Story 9 - Nothing Bad Ever Happens at the Alchemy Convention (Part 16)

My ears rang. It made it difficult to hear the crowd. A dull pain from my dislocated shoulder reminded me that I was still alive. When I opened my eyes, the world spun.

Fuck, I’d blacked out earlier, hadn’t I?

I hoped that the body cultivator who punched the puppet toward us would get his ass kicked.

Oh! There were formation flags all around me. Where the fuck was I? A sour feeling rose up in my throat. I turned over and coughed up seven mouthfuls of blood.

I blink...

Story 9 - Nothing Bad Ever Happens at the Alchemy Convention (Part 15)

To get ready to leave this place, I focused part of my mind on ensuring our safety. The first step to that was checking in with Ghosty.

::Have you recovered enough to use that defensive shield I taught you?::

::You know I’m still recovering.::

::I’m not asking you to use it at full strength. Obviously, you’re not well enough for that. But can you produce a shield that holds off an attack from another Nascent Soul?::

::Just say it.:: Someone must have taken the fish out of the storehouse to make room for whatever these two found.

::Barrels of Demonic Soul Devouring Vines that were about to come out of hibernation.::

Motherfuckers!

Those were vines that had gone extinct centuries before I attempted to ascend. For a good damn reason. They had a unique ability to jump on a target — usually an animal, cultivator, or spiritual beast — then they would coil themselves arou...

For the month of July...

You are all the best Patrons ever so, rather than decide to do things on my own, I'd like to get your opinion on what you'd like to read next month.

After reading everyone's excellent suggestions, I've mostly decided what I'd like to do for July but I'm considering a few options.

Firstly, I have about 2.5 parts worth of content left for story 9. I was considering pushing myself to get it out in 2 parts, but I would rather get it out in three. The last part would be around 1k-1.2k ...

“I don’t think Pill Saint Five Leaves Medicine will appreciate his long sought-after solution not getting a lecture in the main hall as it deserves. So, I’ll keep my original time slot.”

Ah, Violet pulled out her own Pill Saint. It was super effective. Lina froze for a whole second as if downloading information to her brain. “You mean the times you were supposed to get and not the mistake?”

Violet nodded.

Lina blinked. “As long as Pill Saint Five Leaves Medicin...

Blazing Lion smiled. “While Fellow Alchemist White Lily did make some excellent points, I don’t agree with her.”

White Lily crossed her arms under her chest and wore an expression that sent so much shade toward the unorthodox cultivator that she’d be living under it for weeks.

“She knows Alchemist Lin well, but does she realize how difficult it is for most alchemists to grasp logical alchemy? According to some of my seniors here, back before Immortal Zhenren ascended, no...

Ooooo, that bitch. Violet noticed that Little Spring wasn’t going to mess up, so she decided to force the issue. Knowing her, even though this looked bad she likely had an excuse prepared, one that would make herself look good.

At this point, whether the kid could save this batch, or had to waste it, this would show how effectively he could overcome errors. Considering how he often did everything perfectly within his first few tries, he hadn’t had many opportunities to practice fixi...

While Bright Flame took out his supplies, Violet was in the middle of realizing what I’d known for years... that she’d picked a frustratingly perfect student.

“You don’t have any problems? There has to be something you’re unsure of.”

Little Spring scratched the back of his head sheepishly. “I’ve already mastered all the pills I’ve learned at my level.”

“But that doesn’t mean you’ve made every pill a foundation establishment cultivator can make, righ...

I turned to Violet and smirked. “I’m just that good. Actually, considering your advanced age gave you a head start, isn’t tying a loss for you? You should have spoken less nonsense.”

Muahahaha! The look on her face was priceless. A vein popped on her forehead and she glared at me with such animosity that one of the Nascent Soul security guards had to take a step forward before she cooled her expression.

“You both tied,” Lina said, putting a stop to our argument.

I narrowed my eyes at the silly nerds. “The topic you all chose was — how to overcome a bottleneck in your alchemy...”

While a significant number were Foundation Establishment cultivators, most of them were at Golden Core. Several who had gathered to listen to Pill Otaku and White Lily discuss their current troubles were even at Nascent Soul... and they wanted us — practitioners weaker or equal to them — to talk about how to achieve breakthroughs.

Story 9 - Nothing Bad Ever Happens at the Alchemy Convention (Part 7)

The three of us had a pleasant discussion on the Dao of Alchemy. Since we were out in the open, our discussion attracted a crowd of curious alchemy nerds who, when they heard about the topics we were discussing, listened in with rapt attention. At first, it was just one or two. But they sent secret sound transmissions to their friends and more joined them. Eventually, the crowd became so large that security had us move to an open rest area near the main lecture hall.

We were in the midd...

As I turned, the first person I noticed was Violet, my old enemy. A white pill beast was wrapped around her shoulders like a scarf. Now and then, it would move slightly, and she’d stroke its head to calm it.

The bitch had a small group of cultivators surrounding her, the most prominent being a powerful Immortal Bone Creation man who casually walked with his hands behind his back like a happy grandfather. The white-haired old man wore ivory robes with delicate embroidered leaf patterns...

Farts were undeniably gross, if a part of nature. While the stinky wind wouldn’t spread fecal matter unless the gaseous individual wasn’t wearing pants, it would still spread hydrogen sulfide, the cause of the rotten egg stench.

While mortal food would be fine after being exposed to gas particles like that, immortal cuisine might not be — depending on how delicate the dish was. And in this case, we were talking about something a thousand times worse than a simple smelly toot. Obvi...

Once we’d gone through the line and collected our jade Con badges, Lina returned.

“We apologize for the inconvenience earlier. Our Guest of Honor, the Azure Pill Sage, had difficulties and accidentally held everyone up.”

Ah… I remember that stuck-up asshole. He invented some decent hand seals. Everyone had fawned all over him in my past life because of them until a group of researchers developed something better. Though they based a significant portion of their research on...

After our line hadn’t moved an inch for several minutes, the Golden Core alchemists started chatting with the sect members ahead of us. Even Peak Master Enduring Flame and little Grass Sprout started talking with some of the higher realmed attendees. While waiting in line was frustrating, these fellow alchemist nerds weren’t going to miss a chance to chat with their peers.

Arriving even later than we had was a group of six boisterous cultivators who strode toward us from a side path...

Her lips twitched. “You as well. You’ve grown since the Demonic Vine Mission.”

I straightened my back to show off my height. Compared to her, I was a few centimeters taller. “It’s only natural.”

She hesitated then asked, “Is Sword Master Salamander not coming with...

For This Friday/Saturday...

Hi Everyone! You are all the best patrons I could ever ask for! So, I'm letting you all decide what I should do next week. There are two choices. A second chapter for Story 9 or a second story for the April Fool's Day story (the one with mechs).

Please let me know which one you'd most want to see.

Thank you so much for supporting me! You are all amazing!

A pile of jade slips fell off Junior Sect Leader Unyielding Firestorm’s small writing desk, half burying him. He ran his hand through his perfect hair, causing it to become messed up. His desperate eyes locked onto me like he was grasping at any lifeline.

Story 8 Bonus - Little Spring and the Mysterious Egg

Author’s note:

Thank you for your patience. This story ended up being well over 5k words. I had planned for half that amount so I was much later than I thought I’d be.

This is the story I was originally going to write as an extra for you all. It was going to be 16.5, but I was sick and couldn’t find the energy or time to write it. Waiting to write it until after I’d finished story 8 has allowed me to go into it with a bit more knowledge.

Little Black had skin paler than white jade, painted red lips and large, wild eyes. She also looked older than I’d thought. Strangely, I had never seen her before. No, that wasn’t exactly true. I had noticed her hanging out around the Indomitable Peak’s treasure pavilion. Just another f...

Story 8 - Tribulation Troubles (Part 21.5 - Reactions and Battles)

Author’s Note:

The issue with first-person perspective is that it’s very weird to switch POVs. I rarely do it unless it’s a whole other story. But, it also means that epic battles feel less epic because you’re only focused on one perspective. In the Story 7 I got around this by having Lin use the split mind technique to keep track of almost everyone. I can’t do that for this story since there is already too much going on with Lin’s tribulation.

Story 8 - Tribulation Troubles (Part 22)

At this point, I had to use three times the amount of talismans just to protect myself from a single lightning strike. To decrease the rate its strength increased, I needed to switch things up. Keep it on its toes.

The spiraling clouds rumbled with thunder. The sixth bolt zipped toward me.

I used Impossible Leap to dodge, but I knew I wouldn’t be fast enough to completely bypass it, so I blocked it by angling the rubber heel of my boot just right. The force sent me flying almost...

Malevolence and bloodlust wafted off the spiraling cloud structure. Static in the air caused my arm hair to raise. My scalp numbed.

In this life, the heavens wanted me dead.

I pulled out five protective talismans and slapped them all over my body.

Step one of Lin’s plan to defeat her fears — throw money at it.

I had a limited number of these, but I’d estimated that there would be between ten and eighteen lightning strikes and purchased double the amount I require...

When I attached the last painted silk onto the flag stick for my Lin’s Awesome Defensive formation, it hit me that I’d finished my preparations for my tribulation.

I had my armor, my formation flags, spiritual tools, and my talismans. One was even at Golden Core, thanks to Shadow Gopher. I could also borrow the small pagoda from Salamander.

And aside from that, I’d mentally prepared myself for how I’d build my foundation.
