Crystal Catacombs - Destroyer

Many years ago, I was tasked with illustrating the enemies and bosses of the indie game, Crystal Catacombs. The game wasn't popular enough that anyone saw money out of it, but I did learn a lot about digital art. I could make this all look SO much better if I were doing it now!

The Destroyer is the enemy that shows up when you start to run out of time in a stage!

Browsable tags!

I just went through over 300 patron-only posts and tagged more than half of them, so you can now take a look at entire art series of mine much more easily!

In doing so, I also discovered how much stuff I still have yet to share from some of my old projects, so look for a whole lot of new patron-exclusive art posts coming!

Patron Doodle Request - Scaretoon Scaretoon TV Zombie!

A fun request to draw one of the undead televisions from an old Cartoon Network Halloween commercial!

Probably got some details wrong, but ah well!

You can easily find the original commercials on youtube, just search "scaretoon!"

Early Monsters - Ripoff Marmablue

The Secret of Mana was one of my favorite games for a solid couple of years straight when I was a kid, and I was OBSESSED with an enemy in it called a "marmablue," resembling a flying jellyfish. It was the combination of "flying jellyfish" and super cutesy, weird name that I guess I fell in love with, and I outright plagiarized them for the setting I had at the time.

Bit by bit, however, my version of the Marmablue became more and more menacing. I liked to think it was actually one of the...

Early Monsters - Name FORGOTTEN!!!

I don't know how I forgot this creature's name so completely. I remember filling entire doodle pages with them.

These gelatinous, stretchy little hat-like creatures were another silly, frantic, chaotic sort of being, but so much so that even the "jujus" couldn't stand them. Like gremlins, they loved to dismantle anything they could, squeezing into small spaces and using their prehensile, tapered heads as powerful tentacles.

Then, when danger struck, they'd just slingshot themselves...

Patron Sketch Request - Nepenthophilic Mosquito Arthropoid

Patron Sketch Request - Pixaresque Carnivorous Plant Characters

Hopefully it's evident what these all are to anyone who knows their carnivorous plants. The butterwort and bladderwort might be most obscure, I wager.

Patron Sketch Request - Knife-Throwing Boo Man

I wasn't sure what to do with this idea!

I think I like certain elements from different ones here, like the "skirt" of knives, or the knife head, or the broken knife hat, but I don't have a solid concept for this that feels quite perfect to me yet.

Text File Download - an early game guide to Mortasheen inhabitants

It must have been seven years ago (!!!!!) that Jacob Cales approached me to turn Mortasheen into an RPG.

Attached is one of the first documents I ever wrote up, including explanations and gaming ideas behind some of the races and monster classes.

Many details in this have changed completely or been dropped. You'll notice the "Zombie Spawn" were even just called the "Zombie" class at the time.

Early monsters - Mellows

More creatures from my pre-to-early teenage years.

Younger me totally stole stuff from video games all the time, and "Mellow" was originally the name of a Metroid enemy. Of course, it's also a real word, so who was gonna say anything!?

My "Mellows" were amphibious, rubbery, bouncing creatures made up of spheres. They were cute little burbling things with a hidden violent side, which was one of my favorite tropes before I feel it was really, really run into the ground.

A bunc...

Early monsters: Jujubee

Creatures I created in my pre-teens are flooding back to me lately, so I thought I'd share some of them.

I worked on a lot of worlds with my cousin, who was obsessed for a while with the term "Juju" and "jujubee." Neither of us even knew what they meant, they just sounded "funny" to us.

He envisioned creatures called Jujus who were a lot like the Jawas from Star Wars.

I envisioned them instead as like the Isz from The Maxx, but I gave them Jack Skellington faces and the same...

Mortasheen honeybee arthropoid concept

Latest version of a bee Mortasheen, which is almost 16 years overdue.

I want her to capture some of the fuzzy cuteness of bees, but in a more menacing and tough monster than I often do.

There's a Varroa mite arthropoid on her shoulder.

The alternate head is that of a drone male. They're lazier, smaller and spoiled like princes in the hives. They probably deserve to be, since they die after mating just once.

Patron color doodle - King Cuttlefish

This is a bit wonky because I didn't follow a sketch. Though I'd see how that might turn out.

It turned out wonky!

King Cuttlefish's crown is his starfish advisor.

He is the ruler of the ocean depths but he is about an inch and a half long

February Patron Sketch - Future Beef

This request had an entire story setup:

" Okay, how about this? It's more than half-way into this century, and humanity managed to survive while providing a decent standard of living to most people on the planet. Part of this is thanks to a booming industry of large-scale lab-grown food, which has replaced most of traditional farming. Take lab beef, for instance. Over many generations, the bovine cells were multiplied and perfected genetically so that each sample could be molded into a perfect...

February Patron Sketch - Weakling Yugioh Fairies

This request was for a Yugioh light-type fairy with 0 atk and defense.

Most of those in-game are just humanoid angels, but a few were mechanoids and a few were cartoonishly weird little creatures.

So these are a few different ideas for tiny, harmless angelic beings.

February Patron Sketch - Mammal Larvae

Challenging to come up with, because really, newborn marsupials are a lot like what a larval stage for a mammal would already resemble! They're similar to an earlier embryonic state in placental mammals, and larval insects, likewise, are just "embryos" that hatch ahead of time and develop a little differently!

text story by Rev Storm - Ascaris Meets a Bandit

You can find part one farther back in my posts. This was a series of short story chapters my spouse wrote last year about a large, heroic parasitic worm. It was never posted or used anywhere, and they aren't really satisfied with it, but there are around four entries and they don't mind me sharing them here.
