Initial Strider Blockout

This is definitely pushing the limits of my capabilities - which is good, that's how you learn. Notice the incredibly bad running animation which I'm gonna polish up later. I thought it was pretty funny.

This will probably take more time than the others, just due to the complexity of what has to happen. Whether or not it turns out well, I'll be a better animator on the other side.

Todays Work

Slow day, lots of IRL things to deal with. Still, I made some progress.

It's in need of a couple polish passes, some of the motions are wonky, but most of the hard stuff is done. All 13ish constraint hand-offs are looking reasonably smooth, and the most complicated motions have been blocked out. It's smooth sailing from here.

I'm considering recording some longer videos of me working on animations from start to finish, then uploading them here as timelapses or something. Let me kn...

Workbench Shot 3

Another screencap. These are a lot easier to record, so I can get you guys an update every other day or so this way - plus it gives a bit of a peak behind the curtain at all the buttons and gizmos that're used while making this stuff, which I thought some of you might find interesting.

This one is still very much a work-in-progress, especially near the end there. I haven't set up the camera movement yet, so forgive the janky viewport movement.

Workbench Shot 2

Something a little different, this shows my process for adding fake cloth physics to the cape. Real cloth simulation would look 10x better, but my computer can barely handle that kind of thing. This is much faster, and it gets the idea across well enough IMO.

Quick and dirty screen capture of today's work.

I really like how the tempo turned out on this one. It's over half finished, all that's really left is the 'return to idle' portion. Unfortunately there's no easy way for me to make the chainsaws spin, but I'll give that a second look once I'm done with the other clips.

Starting on the next video

Two down, more to go. Someday I need to learn how to make better VFX, but I think particle spam works for now. Decided to let myself use some guns, initially I didn't want to since it didn't really fit the theme of hand-to-hand combat, but now that we're up to the really big enemies, I think it's warranted.

As always, I'd love to hear suggestions from you guys if you have any.

Next Video Poll

The Helldivers 2 video will be another montage of melee takedowns, this time focusing on the larger automaton enemies (Devastators, Berserkers, Hulks, and Factory Striders). People seem to like these, and they're fun for me to put together.

The Little Nightmares 2 video will be a short fight scene between Mono and a bunch of puppets. It'll involve more cinematography. With the 3rd game being delayed, I'd like to fill out the wait time with some cool stuff.

90% Complete

These turned out a little more grounded than the Automaton ones, so I think I'll cap it off with the Bile Titan after all - just for fun. Once that's done, I'll start on the editing phase, which shouldn't take more than a few days.

Halfway done with the next video.

About 1/2 done with this next project, just got a few more clips to finish up to make it match the runtime of the first one. I was considering capping it off with something ridiculous like taking down a Bile Titan, but I've yet to decide if I'll go that route. We'll see how much motivation I have left after all the chaff enemies have 2-3 clips each.

Either way, this should be finished within one or two weeks.

New Finishers Project

These don't usually take too long, and are a great exercise to shake the rust off after being away for so long. I still have a lot to learn, I've been animating for ~4 years now and just learned about the importance of motion arcs, and how to actually display them. I'll be trying to incorporate that into my workflow going forward - which in layman's terms just means my animations should look smoother and more lively.
