Editorial?

Hi folks!

I might have a little bit of free time in the coming weeks, so I thought I would write some sort of editorial (more like a jumble of thoughts) on flight simulation or aviation subjects. I don't want to take too much time apart from the Mi-24 guide, so I'll give you a few choices for the month of August.

Feel free to add any suggestions for interesting topics.

Secret Documents #90: Mi-24 Guide - Weapons (Part 1)

Hi folks!

Here is an overview of the different available weapons. In this introductory draft, we clarify a few things about the Fixed and Floating reticles of the ASP-17 sight. One important piece of information to keep in mind when using the floating reticle in Automatic Ranging mode is "how" the range is computed.

Interestingly, the Mi-24 does not come with a laser range finder. Instead, the range is calculated by combining the radar altitude and pitch attitude... which gives an...

July 2021 - Month of the Mi-24

Hi folks!

July is upon us, and the sunny Marianas Islands with it. With COVID health & safety measures ramping down here in Canada, I'm starting to slowly rediscover what it feels like to go outside. The sun burns my vampiric skin, but it's a small price to pay to breathe some fresh air at last and go outside. I gradually rediscover how to interact with other human beings "in person"... Feels a bit weird, doesn't it?

Secret Documents #87: Mi-24 Guide - Cockpit & Equipment (Part 2)

Hi folks!

Let's continue with the description of the Co-Pilot/Gunner (CPG) station. This one was harder to make since the Eagle Dynamics reference material barely covers anything in it. Most of it was done by trial and error and by using Google Translate on the russian forums. There are still some very specific systems I'm not quite sure about (I'm looking at you, SSP Switch!), but I hope Eagle Dynamics can eventually bring us a an english manual that is more complete in order to fill i...

Secret Documents #86: Mi-24 Guide - Cockpit & Equipment (Part 1)

Hi folks!

The journey to learn the Mi-24 begins now!  This draft covers the cockpit of the Pilot-Commander. The cockpit can best be described as "methodical chaos". There is an ungodly amount of switches and levers, and while some components seem to have been placed in a fashion suited for a pilot-octopus... there is a certain logic in it that makes "flows" not to difficult to follow.

June 2021 - The Beginning of the Great Flight Sim Summer

Hi folks!

The month of June went by crazy fast! I barely had time to write some proper entries on the Patreon front, and I hope to fix that.

First, I want to thank you all for the warm reception of the Harrier guide update. It's something I didn't really plan nor want to do so early, but as it often happens... the timing was convenient, everything spiraled out of control and before you know it... the work was done. I may revisit it eventually to add a few missing ...

AV-8B Harrier II Guide Update (v2.7)

Hi folks!

There was recently a lot of controversy regarding my decision to temporarily put on hold the distribution of the Harrier guide. Well, now is the time where your patience pays off. This guide isn't a complete re-write, but a lot of work went into updating the sensors and weapons logic. Provided that RAZBAM doesn't re-design everything once more, I think this document should answer most of the commonly asked questions.

Secret Documents #84: AV-8B Harrier Guide Update - Sensors

Hi folks!

I had a bit of free time this week, so I decided to finish updating the Sensors section for the Harrier. I've gone in much more depth about the targeting pod and DMT (Dual Mode Tracker), so I hope it will be of some use for you all while you wait for the "proper" document update release. Keep in mind most of what is written here is based on trial and error (as simulated) and the very few information bits left by RAZBAM. Therefore, there could be stuff still missing...

MiG-21bis Fishbed Guide Update

Hi folks!

I've been wanting to re-do the MiG-21 guide for a long, long time. The MiG-21 was the first third-party aircraft I bought for DCS back in 2014 and I remember fondly the first time I experienced the awesome kick and roar of the afterburner... with the sense of sheer terror as you approach for a landing at breakneck speeds. It's a real trip back in the time of interceptors, smoky engines and terrible missiles. ...

Secret Documents #83: MiG-21 Guide Update - Navigation

Hi folks!

The Navigation section has been polished to better explain the differences between the ARC, RSBN and PRMG navigation aid systems. Instead of doing one single tutorial for everything, I decided to break down the whole navigation system suite into sub-systems to make it more understandable. Let's hope it helps!

Secret Documents #82: MiG-21 Guide Update - Countermeasures, Radio & Autopilot

Hi folks!

Countermeasures are rather simplistic in use, but I decided to further expand this section and talk a bit about the SPS-141 ECM Pod, which brings interesting features to the table. I also expanded the radio and autopilot sections significantly, which should now clarify some of the questions users have when first trying to use them.

Secret Documents #81: MiG-21 Guide Update - Air-to-Ground Weapons

Hi folks!

Let's wrap up the weapon section by covering air-to-ground weapons. These procedures are based on what is simulated by Leatherneck (now Magnitude), therefore keep in mind that there are some concessions made for gameplay purposes.

Secret Documents #80: MiG-21 Guide Update - Air-to-Air Weapons

Hi folks!

This time, we cover air-to-air weapons. The procedure is a bit longer but in my opinion better explained. The MiG-21 isn't a complicated aircraft to operate weapons with, but there are a few limitations that a pilot has to be aware of (effective missile ranges, ranging modes, etc.).

Secret Documents #79: MiG-21 Guide Update - Radar & IFF

Secret Documents #78: MiG-21 Guide Update - Takeoff & Landing

Hi folks!

Now, let's talk takeoff and landing. The MiG-21 is a plane that does not like to go slow, and it really shows. I've tried to include a few words of advice for new players that run into issues, especially during landing.

Secret Documents #77: MiG-21 Guide Update - Start-Up

Hi folks!

The start-up procedure has been expanded to cover a few steps I missed before. While it is longer than the previous one, I think it is much clearer to understand the MiG-21 systems as a whole. I know that the MiG-21's start-up procedure should be performed very "quickly", so I added special mentions on the non-required steps that are already "preset" by the ground crew to the correct position in a Cold & Dark cockpit.

May 2021 - Month of the Mighty MiG

Hi folks!

This month, I have decided to perform a complete overhaul of the MiG-21 guide. There is a lot of work to be done, but I feel this is very much worth it. The Fishbed was one of my first DCS guides and I feel it is time I give it some love. Magnitude has kept improving their module for 5 years... and with DCS 2.7 live, we're in for quite a ride.

I plan to improve... well... pretty...

F/A-18C Hornet Guide Update #4

Hi folks!

With the released DCS 2.7 version, the Hornet is becoming ever more complex. I originally wanted to wait for a few months before returning to it, but I felt like giving another push before the Great DCS Summer of 2021 comes upon us with new planes. The page count increased from 620 to 680+ pages... but I think it shouldn't increase much for the upcoming months, which will be quite busy for me.

Secret Documents #75: F/A-18C Hornet Guide Update - HARM

Hi folks!

The updates to the HARM missile now include Self-Protection Pullback, and Pre-Briefed modes. I included aircraft pullup and HARM pullup methods. Very useful for pre-planned SEAD missions in cases where you already know the position of the radar emitters.

Secret Documents #73: F/A-18C Hornet Guide Update - ATFLIR

Hi folks!

The AN/ASQ-228 ATFLIR targeting pod  is very similar to the LITENING II targeting pod in terms of capabilities, but there are a few differences when it comes to use it. I could have just decided to write on the differences alone, but I thought that it would likely be a safer bet to write a whole section on it in case its logic is updated in the future.

April 2021 - En avril, ne te découvre pas d'un fil

Hi folks!

The months of March and April turned out to be chock full of unexpected turns.  There is a french saying "En avril, ne te découvre pas d'un fil" that basically cautions against being overly optimistic. The english equivalent would be "Ne'er cast a clout til May be out". Postponed patches and rescheduled module releases basically threw a bunch of wrenches in my "grand" plans of earlier this year, so I've had to improvise in order to not waste too much time.

DH.98 Mosquito Guide Progress Report

Hi folks!

The draft for the Mosquito guide has progressed a lot since the last few weeks. While most sections are not fully completed yet (pretty much impossible without the module being released in DCS), I do have a decent amount of pages "pre-written". I'm starting to reach the limits of what I can do prior to the long-awaited release day. Overall, I think this will be an immensely interesting aircraft to fly.
