January 25th is upon us! The first day of Winter-een-mas!
I like to spend Winter-een-mas playing games, obviously, but I also like to use the week to appreciate some of the great stuff I've played recently. So for this week, each day I'm going to post a page dedicated to a different game I enjoyed in the past year. There are more than seven, but I'm going to pick the seven that stood out the most to me when I think of the past year.
Sound off in the comments with your favorite ex...
NYXI is coming out with a Switch controller featuring Hall Effect joysticks, which would theoretically make it impervious to drift. It also features rumble, something I've noticed a lot of third-party controllers ditch. The icing on the cake is that it looks like the OG Gamecube/Wavebird controllers. https://nyxigaming.com/products/nyxi-wizard-wirleless-joy-pad-for-switch-s...

Previews have started dropping with early impressions of Fire Emblem Engage, and I've been trying to parse the sort of game we're in for, but none of them can seem to agree where Engage falls on the FE spectrum.
I only got into Fire Emblem with Awakening, so admittedly I have a limited spread of experience with the series. I played a lot of Awakening, went back and dabbled a bit with Radiant Dawn, played some of Fates (lost interest, though I don't recall why), and then played...
It's always a little complicated when something you love is translated into a new medium. If it's pretty faithful, you feel like you're part of an exclusive club of people who knows things that people just discovering it don't, and if it's different, you're potentially judging the new medium against the old, usually with a bias towards the old. The new medium doesn't get a chance to stand on its own.
I'm not that bad about it, I don't talk through shows or movies or anything, but I've ...
I love that major console manufacturers are finally taking steps create accessible controller options and system-level support for button remapping and alternative control styles. More than once I've been talking to a friend of mine about new game coming out, and he casually reiterates that he has to wait and see what accessibility options the game even supports, so he knows if he can play it.
It's overdue, but I'm glad to see it happening. And also, I'm endlessly fascinated with the f...

I love turn-based tactics games, and I'm a big fan of XCOM. The past month, however, I've been playing Midnight Suns and… I think I may have a new favorite Firaxis tactics title.
XCOM will always have a place in my heart, but many of the changes in Midnight Suns have grown on me to the point where they'll be missed going back to the standard XCOM formula.
In XCOM, I always felt like I fell into a general pattern for most missions. Take a comfortable team comp, advance a little...
I was trying to write an opinion piece to go along with this strip, but honestly, after a full two days of researching this Hogwarts Legacy controversy/boycott from all of the different angles I could find, reading articles and reddit subs and comment sections... I am simply worn out.
And more importantly, I think, I've ultimately come to the conclusion that I can't offer anything of value to this particular discourse one way or another. Like it or not, Hogwarts Legacy, and the act of ...
This was supposed to go up last week, but I just realized the scheduler didn't do its thing.

This was supposed to be up last week, and I just realized the scheduler didn't do its thing. This is for December, still one coming for January.

It drives me nuts that I still haven't played The Witcher 3.
I mean... I've "played" it. I remember a bit in the beginning with Geralt and Vesimir, sitting around a camp talking about girl problems (which would probably make more sense to me now that I've seen the Netflix show). I remember a bath. I remember some training/tutorial stuff. I remember a tavern, and a fight with (I think) a hippogryph?
And that's about it. Maybe I went a little further up a road and a guy in a tower w...

Generally, I am completely fine with cosmetic microtransactions in support of a game's ongoing development. I'm happy to chip in to a live service game once I feel like the amount of hours I'm getting out of it has exceeded the value of my initial purchase price. That's an entirely subjective threshold that will be different for everyone, but as a general practice I'm free to opt in or opt out of, I find cosmetic MTX pretty benign (that's not to say it can't be sketchy/abused, but th...
