for most of December and won't have time to invest in new capture and analysis of games. I promise I'll buckle down and get serious about Game Boy World (etc., but especially Game Boy World) in the new year, though.

This week, I've adapted and rewritten the Anatomy of The Goonies blog series into a video review. I actually had this finished and ready to go yesterday a...

This week's slightly belated video: Bio-Miracle Bokutte Upa

Good morning! Here is a video that I had hoped to have up last night, but I had to re-render it due to some minor errors. Anyway, it's here now, and hopefully you will find that it fills your world with delight. Thanks to David Morton for making this one possible! I enjoyed finally having an excuse to check out this game.
