Another Game Boy World already!? Yeah, I'm trying to get these onto a weekly schedule. We'll see how it goes. In the meantime, please enjoy this video about a sports game that I enjoyed despite being fairly baffled by it.

You've seen the rad video, now you can read the rad words that go along with it.
Game Boy World should be back on a weekly track now as my travels wind down, so stay tuned for another video soon! Final Fantasy Legend is coming up shortly, and I am super stoked to work on that one. I also bought a healthy number of Game Boy selections while I was in Japan to keep this crazy thing going as long as possible...

I guess that would have come in handy. I blame society.

You really have to be impressed by the Game Boy's ability to play host to some top-notch yet generally forgotten titles. But let us not forget this one; it's much too good for that.

Before I leave, I shall once again commemorate your greatest gift to the world: Bionic Commando.

I was in Akihabara briefly last night and spotted a copy of Top Secret: Hitler No Fukkatsu (the Japanese Bionic Commando) in a display case for a terrifying ¥9500 (about $88). A stupid, covetous part of me wanted to buy it... but that would be hopelessly frivolous, so I decided to write about the game instead. Please enjoy this placebo.

I'm going to spend my entire time here at Super Potato gazing with longing at a boxed copy of this game, which goes for way way too much money over here.

I'm off to Tokyo Game Show soon and will probably be too busy eating curr--I mean, covering the show to post much for a while. So please enjoy this lovely look at another stage of Bionic Commando. I intended to make this entry delve into two levels, but it turns out there was a lot more to cover here than I expected! Especially for an optional stage. This is game is great, y'all.

The more I write about Bionic Commando, the more I appreciate how advanced it was for its time. Seriously, this game was like, I dunno, the John the Baptist of NES titles. Except the beheading was replaced by an exploding head. Of Hitler.
Well, this analogy went south in a hurry.

This will be disseminated to the world in a day or two, but for now, you and only you get to witness the joys of... me talking about an 8-bit volleyball game. Mmm yeah.

Hey everyone, just as a heads-up, I'm going to be changing my Patreon from "per creation" to "per month" beginning Oct. 1. I seem to be all over the place in terms of content output from month to month, so this will make things more predictable and consistent for you. It'll also make the rewards easier to sort out for me. So please be aware that the structure will be changing next month, along with tiers and such. Thanks for taking part in this mad venture!

The article to accompany the Castlevania: The Adventure video is now live. It covers the same basic ground as the video, but with different words.

For some reason there's an oblique Sarah McLachlan reference in this article about Bionic Commando.
Also, I secretly did a practice run for Anatomy of Games videos yesterday under the guise of work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itGjqLG9g1I#t=05m00s

Greetings, friendly neighborhood backers. The long-awaited book edition of The Anatomy of Mega Man and Mega Man 2 is here... at least in PDF form, anyway. As a special thanks for your support, you get access to this well before anyone else. Due to my being out of the country for most of September, I unfortunately won't be able to ship printed books to those of you who are slated to receive those until next month, but you can browse through the digital version now on any device that supports PDFs...

I spent my idle airport time traveling home from PAX et al. on a couple of redeyes putting together the next Game Boy World video. The corresponding article will be along in a couple of days, but for now you can enjoy my video lamentations; Castlevania: The Adventure is startlingly not good. It should have been, but it's not.

Hey backers, I'm starting something new with this latest video — from now on, you get a day or two's lead on video creations over everyone else. Videos will initially be unlisted, so only people I send the link to — that's you — will be able to see them until I set them public a few days later. This is a small way of saying thank you for your support. Thank you!

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a quick progress report on The Anatomy of Mega Man book. The interior is done except for a copy edit pass (especially over the new material), but I wasn't able to finish the cover before I left for my week-long business trip. As you can see, I went old-school with ink and watercolors (inspired by the Japanese box art for the series), but I only managed to put down the background wash before I had to catch my plane. I don't have any means to scan a tabloid-size pai...

I'm about to head out of town for a week of not-very-exciting administrative stuff on the West Coast. But before I go, I wanted to celebrate surviving one of the most stressful weeks of my life by writing more about Bionic Commando. I'll be kind of sad when this series is done, because I'll be hard-pressed to come up with excuses to write about this game again...

I was planning to wait a while before launching this series, but there's been a LOT of ugliness in the news and online lately, and it's starting to become kind of suffocating. I kind of needed the embrace of something comforting and familiar as a palate-cleanser. Hope that's OK by you all....

Oh snap, I just realized I never linked to the feature article for Hyper Lode Runner here. Well, here it is. And there's a new front page design for Game Boy World as well — it's a little messier, but far more functional. Please let me know what you think! Hopefully it's more useful and more informative.
I think I finally have Game Boy World production down to a science, so expect weekly episodes from here on out.

The Anatomy of The Goonies II is done! I'm going to slow down creating stuff over the next couple of weeks due to travel and working on the Anatomy of Mega Man book for you guys — it's been taking longer than I intended because I had the ridiculous idea to produce a bunch of original artwork for it. So it's coming a bit later than intended, but I think it'll be a more interesting and entertaining production as a result. Anyway, once I'm back from Tokyo Game Show at the end of September, I'll b...

An interesting little racing game from Konami that I'd never played before but enjoyed. You can tell I'm new to it by how terrible my video play is...
By the way, some people don't seem to realize this, but the video script and article text are actually completely different for Game Boy World! You can read and watch for twice the exciting content.

It's been surprisingly great to have the excuse to play this game again. It's really quite an interesting piece of work. Flawed but ambitious.
In other news, expect a new Game Boy World video later this week. You will believe... a man can be very, very terrible at Motocross Maniacs.

The new capture gear for Game Boy World (and hopefully future systems to come) is set up and I threw together a quick comparison between its output quality and the footage I used for the Super Mario Land retrospective. Pretty stunning difference, even compressed on YouTube. I'm not sure if anyone but me REALLY cares about this, but I'm happy to have basically the best possible authentic (that is, recorded from actual hardware and cartridges) footage possible in these videos. Would you be interes...

Hey everyone! More Goonies II today. Game Boy World should get back underway soon; I've been waiting to record more footage until I came into possession of the Framemeister RGB converter unit a very generous reader donated to enable absolutely perfect video capture. It has arrived! And hopefully I'll be able to figure out how to get it working with my capture device sooner than later...
In the meantime, I've been having a great time rediscovering The Goonies II. This game gave me a lot of troub...
